RIP. While it is tragic and a terrible waste, I think it shows us that we need to respect wildlife and not be so arrogant as to think that we are in control. I have always thought that Irwin was unnecessarily aggressive with animals, poking and prodding them for no other reason than to get a rise out of them for his show.
Sting rays are normally very docile but will defend themselves when cornered. I, myself, have been on dozens of dives with sting rays and have found them to be very curious, inquisitive creatures. I don't think we are being given the whole story here, I can't believe that a sting ray would strike without reason.
Anyway, with that said, i think Irwin did a lot for animal awareness and my heart goes out to his wife and kids.

Lesson In Steve Irwin's Death: Respect Nature!
Irwin is a victim of the glorified recklessness that has hijacked mass-media and tv today. I feel sorry for the man. But he didn't respect nature and nature demands respect.

Yeah this was such a HUGE shock when i found out in the morning! 
I loved the guy, he was an amazing personality. Extremely inspiring and each moment was fun when he was on screen. I had a dream to meet him and visit his zoo…we grew up watching him and learning from him…
His wife is in the same field and so his the little daughter Bindi, she’s so cute and was so fun to watch as she helped around her dad at the zoo, she is so like him in handling animals.
Steve, was indeed a brave man, last year he was attacked by a croc and his arm and shoulder tissues were damaged and he joked abt not having a bicep on one arm. Ironically while handling deadly animals he used to tell the camera very casually that if the slightest bit went wrong he’d be dead in such and such duration…
Was a great guy, a rare breed. I’m really sad, but he died a brave death, a kind of death perhaps he would have wished for. He was a free adventurous soul, loved action and nature and, lived a healthy fulfilling life, died young doing what he loved most and has left behind tremendous inspiration and research in his field, his family, wife, daughter and son will hopefully carry on his legacy. Steve shall live as ‘The Australia Zoo’.
The camera must’ve captured the entire climax scene.

Super guy...the snake thing was incredible...a fearless man...and an entertaining man...
Its just unfortunate that a supposedly harmless stingray was the cuase of death...

Steve Irvin is dead!
I always admired him for his love of nature and wild life. His unique style and atire will be long remembered next to the unreal Crocodile Dundee.
Deadly Stingray barb pierced right through his heart during a scuba diving expedition killing him instantly.
His tragic death will create a vaccum in zoological research and the real wild life adventure lovers all over the world.

I will miss Steve Erwin.. He did so much for conservation and wildlife...
What a personality, he will be missed.
