I assumed you meant that muslims should not be in the field of scince/medicine because of their ethical beliefs, my bad.
No idea who Zaid Hamid is, I tend to stick with the the scholars/shaykhs I trust rather than listening to everyone, so I don't know many of the popular ones.
You quoted the bit about where he said the hadith, I would trust him with the authenticity of that. I didn't mention any thing he said about the worldly medicinal stuff just because I only went to see him once and I don't know how trustworthy he is with modern medicine.
Not only that, he calls himself a "Defense Analyst" :p
Eurghz, kfb. Maybe I'll need to get myself a jihadi sword, it's stupid people like him that taint the reputation of Islamic scholars, not that he could call himself a scholar he's an engineer! How did he even get the job of being a aalim/journalist/'defence analyst'?

ZOMG he has over 12000 followers, HOW?
By playing on the insecurities and frustrations of the Pakistani people, esp the youth (pun intended).
For quite some time, he's been riding a wave of conspiracy theories propagated by the Pakistani media. It works rather well with the illiterate Pakistani masses who, instead of doing anything about the current situation, conveniently blame it on "Amrika".
As to how he got so many followers, in Pakistan, speak about how America and India are behind all problems, criticize politicians and glorify Islam and you are guaranteed an audience.

As if we haven't all heard the 'blame Amreeka' conspiracy theories before. It's the same in western countries tbh, you only have to don a jubba and speak Arabic fluently to have a flock of people following you, anyone who's read a book is a 'scholar'. They fail to recognize that you need decades of education before you can compare yourself to a proper scholar/shaykh.
It all leads back to the lack of education, western and Islamic. if only people were taught the real Islam, maybe then they wouldn't be so easily impressed by crack pots and Bin Laden supporters.
