But it was wrong of that person to put you in an awkward position no? Why thank them and even faintly acknowledge that emotion.

For example, if I had a crush on some married person who was happily married, what would be the purpose of revealing my feelings? To cause chaos, some bad feelings, maybe give him options?

It’s true no one would revel their feelings no matter how much they like the other married person. UNLESS of course he/she finds out that your marriage is not working out and just throwing in an option for you!
