Srilanka Tour of Pakistan - News/Updates

Pakistan to switch to SL if Indians don’t come

KARACHI: Pakistan are considering the option of playing Tests and One-day Internationals against Sri Lanka next month in case India refuse to visit here for a series scheduled for January-February.

Sources in the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) told ‘The News’ that playing a series against Sri Lanka either at home or abroad will be the only reasonable option left for Pakistan if MS Dhoni’s men decided against coming here next month.

No major Test-playing nation is free of international commitments during January-February when the Indians were scheduled to visit Pakistan for three Tests, five One-day Internationals and a Twenty20 International except for Sri Lanka, who could be available after hosting Bangladesh.

Obviously this is just a consideration at this moment. In the past we have seen that PCB have confirmed tours and then later we heard something totally different from the other boards. Lets hope it doesn’t happen. However I am still hoping that the situation doesn’t arise at all for Pakistan to consider a back-up.

Re: Pakistan to switch to SL if Indians don’t come

that'll be great. I want to see mendis against younis khan. Such a great match up that would be. I really also want to see sangakarra batting again against Akhtar as well.

The bigger question is, who will Pakistan switch to in 3 years if the rest of the countries don't visit Pakistan for any of its share of World Cup matches? Where does Pakistan turn then, to Associate playing countries or the "developing" countries like China?

This is a big news, if tour is canceled. Don't even worry about the short-term effects, as it may just cost Pakistan a place to stage World Cup matches in the long-run. No, the tour should not be canceled for the sake of bringing peace to people on both sides (the last line effectively used by ECB over the past week).

Re: Pakistan to switch to SL if Indians don’t come

its a bit more clear now after the statement of Ranatunga. I guess with this degree of public assurance, Pakistan should push for india to make decision ASAP. I am sure Pakistan dont want to wait for tour to be called of a day before just like Hockey Team Tour.

Cricinfo - We can tour Pakistan if India don’t - Ranatunga

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) chairman Arjuna Ranatunga has said Sri Lanka are ready to play Pakistan if India’s visit next month is called off, the current probable scenario. “We will not hesitate sending our team to Pakistan if we are invited,” Ranatunga told PTI.

Security concerns in the wake of the Mumbai terror attacks put India’s tour in doubt and the current political and diplomatic tensions make it highly unlikely that India’s tour - for three Tests, five ODIs and a Twenty20 international from January 6-February 19 - will go ahead.

Ranatunga, however, was confident Pakistan would provide enough security to the Sri Lankan players. “Pakistan has proved it can provide adequate security, as it did during the Asia Cup Cricket tournament,” he said.

The rescheduled itinerary would perhaps benefit both teams. Sri Lanka will be facing a drought in terms of cricket, following the tour of Bangladesh in December-January. After the two Tests and a tri-series, involving Zimbabwe as the third team, their next assignment will only be in June when they take part in the World Twenty20 in England.

Similarly, Pakistan have not played any Tests in 2008 and their last one-day series was against West Indies in Abu Dhabi in November.

Re: Pakistan to switch to SL if Indians don’t come

(CricInfo). Sri Lanka have confirmed the tour. Pakistan have sent the itinerary for 3 tests, 3 ODI’s and a Twenty20.

some good news at last for the cricket-starved public of Pakistan. Should be an interesting series if all palyers are fit

And let's hope that the series passes off without any major incident.

At this end Sri Lanka who are almost on the same flight as Pakistan were more than interested may be for more than one reason, but now Pakistan Cricket Board’s Chief Operating Officer Salim Altaf says that hosting Sri Lanka would be almost impossible due to financial constraints as they would not be able to pay guarantee monie (The Sunday Times).

Do not know how legitimate is this coming out with no sources besides mentioning the name of a PCB employee.

Re: Pakistan to switch to SL if Indians don’t come

Now look at this:

The ICC has cast doubt on the viability of Pakistan as a venue for international cricket by announcing it will conduct an independent security assessment of the country before appointing officials for Sri Lanka’s tour next month (CricInfo).

And as a side note, early good-bye to Champions Trophy:

“Lorgat, however, said a final decision on Pakistan’s hosting rights of the Champions Trophy will be taken at the ICC’s Executive Board meeting in January.”

I think we can all now forget about hosting next year's Champions' Trophy

The ICC seems to be have two yardsticks, one for Pakistan and one for the rest of the world. But one must also think about the whole situation with a cool head. God forbid if one of the match officials is hurt or killed by a retard, it would be a major emarrassment for the whole country.

btw who is this Mirza Ruswa Lorgat?

Kamran Abbasi's Spin

India's unfortunate decision to cancel their tour of Pakistan is a serious blow to cricket in South Asia. The decision is a political one, and one I believe to be incorrect. Perpetrators of atrocities will be encouraged by the political divisions they create. Disharmony and conflict sustain them.

