Storm Sandy!!

Re: Storm Sandy!!

well…stop being lazy and stock up on some food…you never knowwww!!! :cb:

yeaa..same questions my husband asked! I dnt know where they come with all these names…!

@Niksik - I’ll try to find the answer for you..

US financial markets are to stay closed for tuesday as well!!!

Everyone else please stay safe!!

Re: Storm Sandy!!

I honestly hope this is sarcasm…
75-90 mph winds aren’t slow or tolerable by any means. If 35 to 45 mph winds can knock down trees, i can’t even begin to think of the damage 90 mph winds would cause!!
And the weather forecast doesn’t have ANYTHING to do with the election

“…Tropical storms that reach a sustained wind speed of 39 miles per hour are given a name, such as ‘Tropical Storm Fran’. If the storm reaches a sustained wind speed of 74 miles per hour [or more] it is called a hurricane - such as ‘Hurricane Fran’.” - Source.

Meteorologist forecast the weather, not predict the future. :smack:

The names are chosen A-W. They change the “gender” of the name every other storm.
For example:Alberto, Brenda, Chris, Debby, Evan, Francis… and so on. All the way to W. (I guess because X, Y and Z don’t have common names :hehe: )

Re: Storm Sandy!!

No sarcasm all real.

I have seen 5 major hurricanes atleast, and countless category 1 hurricanes and never evacuated. trust me, i know what i am talking about.

Re: Storm Sandy!!

Also Hurricane Katrina :hehe:

I think that they alternate between boys and girls names–like if the a hurricane has A girls name then the B hurricane will have a boys name.

Re: Storm Sandy!!

^^ Yes, the names are alternate male and female.

Also, if a hurricane becomes a major hurricane then they retire the name.

like katrina, rita, ike , gustav etc will never come again.

hamaare yahaN to 'khoda pahaaR nikli choohiya' ... itnaa shor thaa magar saaraa toofaan Canada aate aate 'TaayeN TaayeN Fish' ho gayaa...this is what i said the storm was hyped IN CANADA!

Re: Storm Sandy!!

It wasn't gonna be a big deal in Canada anyway, we knew this! It was gonna lose strength by the time it reached canada.
NJ has been hit quite bad. Shukar hai ke we don't live in the badly hit areas. We still don't have power or cell phone reception in our area. It looks like a ghost town .. there are fallen trees and power lines everywhere!!!! And I thought we had it bad ...people closer to the shore have lost their homes :( I feel so bad for them.
We're in Philly now where some areas still have power ... just waiting for my neighbors to call and tell us our powers back ... I wanna go home :(

Re: Storm Sandy!!

^awww Wendy, glad to hear you are safe :hugz:

Hopefully things will clear u soon.

Re: Storm Sandy!!

i KNEW it too and i mentioned that in one of my posts but Environment Canada SCARED us a LOT! :)

Re: Storm Sandy!!

I'm glad you guys werent hit. It's been devastating for those who've been hit ...
Because of hurricane Irene we honestly didn't think this was gonna be a big deal. Sandy's nothing like Irene ... it's WAYYY worse!!! :(

Re: Storm Sandy!!

I knew it was not hyped for the US, coz it is not the first time something like this would happen there, also they did close the NY stock exchange for TWO days...that means it was going to be BIG!

Re: Storm Sandy!!

Empty TS is sad. :frowning:

Glad everyone is safe but power loss must be hard to deal with.

Ontario wasn’t hit very much at all. I heard some people lost power in Toronto but it was restored fairly quickly. Don’t think there was any major damage or flooding either. I am a little bit away from Toronto and it was just like any other windy/rainy day. We weren’t expecting much more either.

Re: Storm Sandy!!

The climate change skeptics have some 'splainin to do.

Aaliya - you will be happy to note exchanges are open again.all aboard.

Re: Storm Sandy!!

One more thread one more victim.

Re: Storm Sandy!!

Irene hit us bad last year in CT,MA, VT.. we were without power for weeks, bridges were gone, people lost their homes, trees were down and not enough crew was available to restore power. They were much more prepared in these states this year but Alhamdulillah it didnt hit us that bad... last year, NY and NJ escaped due to the route change and so did we this year.. these things are sooo unpredictable! Everyone should always be prepared nonetheless.. if there is a warning, it shall be taken seriously.. whats to lose? we have extra water and food, copies of our documents with some of our family friends and a family plan in case we are all at different places and cant reach home.. doesnt hurt to be prepared!

Re: Storm Sandy!!

Finally, we have SUN out there with it's FULL glory and today will be, iA, the first FULL day of sunshine in over a week. i like cloudy days but today i'm enjoying the sun because i had enuf of dreary weather, i suppose! :)

Re: Storm Sandy!!

The sun was out but there were moments of flurry today. :( As I was driving to work a little while ago - at times there was no precipitation and just sun and then out of no where there was flurry.

Re: Storm Sandy!!

Well...Winnipeg is gloomy as ever :/

I want some snow :p
