Indian police used teargas and batons yesterday to disperse Shi’ites as they marched to mark the death of the Prophet’s Mohammed’s (PBUH) grandson in Kashmir’s main city, police and witnesses said. More than 20 people were wounded, they said. “God is Greatest, there is no God but Allah,” the mourners, led by activists of a separatist group, shouted in Srinagar, most beating their chests with fists. Shi’ites across the world mourn the 7th-century slaying of Imam Hussein and his followers in the Iraqi city of Kerbala, during the first Muslim month of Muharram, which began on January 21. “Over 100 people (Shi’ites) have been also detained,” said a police official, who did not want to be identified. Religious processions, including those in Muharram, led by separatists have been banned in Jammu and Kashmir state since a bloody rebellion against Indian rule broke out in 1989. After the procession, Shi’tes clashed with police in several parts of Srinagar, witnesses said. The procession was headed by members of Ittihad-ul-Muslimeen Jammu Kashmir, part of the region’s main separatist alliance, the All Parties Hurriyat (Freedom) Conference. “We strongly condemn the use of force on a religious procession. Despite police violence the Muharram processions will continue,” said Moulana Abbas Ansari, a leading Shi’ite priest and chief of Ittihad-ul-Muslimeen. Tens of thousands of people have been killed in violence, involving separatist militants and Indian soldiers and police since fighting began in Kashmir. Bloody rebellion broke out in 1989.

If you want to go ask that question to ppl of kashmir who have to go thru all this violence every single day, they wud say neither..they just want a peaceful life, which they had till the late 80’s. I know people say there was always some unrest in the Kashmir valley but Pakistan did do its part in helping terrorism in the valley and Punjab in the late 80’s. It’s neither a freedom struggle nor an Islamic one..its a terrorist activity. They care neither for the civilians nor for Islamic values. all they care about is land and power :halo:

The Indians have been very clever in hiding their attrocities, particularly from their own people.. Just becuase there arent any Refugee camos, although Kashmiris did shift over the Azad Kashmir, that doesnt mean nothing has been going on there.

The Kashmiris want independance, its a freedom struggle… I think its been made abundantly clear, that those in Kashmir no longer want to live under the Indian yolk.

who are the people left in Kashmir now? all the people who can afford it, send their kids to study elsewhere and dont want them to come back and FEAR is definitely a motivator to stay indoors and not raise a voice..now u can say its the fear of indian armed forces, I wud say its those terrorists...but the people whoa re losing out are the kashmiris, not u and me..a whole generation lived under the terrorist era..but now I think the situation IS changing..trust me, you can see flocks of kashmiri kids in HP, Delhi and other places...coz they have realised they have no future in Kashmir, until this situation gets resolved..its kashmir that is losing out in this battle.

I think we are talking about the VAST majority dont want to live as Indians… The vast majority of Kashmiris, be they in Srinagar, Muzafrabad, UK, or even India, want independance. Whether they are staying indoors out of fear of militants or the military is irrelevant when in the end they simply dont want to be Indian.

how much wud u care what nationality u r if u cant make a living and afford two meals a day...they wud side with anyone who wud say i can give u that..and there's a hindi muhavara..dunno if u have heard it or not..but it goes like "door ke dhol suhavane". some ppl might say they dont want to be indians but sinceu are talking abt the "vast majority", trust they dont give a damn which flag rises in their city on the independence day...not anymore.

Scores of Indian soldiers have been committing suicide in occupied Kashmir in recent years. Obviously they cannot live with the guilt of the horrendous crimes they have committed there.

Maybe, but fact remains, that India hasnt given them jack squat and thus they want independance… People have wanted to cede for much less…
Regardless of what you think, its abundantly clear that the Majority of Kashmiris really dont want to be Indian.

There have been many independant groups who have confirmed crimes against the Kashmiri people. Doesnt take a pulitzer to see whats obvious.
