Re: Stephen R. Covey - How much will u pay?

I wouldn’t pay a cent!

The problem I have with motivational speakers, consultants and publishers is that TRUE motivation comes from within an individual… and no external force… be it a person, a product, a process or a strategy can motivate someone to do something that they don’t already want to do.

This billion dollar motivation industry is built on mass producing magic potions, universal remedies and quick fixes for people who feel satisfied being told that they are victims of things beyond their control. It's a profitable business because their is a huge niche in people who enjoy pitying themselves for their conditions... but to me falling for these gimmicks is an endless cycle

Don’t get me wrong though – I really believe in the value of a good coach and mentor… but my problem is with these Rah-Rah sessions which make the audience feel great only to have them regress back to their original miserable state after a few days…

A long-term change in behavior is only possible when a person truly and genuinely wants to effect that change in his/her life and values the positive outcomes of the change.

Re: Stephen R. Covey - How much will u pay?

Very much like Dieting .. No??

Re: Stephen R. Covey - How much will u pay?

I dont agree with you 100% Umar. Lot of corporate entities invite such speakers and pay for their employees to go and attend such seminars. Their growth strategies include having their executives and upper management attend leadership workshops.

Just like everone is not going to get benefit from a $50,000 heart transplant surgery, everyone is not going to get value form leadership seminars.

You only get benefit if you need it.

Motivation maybe an inside factor, but it comes out of need, and to take care of that need, you need guidance

Re: Stephen R. Covey - How much will u pay?

yes very much alike in many ways.

Re: Stephen R. Covey - How much will u pay?

I know that a lot of organizations get these speakers... I've been to a lot of these inspirational key notes etc... but always come out with my head shaking in disbelief that they were paid tens of thousands of dollars to say something that all rational thinking individuals would already know.

Again, my problem is not with the speakers... they may be excellent coaches and mentors... it's just that a quick-fix solution CANNOT change long term behaviors and there is no universal remedy for psychological issues.

Re: Stephen R. Covey - How much will u pay?

Thank you ... :) feelings are mutual :-)

Re: Stephen R. Covey - How much will u pay?

It is a million dollar operative phrase that you used Umar. This is exactly what is lacking in our corporate and business society. Thus the need of such seminars

Re: Stephen R. Covey - How much will u pay?

I dont think that they provide quick fix. They rather give you a long term thought process.

Re: Stephen R. Covey - How much will u pay?

so say that u need to go on a diet and u want to lose weight with all your heart and soul and but you haven't a clue on where to start.... won't u need a program , a guide to follow.. som principles to make your diet actually work..

i think that these lectures only work when we are willing just as much from within..

Re: Stephen R. Covey - How much will u pay?

i have to agree with Umar Talib ......it truly amazes me that we as a race have reached the point of such insecurity abour our "self-worth" that we need others to tell us what to do and how to live our lives ...AND we pay them to tell us this .....

Motivational seminars etc are good but not when they come
with a price ...... Ur paying them to give u free advice !!!!

Its like Hin Didi mentioned about Dieting ...U don't lose weight because U read a book or someone told u to ...smiliarly U can never change or be motivated to make a change just because U get a feelgood lecture from someone who was paid *thousands to give it ...the only person feeling good after that lecture is the person who delivered it .....and why wouldn't he ?*
......he is literally laughing his way to the bank !

Re: Stephen R. Covey - How much will u pay?

My point also

Re: Stephen R. Covey - How much will u pay?

so the man got his MBA from Harvard.. wont u pay him a cpl thousands.. :hehe:

Re: Stephen R. Covey - How much will u pay?

note really - and if their intention is such than the method is flawed... a long-term solution requires engagement and a seminar is not quite the tool to
engage people in long term behavior modification.

Well... a genuine and honest dose of self-analysis and/or a talk with my dad or a friend who can help me look beyond my personally created artifices
does the trick for me.

Re: Stephen R. Covey - How much will u pay?

Motivation Seminars is a wrong term. They should be (and are) called Leadership seminars. They dont motivate you for nothing, They teach you how to assume leadership role in your life.

Why do we need marriage counselors, Lawyers, Doctors, Accountants..... They are all proffessional who help you where you need an expert to provide you with a resolution.
