Sri Lanka-Pakistan cricket is vaguely akin to a backyard tussle between two brothers rigged by their parents to keep peace in the family. The older wins one, the younger takes the next and so it has been for 10 of their past 14 series. Their latest bout was squared in a twilit Sharjah in astonishing circumstances, but in the six months since, little brother has become a world champion, surprised England on their turf, and was surprised by South Africa on home turf. The elder one, though, has been grounded.
Misbah-ul-Haq, the Pakistan captain, insisted that his team had bucked the rust that had gathered without top-level cricket. The squad had simulated match conditions during an extensive camp in Karachi under Waqar Younis, who begins his second stint as head coach in Galle.
Pakistan want to end an eight-year drought without a Test win in Sri Lanka and Waqar’s return and his familiarity with the younger players might assist in controlling their output better. Opener Khurram Manzoor bagged a pair after his 146 in Abu Dhabi. Left-arm seamer Rahat Ali accounted for only two wickets against Sri Lanka in the UAE after snagging a second five-wicket haul in Zimbabwe. Azhar Ali carried eight innings with scores of less than 20 before spearheading the Sharjah coup.
In addition to plumbing the best out of themselves, Pakistan will have to mute Sri Lanka’s first and usually reliable line of defence - Mahela Jayawardene, in his penultimate Test and Kumar Sangakkara, whose recent form - 938 runs in 10 innings - does not agree with the law of averages. Galle has dressed up for Jayawardene’s farewell and the retiring batsman will hope he can mimic billboards of his shots skirting into the gap and off to the fence. Sri Lanka’s tireless spin attack would have been grateful for the break - Rangana Herath busted his back for 172 overs against South Africa, Dilruwan Perera skipped in for 158.3 - but it doesn’t take much for their stranglehold to set in.

Shaminda Eranga](http://www.espncricinfo.com/srilanka/content/player/267414.html) fronted up to an angry South African attack with a torn webbing at Galle and was lost for the next Test. He has been declared fully fit by his captain and is expected to shoulder Sri Lanka’s seam threat without Suranga Lakmal. The new-ball pair had been in the kind of sync ballroom dancers would envy, but there is depth in the form of a rejuvenated Dhammika Prasad and Nuwan Pradeep.
Pakistan were 85 for 5 with Shane Bond dismissing a two-year hiatus from Tests and conjured 150kph thunderbolts at will. A 19-year old Umar Akmal](http://www.espncricinfo.com/pakistan/content/player/317273.html) forgot it was his debut, that it was the toughest form of cricket and pummeled a century that heralded him as the next big thing. Then 2009 became 2010 and Akmal faded badly. He was labelled irresponsible, he got into off-field incidents and his keeping standards inspired great frustration. He was cut-off from Tests for three years, but with Pakistan needing adventure, he has got another chance.
Teams news
Lahiru Thirimanne might still remember Dale Steyn’s sledge turned premonition of not seeing the batsman in Colombo after twin failures in Galle. This time though Kithuruwan Vithanage seems set to claim his spot in the XI. Sri Lanka’s management has had to channel a monk’s patience in building for the future, but as they showed with Dinesh Chandimal’s reassignment to the A team, tough love is never far off.
Sri Lanka (probable): 1 Upul Tharanga, 2 Kaushal Silva, 3 Kumar Sangakkara, 4 Mahela Jayawardene, 5 Angelo Mathews (capt), 6 Kithuruwan Vithanage, 7 Niroshan Dickwella (wk), 8 Dilruwan Perera, 9 Nuwan Pradeep/ Dhammika Prasad, 10 Rangana Herath, 11 Shaminda Eranga
Only two members of the Pakistan squad can draw inspiration from recent competitive experience. Saeed Ajmal has been a talisman for Worcestershire in the 2014 English county season - 63 wickets in nine first-class matches - to push them to top the second-division points table. Junaid Khan, having seemed worn towards the end of the last international season, has been just as instrumental in Lancashire heading the NatWest t20 Blast. Rebooting to Test cricket would be a priority for them and the entire squad.
Pakistan (probabale): 1 Khurram Manzoor, 2 Ahmed Shehzad, 3 Azhar Ali, 4 Younis Khan, 5 Misbah-ul-Haq (capt), 6 Umar Akmal/ Asad Shafiq, 7 Sarfraz Ahmed (wk), 8 Abdur Rehman, 9 Mohammad Talha/ Wahab Riaz, 10 Saeed Ajmal, 11 Junaid Khan
Pitch and conditions
Since 2000, Sri Lanka have generally preferred to welcome their opposition at Galle, where they have cultivated 11 wins in 20 Tests. Both teams’ relentless spin attacks will find little to fault the surface, while the dryness would aid seamers searching for reverse swing. However, the inter-monsoon rain is expected to play party pooper. It has become regular over the past few days and the Galle track and outfield has looked less abrasive than when South Africa visited.
Stats and trivia