Cricketers and cricket fans have often shown that the regional instinct for friendship is greater than the desire to destroy each other. The only glimmer of hope is that the Indian government sees the wisdom in friendship but has judged the mood of its people will not tolerate a sporting encounter with Pakistan just yet.

As appalling as India's decision is to Pakistan fans, Sri Lanka's quick acceptance is a boost. The state of Pakistan cricket is such that it must seek willing opposition at home, abroad, and on neutral venues. International cricket must become the rule again and not the exception.

All of which makes Haroon Lorgat's reference to a security inspection on behalf of ICC officials even more surprising. ICC's role, with reference to Pakistan, has to be to allow willing nations to tour. The world of international cricket is already too small to bear the loss of emerging nations like Zimbabwe and Bangladesh, and established ones like Pakistan.

The security survey for officials would also have been an unprecedented move by ICC, adding strength to the argument that the international cricket community is displaying double standards in its treatment of Pakistan. Little wonder, then, that the ICC media machine rapidly issued clarifications of Lorgat's comment, which reads perfectly clearly in its original form.

Pakistan cricket is in a mess but so is ICC, because a shrinking cricket world means that it is hostage to the whims of one or two powerful members. The myopic view is to bend to that power, which is a dangerous mistake. But the ICC has yet to demonstrate that it has a viable long-term strategy to allow international cricket to flourish or the courage to stand up to its most dominant members.

ICC's main hope as an organisation is to grow its membership. Instead, it is an organisation stricken by its failure to ensure that its least powerful or least desirable constituents are not marginalised.

People are more tolerating of a series that took place right after the blasts on their home turf.

Regardless of ICC sending its security team for pre-inspection, had it been Australia coming for the tour, ICC wouldn't need to send their experts down for inspection, because the individual country's decision overrules ICC's decision (case in point: Champions Trophy). It will be interesting if ICC disputes the Sri Lankan tour due to lack of security or conditions in Pakistan. I don't know where Pakistan will turn to then.

Sri Lanka to reconsider Pakistan tour

Sri Lanka’s tour of Pakistan, the replacement for India’s cancelled visit early next year, is in doubt after Sri Lanka’s sports minister Gamini Lokuge said he would hold discussions with the country’s president Mahinda Rajapaksa and wait for word from the foreign ministry regarding the issue.

Cricinfo - Sri Lanka to reconsider Pakistan tour

tsk tsk tsk!

In the light of current Indian Propaganda and dirty tactics it is the need of
the hour to shun all sports or social ties with any indian element at home or abroad.

This tour should not be cancelled but Pakistan should take credit for its cancellation and should also make it clear to the ICC that their biased stand with India will not go down well with Pakistan-ICC ties.

Pakistan should and will make SL tour on its priority list and at the same time
advice BCCI to come clear of its comittments.

ECB should be ashamed of its unclear mentality for 1st pulling off from the indian tour and than decides to go back in after some high level face saving persuation, just so that they could give the Indians their 'win' on the platter.

u forgot to mention IPL...money is the tune these englishtani dance to....like kothay-walis do in india n pak...

Oh dear must be disappointment for all those who were waiting for the tour to be cancelled. Tsk, Tsk Tsk

Re: Pakistan to switch to SL if Indians don’t come

Sri Lanka want to shorten Pakistan tour (CricInfo).

Re: Pakistan to switch to SL if Indians don’t come

Series still under clouds.

SL now wants to “rest” and come to Pakistan on 15th Feb instead of 20th Jan as scheduled. I guess SL board is giving way to immense pressure of BCCI/Indian Govt. They are now just trying things so that somehow Pakistan can say … “NO thats not possible”

As per SL board, SL players want rest of almost 5 weeks although I think for professionals 2-3 weeks of rest should do.

SL ke nakhray...

BBC Urdu uses one tough font, it gets hard to focus and read.

On a sidenote, I was reading this news piece yesterday and thinking whether, realistically speaking, Pakistan can revive an “icon” 5-test series with a country, perhaps in the future or just down the road. Oh well.

Firstly, Pakistan has a say in this. If Sri Lanka and Pakistan were meeting at Abu Dhabi for the series, then Pakistan “may” consider Sri Lanka’s position, considering the neutral venue. Otherwise, the series is being played on home soil, so Pakistan has the final say.

And we are again playing 5-match ODI series with Bangladesh? Good grief already.

Re: Pakistan to switch to SL if Indians don’t come

Finally managed to reach the end of BBC news report.

The last paragraph does not make sense, from how they worded it. They are making it look like the fate of Champions Trophy depends upon the outcome of Sri Lankan series and how "hospitable" Pakistan's services will be perceived, which is not all true. The chances looked bleaked before and after India's withdrawal, chances of CT are distant.
