Storm Sandy!!

So who here on GS living in the USA and Canada are on high-alert for storm Sandy?

For others who do not know, it is a storm of mammoth proportions heading towards USA & Canada…it coming from the Bahamas…

My mom lives in Toronto, and she said they have been issued warnings to stock up on food, water, and there could be no electricity for 72hrs…and it is raining already over there…

I read on the net that evacuations are being done for New York, and flights have been cancelled…

Yea, i don’t know if I should make a big deal of it or not, but it’s been raining since this morning, here. And now, winds have picked up.
They’re expecting winds to be up towards 75 mph in my area.

:hinna:

Oh well, an excuse to stock up on snacks! :yahoo:

MM get yo *** outta the NY area!

Re: Storm Sandy!!

^hahahah...yup...my mom is not taking it too serious...but who knows...we all know what these crazy hurricanes can do..it has already done damage to the Bahamas...

Re: Storm Sandy!!

'Sandy' has been hyped quite a bit...it won't be a hurricane as soon as it hits the land mass...it will be downgraded to a tropical storm. there would just be a lot of rain and a bit windy, that's ALL! the weathermen always scare the hell out of you but at the end most of the time it fizzles out. i'm NOT overly worried or taking extra precautions. yes, i am in it's path...i've heard ALL that before...winter storm is much more scary and more to worry about....iA, ALL will be OK.

Re: Storm Sandy!!

^KKF, are you in Ontario? I remember the winter storm that hit ON last year....all those trucks and cars stuck on the highways, and how the helicopters had to come and airlift ppl out...

Storm Sandy!!

Stay safe people!

Re: Storm Sandy!!

yes i am...this is my experience with environment canada that when they talk about the 'storm of the century' it always never ever materializes...it fizzles and when the huge storms hit us, they are asleep on the job...lol! my bro has been in Canada for decades and he says the same thing. i've seen that in my 12 years of stay in Canada. Newfoundland weather forecaster were much better lol

Re: Storm Sandy!!

Here is an update for USA :

"Hurricane Sandy strengthened in the early morning hours Monday, with winds reaching 140 km/h. President Barack Obama declared emergencies in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, authorizing federal relief work to begin well ahead of time. He promised the government would "respond big and respond fast’’ after the storm hits. The New York City region could face the worst of Hurricane Sandy.

Authorities warned that New York could get hit with a surge of seawater that could swamp parts of lower Manhattan, flood subway tunnels and cripple the network of electrical and communications lines that are vital to the nation’s financial centre.

Major U.S. financial markets, including the New York Stock Exchange, Nasdaq and CME Group in Chicago, planned a rare shutdown Monday. The United Nations, buses, and subway services also shut down.

Airlines cancelled nearly 7500 flights and Amtrak began suspending train service across the Northeast."

Re: Storm Sandy!!

yep, I am in toronto as well heard the same as your mother.. did not stock up on anything, not sure if i should :hmmm: since it’s so cold out and i do not want to go anywhere!

Re: Storm Sandy!!

i dont know why they called it sandy when its actually rainy and windy.

Re: Storm Sandy!!

It's getting really windy in NJ!!!

Re: Storm Sandy!!

We are in its path and as much as I feel it has been hyped,I have still taken all the precautions I could.I do not live along the shoreline, where they have ordered evacuations...the main issue is the aftermath of the hurricane.Too much strong winds cause lots of power outages...and that leads to no power,no heat,no hot water,no cable...and these conditions when existing for days can be very troublesome. We experienced two weather related outages just last year..one lasted for 2 days and the other 5 days...it was hard..!

So far we have strong winds and drizzling rain since morning and still have the power.Let's hope it remains that way..!

Re: Storm Sandy!!

Exactly, i didnt know 75-90 miles an hour winds are hurricanes now. Too much overreaction, most prolly due to upcoming elections.

Re: Storm Sandy!!

Stay safe, you guys.

Re: Storm Sandy!!

We'r in the usa and pretty much same as what your mom said.

Re: Storm Sandy!!

It's getting windy here too.

Re: Storm Sandy!!

Well better to be prepared.

But may you all be safe.

So coming to hurricanes as this is the S & T forum, what the heck gives birth to one?

Re: Storm Sandy!!

the wind has picked up a little...rain is more consistent and a bit heavier as well.

Re: Storm Sandy!!

^ Change of temp, I guess. In simple terms, warmer air of a region moves upward and cold air from surrounding regions rushes in to fill the void.
