IMO, Steve Jobs’ iconic status is indisputable - he brought Apple from an impoverished state in 2001 to where it is today (operating cash balance > US Govt). While the company will continue to do well in the near term, it’s long terms prospects aren’t as clear because I don’t know whether Cook will bring the same spark to the table that Jobs did. I think Cook is more of a “minder” type guy, while Steve was the “finder” type guy. Cook is a supply-chain guy while Steve was known for his charismatic marketing prowess.
Perhaps, Apple will end up being like MS without Gates… a well-to-do company but not the disruptive entity in the industry that it once was. That being said, I do think that Jobs has done a better job with inculcating a culture of innovation and a consistent product philosophy in his company than Gates was able to do… so this might work in favor of Apple.

Cook is a logistics guy who improved the bottom line of Apple by creating the most efficient supply chain for Apple and contributed to company’s success but innovation is Apple’s ball game and Steve Jobs was the force behind it.
On the other hand SJ did not think of those innovations himself other than Mac , there is a team behind all those innovations , so they might keep on doing what the do the best, i.e innovate and keep the company on the same track.

Mirch: I agree with your post and like I said earlier that there is a team behind every successful idea.
But one has to acknowledge that it takes a real ‘visionary’ like Jobs to encourage such innovations? Why couldnt Nokia evolve? why was MS accused of stubbornness? It is because some of their teams did not have the required vision or innovation like Jobs did.

Yep even if team comes up the best idea but the leader has to gauge the potential and should have the vision to make it a reality. Many innovative product which can make history do not see the light of the day because of this lack of vision.

Jobs made the whole tech world follow him. He did not give the consumers what they needed, he made them want what he had. That is what I call marketing genius.

TLK: Well said! This is the exact reason people are skeptical of Apple’s long term ambitions and future. But hopefully his vision would have trickled down to Cook and other members of the board.

Steve Jobs has resigned as CEO of Apple. This, of course, means that the company has had its spirit broken, its intellect blunted, its worth gutted. Except it doesn’t, quite. The Steve didn’t nurture this company from near-collapse to global powerhouse with snap decisions and daily briefings. No, he and his immensely capable team did it with design, forethought, and consistently staying a step or two ahead of the other guy. That’s not something that changes overnight.He may be leaving the office, but he’s not leaving the company. Apple still belongs to Jobs — and we’ll know it when that’s no longer the case. And while he may be turning over the operational reins to his protégé, I have the feeling he’ll be making it clear who the Don is.

great riddance, i dunno why people are turning to buying things with apple, while compnies while are really advancing the technology like google are distributing softwares for free
according to tron movie, its best to give softwares for free, this is real innovation

You know, I kind of agree. I feel having an apple product is a status statement for a lot of people (like having a birkin bag is a statement for wealthy women :p). I’m sure a fair bit of people get the product for its functionality but a bigger portion get it for the fact its apple.

Apple makes great hardware and then great software to run it , you cannot expect any company to give their hardware for free if they have to pay to their vendors to create those products unless all those vendors also go in charity business and supply all the raw material and parts to Apple.
Still the worker who work in those factories will no work for free , will you like to be working for free for anybody ?

This argument can be given for any product in the world , some people will say those who sleep on manji , do it because they have money to waste , why would you sleep on a manji if you can sleep on the floor ?