  • Mahela Jayawardene’s average of 32.16 against Pakistan is his lowest against all Test-playing nations

  • Pakistan, who had floated to third place in the ICC rankings despite not playing any cricket since January, will drop to sixth if they lose the seriesQuotes
“Players like Mahela [Jayawardene] rarely come around in any country. The support he has given me until now is something I very much appreciate.”

Angelo Mathews pays tribute to his senior’s 17-year career
“We tried our level best to get ready for this series, we had a good training camp in Karachi before we came here. Everybody is ready for the series.”

Misbah-ul-Haq and Pakistan are raring to go.

Re: Pakistan V SL

Pakistan's bowling seems bit weak. Only four bowlers. Where have those glory days gone.

Re: Pakistan V SL

But look at the batting. I'd imagine 7 batsmen should be able to score 300+ runs.

Re: Pakistan V SL

I have lot of hopes from Junaid Khan that if Misbah use him wisely, he can deliver especially when Waqar is also there to train them. Sri Lankans play spinners easily so I don’t think so we should go with two spinners in this match.

News : Lakmal out of Pakistan Tests

Series/Tournaments: Pakistan tour of Sri Lanka
Teams: Sri Lanka

For a team that had only four Tests to play in 2013, Sri Lanka have had a crammed eight months since December of last year. In that time Sri Lanka have had full away tours to the UAE, Bangladesh and England, have played the maximum number of possible games in the Asia Cup and World T20, all before last month’s South Africa tour, which was their first home assignment of the year.
Though fans have been glad for the surfeit of cricket, the schedule has begun to take a toll on the cricketers. The pace attack in particular has been affected. Nuwan Pradeep missed the South Africa series with injury, before Shaminda Eranga was also forced out of action for nine of the ten Test-match days in July.
Both had recovered in time to be in contention for the first Test against Pakistan, but Sri Lanka are now without their other key seam bowler, Suranga Lakmal, after he injured his ankle during the last Test match. Lakmal had also missed the England Tests with a hamstring tear.
“Eranga is fully fit but with Suranga out of the series, either Eranga or Suranga have been injured from the Bangladesh series onwards,” captain Angelo Mathews said. "We didn’t have both of them together - which would have been a very formidable attack. But I still have good options in Dhammika Prasad and Nuwan Pradeep. They’ve bowled pretty well in the recent past. And the two spinners have been bowling magnificently. I feel that I’ve got the bowling attack to take 20 wickets."

Prasad and Pradeep had both contributed to the series victory in England, but their work rates have been light in comparison to the spin bowlers’ labours. Rangana Herath has borne the heaviest load, delivering 172 overs in the two Tests against South Africa, only three weeks after he had delivered 127.3 overs in two Tests in England. Four Sri Lanka bowlers are in this year’s top five for most Test overs bowled, including the December 31 Abu Dhabi Test, which means Herath has bowled 491.4 overs - 209.4 more than anyone else. With another spin-friendly Galle pitch on the cards, he may not have much respite in this series, Mathews suggested.
“We get a lot of slow turning tracks here and the spinners come into play more often than not,” Mathews said. “Rangana has been our No.1 spinner for so many years now, after Muttiah Muralitharan’s retirement. Playing in Sri Lanka, it’s unfortunate that he has to bowl a lot of overs, but that’s the truth.”

