Strong Accents

Re: Strong Accents

Accents don't affect me. Its like choosing a friend based on their looks, which doesn't make sense as noone can change the way they speak.

Re: Strong Accents

Who told you that? People change the way they speak all the time. It's not the easiest thing to do, but it is possible.

Re: Strong Accents

Speaking of accents - am Watching Josh. Since when did sure become shoar. I thought only Bollywood pronounced it in that seemingly stylish way.

Re: Strong Accents

Yeah, accents can be changed with conscious effort or naturally without even trying..
In school we used to have elocution lessons to teach us to speak posh :D

Re: Strong Accents

Posh locality - phrase from distant past.

The accent change has to be at a sub conscious level. Else it is artificial. (Only desist who moved abroad can truly get what I mean - I think)

Re: Strong Accents

Speaking of Indian accents I find it really strange how Freida Pinto gets slated back in India for changing her accent..

She's an actress.. isn't that what she's meant to do to get more roles?? And even if she wasn't it obviously makes it easier for people around her to understand what she's saying..

We wouldn't purposely speak Urdu or Hindi with a strong English accent and misspronounce words just to show we're 'authentic', would we..

Re: Strong Accents

you really need to stop getting your "news" from gossip websites. no one even knows who preity zinto is in india.

Re: Strong Accents

People are probably jealous of Freida Pinto (not Preity Zinto! )

She is Goanese Christian and her natural accent probably differs from a North Indian Bollywood accent to begin with. I recall seeing her in a western movie I think. She was quite good.

As for artificial accent Bollywood English accent is as artificial as it gets babes. Anyways.

Re: Strong Accents

^I think it probably is jealousy.. Always lots of b*tchy comments about her looking 'like a maid' as well..

Re: Strong Accents

The hardest accent to get is black accent. If you are not black you just can't have it doest matter what.

Re: Strong Accents

that’s cz she’s darker than your typical bollywood actress/model. Accepted here in Hollywood but hated in India.

Re: Strong Accents

Once you're past a certain age it does not change on it's own. I have to be conscious of how I enunciate, all the time. And there are still times when you mess up despite knowing the correct pronunciation.

I think it isn't the same for everyone though. Some of us immigrants are more comfortable with the language because we went to English medium schools back home. Vocalizing our thoughts comes easy and our accent is the only flaw our speech has. We don't have to deal with learning a new language in our 20s.

Then there are those who didn't go to those fancy schools. Speaking without an accent is the least of their worries. They have to learn a whole new language, which is a far greater challenge than just changing your accent.

And some people just don't get to practice that much or are too scared to be labelled as wannabes.

Re: Strong Accents

And what’s she saying. I heard “Android” “iPhone” “Get gone”, but have no idea what she’s trying to say.

Re: Strong Accents

Strength is good.

Re: Strong Accents

live with it. i know so many indians, professional and all, but yet they speak with a thick accent. very very confidently. and their english vocab etc is better than the locals. :)

Re: Strong Accents

At least you got iphone. I kept hearing air phone. I thought something to do with airplane mode.

I would wager your house she said get down.
