I don’t want this to be a sunni vs. shia match, but i read this in an article a while back, that’s why I thought that at one time islam deemed it okay to marry 2 sisters:
Imam of Ahl e Sunnah Al Hafiz Jajauddin Suyuti in his Durre Manthur records the following fatwa of Muaweyah (L):
"Qasim bin Muhammad records that Muaweyah was asked whether it was permissible for a man to marry two sisters at any one given time. Muaweyah replied ‘There is nothing wrong with that’. Upon hearing this reply, Numan bin Basheer asked ‘You have issued this fatwa?’ to which Muaweyah replied ‘yes’.
Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe there are a few enlightened Sunnis out there. But most that I have encountered say that he was a Sahaba of the Prophet (so that naturally makes him a good Muslim) and therefore we must not talk about him in any negative way. I can imagine that a 100 years from now a Sunni Iraqi will probably be saying the same thing about Saddam.
Again a lame attempt from another person to muddy the waters of Islam. When you find a Hadith going against Quarn, you are to ignore it. It cannot be authetic. Quran has clearly stated that you CANNOT marry two sisters, than there is no room for a hadith contradicting it.
Kaleem,
That is true. But what I posted is not really a hadith, it's a recordation of history stating Muaweyah's fatwa. But since Muaweyah trangressed and went against the Quran, his fatwa should be ignored.
Indeed, he was one of the Sahabah and a highly competent ruler on top of that. He created the centralised multi-faith civil service that enabled the Islamic state to effectively control its territories from Damascus without falling apart for several hundred years.
He had one major failing, however, which was that he was responsible for endind Khilafat and introducing Malikat (Kingship) when he had his son, Yazid, appointed to be his successor, and thus laying the path for tyranny.
I believe it was Hassan who was poisoned by Mu'awiyah. Aisha warred against Ali, but ultimately according to some historical sources, Aisha was murdered by Muawiyah as well.
I'm trying to look up a concise history of it all and where shias and muslims stand. i know its offtopic, but I'm confused because our old islamic school teacher told us one version of the story - i thought everyone hated muawiyah - all muslims that is.
Anyone know of a short concise article that explains the history and where shias and sunnis stand on the issue?
The circumstance of who poisoned Imam Hassan (ra) are still not clear. Someone instigated his wife to do the deed. What is clear is that his death paved the way for Yazid to succeed Muawiyyah (ra).
Bibi Aisha (ra) rebelled against the Khalifa and Ameer-ul-Muslimeen Ali Ibn Abu Talib (ra)