Pakistan, meanwhile, have had no international commitments since the World T20 ended in early April. Their last Test had in fact been against Sri Lanka, in late January. Opponents coming off a long break might usually be cause for encouragement for the other side, but given the signs of fatigue in his own team, Mathews was not so sure.
“Pakistan have had a good rest whereas we’ve been playing continuous cricket,” he said. “It’s always good to get a bit of a rest as well, to refresh your minds and bodies. That’s the challenge we are facing as players. When you’re playing constantly, you get drained mentally and physically. But the challenge for us is to try and be consistent. It works both ways. They can be a bit rusty, but you never know. They are very unpredictable. They come out all guns blazing. They are a very formidable team when it comes to Tests.”
The Galle stadium has been decked out in Mahela Jayawardene posters and billboards ahead of his final Test at a venue that has been the site of some of his greatest innings, from the maiden ton against New Zealand to the 180 against England in 2012. A grand farewell is being planned for Jayawardene at the SSC, which is his home ground, but emotions have already begun running high in the Sri Lanka dressing room, which will feel his absence keenly, Mathews said.
"I’m trying my best to make him play for another year, but unfortunately it’s going to end. What a great player he is. The contribution he has made for Sri Lanka cricket for the past 16-17 years is unbelievable - scoring 10,000 runs in both formats.
“On and off the field he is a great gentleman, and I personally learned a lot from him. When I walked into the team he was my first captain and he treated everyone the same. It’s very hard to not have him in a team. Any captain would love to have a guy like Mahela. It’s going to be a sad moment for Sri Lanka cricket, but we can cherish the things he’s done in the past.”

Re: Pakistan V SL

9.15 am Pakistan are back. It's been a long while. Since beating Sri Lanka in that crazy chase in Sharjah, they have been dormant. They could be fresh or they could be rusty. Sri Lanka, on the other hand, have been one of the busier sides. They have played six Tests in the meantime. It could be said that they are either on a roll or a bit tired. You will see one of the labels slapped accordingly depending on which team does better in the Test series here.
The series has also a huge significance for both teams and some individuals. Pakistan didn't win a Test on their last two Test tours here, Sri Lanka lost a series to South Africa recently, Mahela Jayawardene is playing his last two Tests and would want to finish on a high. There is also the contest between the two captains, who, as Andrew Fernando writes,

Re: Pakistan V SL

Pakistan lost two early N quick wickets to Dhammika Prasad...he has taken 2 wickets for 15 runs. the openers Khurram Manzoor and Ahmad Shehzad are gone for 3 and 4 runs respectively.

Younus Khan is in...he has quite a bit of experience...lets see what he can do.

Re: Pakistan V SL

Pakistan desperately needs a batting all rounder in Test Team. I am still unable to think that why No Fawad Alam in Tests? His batting style purely suits for tests.

Re: Pakistan V SL

I don't know when they will learn how to rotate strike and take singles.

Re: Pakistan V SL

Azhar 26 from 38 took only 2 singles
Younis 4 from 22 balls took only 1 singles

I don't know how and when they will learn to take singles

Re: Pakistan V SL

2 or 3 single in an over release the pressure.

Re: Pakistan V SL

I wish Misbah and Younis leaves the cricket just like they same way.

Misbah walks into a crisis again

Herath to Azhar Ali, OUT, beautifully bowled! That has clipped the off stump and it takes a while before anyone realises it... In fact the keeper and the bowler go on for an appeal for caught behind, but Azhar starts walking once he sees the off bail is off. That one was bowled with a round-arm action, it drifted in, lured Azhar into his front-foot lunge, dipped and spun past the outside edge to kiss the off stump.. A Herath special that one..
Azhar Ali b Herath 30 (69b 5x4 0x6) SR: 43.47

Re: Pakistan V SL

Now Pakistan has Sri Lanka trapped. With the arrival of the great Misbah to join Younus. The great walls. And pillars of boredom.

Re: Pakistan V SL

MAB: "I wonder if Misbah will ever get a chance to come into the crease at peace before his career ends, I am not sure if anybody in Pakistan's management thinking to find replacement of Misbah or Younis in near future. You can't compete on international test level with this kind of fragile & inconsistent batting performance."

Re: Pakistan V SL

Azhar got out to a beauty, the two openers performed miserably. misbah and Younis once again to rescue. Where will Pakistan be without them?

Re: Pakistan V SL

Younis has played strokes every where in the ground except Mid on
