For the example I gave, a guy providing the pedicure treatment, the same thing happened to me when I was in India.
I asked for a woman to provide the services and she was booked, so they offered the services of a guy. I know it is not a Muslim country, but given the general conservative culture which still exists in the less urban cities of India (Bollywood lies), I was surprised at their shock when I declined to get my toenails done by a guy. I thought it would be sufficient for me to say that I'd be comfortable with the services of a woman but they kept insisting that he was really good at his job. They didn't seem to register that an individual, regardless of the religion or conservative/non-conservative nature may not want a guy for these services, if given a choice.
Many of my non-Muslim friends refuse to go to a male masseuse or esthetician or even a co-ed gym - it has more to do with who you're comfortable sharing your personal space with and at times a woman's body image.
Inida is STRANGE country when it comes to guys and girls mingling only because they are next door and we are their blood we don't find them weird.
