I am sure many of you have come across a the form of prayer that we do in front of Lord Ganesha, the God of accomplishments and detroyer of difficulties. In Thamizh this is called “thoppukarnam”. Normal days devotees do a few of these and on special days 108 of them.
Now researchers have proved beyond doubt the amazing benefits of thoppukarnam! Thank you Gajanana!
Re: Sri Ganesha prayer custom leads to super brain!
While I deeply respect your prayer to Ganpati, I'd refrain from going down the path you're going. I tell my fellow muslims to do the same when I get the chance, when they talk about memorizing the Quran (having the side-effect of "sharpening memory") and the 5-time daily prayer (having the side-effect of "being the best daily exercise")

Salam bro,
Wouldn't that deny the fact that spiritual self and physical self are inter-related, and that they affect each other?
Re: Sri Ganesha prayer custom leads to super brain!
There is hardly any "proof" that it helps the brain or damages it. Just a few people telling their "personal" experience. Similar claims have been made about whole lot of useless therapies like homeopathy, pshychics etc.
A proof means a blinded study with enopugh number with sufficient power to demonstarate difference between experimental and control groups.

I just watched the video....Believe me this is not the first time I saw this super brain yoga, I've seen others doing it before for many times in Pakistan in my school.

You are spot on Hareem.
If this made brains super, the students in villages and state schools in Pakistan would have been the most intelligent people in the world.

Just watch the video linked fully - they show brain scans that clearly prove the beneficial effects.
You don't need blind tests when you can just scan and see for yourself!

That is not surprising - it is an age old Hindu custom, done as part of Sri Ganesha prayers and it is possible that when people separated from the religion, some of the practices continued.
Similarly you might have heard of Pranayamam - this also has been an integral part of almost all Hindu prayer rituals but the particular type of breadth control is practiced by many non-Hindus as breathing exercise techniques.
Re: Sri Ganesha prayer custom leads to super brain!
Just curious.....Why is an exercise termed "Prayer"?
Good question. In fact I am finding more and more physical and mental exercises have been intertwined as and into Hindu prayer rituals. For example, I will cite Pranayamam (breath control), SuryaNamaskaram (eye sight and focus) as some of the more commonly known and practiced ones.
Even people who do not understand the meaning of certain mantras follow these somewhat blindly. If they do it right the benefits are there.
The most revered of all mantras, the Gayathri Mahamantra also comes with a certain way it is to be uttered which is supposed work many benefits - I am just learning some of this

Stircrasy
Is there any reference for this Yoga in Hindu Scriptures?
I don't know, but I'll try and find out. This is something that all of us where taught to do for generations as part of praying. Many of us, including myself, stopped doing it because it looked so stupid to be clutching ones earlobes in public and going up and down! Then I for some inexplicable reason re-started it last year after watching a very old and very highly respected man do it without caring who thought what of him. Now ofcourse I am happy I did that!
BTW I have never heard of this (thopukarnam) referred to as yoga before - I'll have to check
