Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin has been killed in a stingray attack near Cairns on Australia’s far north coast.
It was believed Irwin had been swimming off the coast of Cairns when he was stung.
“It is understood he was killed by a stingray barb that went through his chest,” Brisbane’s Courier Mail reported this afternoon.
Irwin was best known for his documentary series “The Crocodile Hunter”.
He was born in Victoria and found his love of animals after following in his father’s footsteps, volunteering his services to the Queensland Government’s East Coast Crocodile Management program.
He spent years living on his own in the mosquito infested creeks, rivers and mangroves of North Queensland, catching huge crocodiles single-handed.
In June 1992, he married American Terri Raines after they met when she visited Irwin’s Australia Zoo. The 44-year-old is survived by his wife and two children, Bindi and Robert.
noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
as annoying as he is i didnt want him to die :( Even though i knew one of these days he would :( why do people do things like that :(
You'd think someone is invincible and everytime he gets into a sticky situation you expect him to break free of the aligators jaws, or dodge that snake snapping at him. This guy was amazing for bringing excitement to animal. I am gonna miss him. :(
I'm stunned. Apparently he's only the third person ever to be killed by a stingray. Someone on Sky news just commented that he'll be looking down on us saying 'told you a croc wouldn't get me' hehe. he so would.
its a very big news here in ozzie at the moment...everyone here is shocked....It is shocking that the man who tackled so many dangerous creatures got killed by a stingray. Stringray although a placid creature has a very deadly barb. Apparently Stevo was pronounced dead on spot. :( :(
I was so shocked when i heard abt this. He was a crazy guy who was a proper daredevil. I liked watching his programme. I remember when he had his son he shocked every1 by putting his son's head in a crocs mouth. But still though its very sad. :(
Very tragic :( I loved this guy, I watched his documentaries with excitement and enthusiasm almost every day and his passion and love for animals brought you closer to them than you could ever be, right in the comfort of your living room.
Ultimately he died doing what he loved most. And who would have thought by a Stingray, and not by a Croc or snake?
A true legend who can never be replaced and he will be sorely missed across the world.
poor guy... he was my favorite on discovery channel as well. down in the carribean they have excursions for swimming with the sting rays and they are such placid and friendly creatures. especially the big ones like to hover around and like being touched. i guess you never know when you are going to tick one off.
