I read that there was a tailor master duing British era, who went on Burma front and earned lot of money by sewing uniforms of the troops. When he came back home ( a village near Gujranwala), he built a pakka house having toilet inside.
This created anger amongst the local, who were not comfortable with the idea of having a place like toilet in a house, connected to their houses. So they agitated and requied the tailor to demolish that toilet or leave the village.
Finally, the tailor had to agree with them and he demolished the toilet and next morning, he went to jungle.
A remarkable victory by Desis on Gora culture
The question is: How a community that was against idea of toilet inside house, adapted to live in rooms having attached baths?
lol...this reminds me a case in India that recently found it's way into the media.
this woman refused to marry her fiance until he made an indoor latrine for her...he didn't have the money so he approached a local politician who for his own benefits asked the local government to provide it for the family. government listened and not just this couple got a latrine in their house but 1500 other families also were extended the same benefit of providing latrines in their homes...
happy ending...the couple got married and they have been living happily thereafter and i hope not in the laterine! lol :D
In my village in Patiala, government ordered latrines for every house, under that scheme, every mazhabi/chammar sikh had a latrine outside their hut, they used those latrines for food storage and continue to do their toilet work in fields:D
There was a Pakistani movie made by Jawed Shaikh (the guy who played ShahRukh’s father in OM Shanti OM) with the name ‘Khulle Aasmaan ke neeche’ starring Meera

I don’t know even Vastushastis have ever decided any location for toilet:hmmm:
Yes Mazahbi sikhs are chammar, the title mazhabi was given to them as they can be religious people and can enter gurudwara unlike Hinduism, Punjab has highest Dalit population in terms of percentage,
26%.
they are seen lined up along the tracks everywhere across length N breadth of India…funny thing is: they are so carefree that they sit facing the train OMG!
yes, in my house in the village, the toilet was housed in an entirely separate quarter which was bigger than most house in the village and houses of zamindars were big, really big! lol

Yours were civilized zamindar of Ganga Jamuna tehzeeb, mine were Jat zamindar of lyallpur, badtameez by definition:D, I doubt they ever would have thought of toilet, majority of Indians even now haven't upgraded to paper from water. Toilets were so out that during pressure time every metre appears a kilometre:D

Generally here we consider chamaar as an insulting term equal to Jahil / Ganwar, whereas Mazhabi (religious) is a positive term. People look for mazhabi gharane ki ladki for marriage.
jalandhar is in doaaba region, they speak dialect called Doaabi, Politically Punjab is dominated by Jats and educationally and beaurocatically by Brahmins and Khatris, Beant Singh, the one who killed Indira was Mazhabi while all terrorist who were killed in golden temples were Jats.
Agra to kannauj is also called doab region, it is between Gangaji and yamunaji:)
garmi mein jyada poori kachauri khaane se yehi hota hai:D, In UP, summer is baarat season, that is why travelling in summer by train in UP is always more difficult

Chrm-ah, means leather in sanskrit, and those who work on leather were called Chammar, In hinduism, leather is prohibited one cannot go into either temple or gurudwara with leather as it is as good as carrying flesh. It started denoting low caste and uncivilized people though Sikhi doesn't recogonize caste and against caste discrimination, Sikhs are as much casteist as Hindus and Muslims in India.

Interesting. I know about ChamRa, but never thought about the link about ChamRa and Chammar. :)
One of our friend from Punajb was lamboo. His name was Nisar and our friends from Punjab use to tease him by singing:
Sir bada sardar ka, paon bada chamaar ka, qad bada nisar ka :)
I think laterine moved inside the house because of the lack of the outside space. Same thing here in USA. Olden says, they used to have outhouses. Now its all attached.
