Are you serious? Just from economical stand point, free enterprise system ceases to work if you start giving things out for free. If free was the answer than Linux would have a much bigger foot print in OS market than Windows. In PC market, linux has less than 3 % share while more than 85% users have Windows.
Coming back to apple, the innovations did not just help people but helped business all around the world. App designers, accessories makers, retailers - you name it and Apple products influenced so many tech sectors in such a positive way.
Your post lost loads of credibility when you mentioned that weird flop movie Tron.
Anyways, I will try to address your post and add to TLK’s post above. Google is a fantastic company and an innovator. But if you think Apple has NOT advanced the technology then you need to revisit 2001. There were many mp3 players around but iPod basically told people how to make mp3 players.
Then revisit 2007 when iPhone was launched and just look at how other companies (including Google) decided to jump in touch phones phenomenon with various imitations of iphone. So that was another major advancement.
These are maybe small achievements for you but these advancements became part of our daily lives. Just like Google has
Oh come on Mirch uncle you know I didn’t meant that. Its not because its costs more (which it does) its whats attached to the brand name. I am not comparing manji vs sleeping on the floor. I am comparing a manji made by apple and a manji made by HP. I am also not denying that indeed apples makes good/better products BUT I believe (and it doesn’t have to be true/fact) a big portion of people buy apple products for the brand name. This is something I have seen among university students and they have zero knowledge about computer/technology.
PS. when I said I agree with hammy007 I didn’t say I agree with his view on giving out free softwares. It just jogged my memory of what I have seen among university students and the craze for having a macbook.
The products were no doubt very innovative…but the marketing was even more superb…with the brand image and all…i am sure the hardware/software costs and incremental benefits of apple products isnt that much higher than the competitors…but the prices are definitly higher…which makes apple such a success..
You’re not wrong at all… as an IS researcher, I know that “perceived image” plays a significant in technology adoption. So Apple’s marketing has indeed played an important role in where the company is today. Of course, the “perceived image” by itself aint worth much if the products were sub-par, which they are not.
