Speaking properly

I stutter. I use “like” “ya know” and those type of words too much now when talking and even posting here or in msn/aim convos with friends. I remember a time when speaking that way was reserved for “airheads” or stupid girls and even if we spoke it, it took some sort of effort to keep writing “like”.. but im finding that to be my second nature now :bummer: I’ve yet to make this mistake on any academic paper, my resume or even in an email to a professor so I’m not too worried.. but I’m gonna–going to start applying for jobs and internships soon so I have to be able to NOT stutter or talk like a valley grl.. any suggestions? :halo:

Re: Speaking properly

Yes, you're definitely going to have to shape up the way you talk in a professional environment.

Re: Speaking properly

Really? I did not know that. Any suggestions would be welcome

Re: Speaking properly

Umm I don't think it should be a problem if u talk the way u do essentially with ur friends and such, but yep in a proffesional environment I guess uve to only be careful while writing really, not as much while talking cos I dun think neone really speaks that *shudh *neway. It really depends on the profession you choose. While you'll have to really watch ur grammer in certain places, it won't be a big deal in others.

Re: Speaking properly

I do it all the time as well, especially "like"... i don't think it will be a problem at interviews or internships. just don't think too much about it when you're at interview. you can do several mock interviews and count how many fillers you use (uhm, like, you know) and see whether you can reduce them.

Re: Speaking properly

I don’t have a prob with using words “like” “umm” but I do have a prob in western society using words with goura baanders and kala jinss or any other non-muslim such as “alhamdullilah” or “insha’allah” I just can’t help it. Most of my frens end up knowing what it means and now they say it with me  Alhamdullilah. But when with prof..I kind have to hold it back but sometimes I just can’t help it :smack:

Re: Speaking properly

I don't mean to boast but people often comment on how well I speak, and part of my secret is constantly reading "Rabbish rahli sadri wa ya sirli amri wah-lul uqdatam millisani yafkahu qawli". It comes from an authentic hadith on speech and being able to communicate effectively.

Re: Speaking properly

few tips hun!

grab your book and read it out loud while recording your voice :~) . That will help you alot.

Another way is facing the fear and start swimming with the sharks  -

International toastmasters - great place to develop speaking skills, behaviour, body language etc. Its an organization that helps someone come out of a closet i think. After joining it i never stopped doing :bukbuk:

Or sing - again record your voice… and hear it over and over again

i cant say few words :frowning: - working on it

Re: Speaking properly

im like u sara..i also stutter...i used to stutter a lot when i was younger, but now that im older its better...but here and there i do stutter..i hate when i stutter at work...whenver i know im giogn to stutter, i just stop and pause, breathe and speak slowly..thats also my problem...i speak fast and i mutter...its so not good for work...i also talk like a "valley girl"..my writing engligh is realy good...really formal...but having a conversation with me (especially with senior pple form work)....i hate it!!! i was never much of a public speaker at school, and was very quiet...this is my first job after school, and ive been here for almost 3 years...and im learning to speak up more and be able to speak more eloqently (i think thats the word..)...i think i need to start reading more...i used to read a lot when i was younger and pick up more "hard words"..the net and tv is ruining my way of speaking.....
and i hate the sound of my voice..i sound like a "white girl"..and on the phone i sound a like a kid....i hate it when telemarketers call me and say "may i speak to ur mom or dad?"...lol...im like, sure...i'll have them call you..and hang up..lol...

Re: Speaking properly

The vocabulary you develop and use becomes critically important in determining how far you will go in life.

If you decide that it's okay to slack off and leave certain phrases in, then what's stopping you from using those same phrases when you shouldn't?

Re: Speaking properly

I've noticed that the better you're able to "present yourself", the further you'll go. Its always driven me nutso when proper language isnt used - I mean, when you read the current best-selling "romance" novels, they use "Dived" instead of "dove", "Lighted" instead of "lit" etc. What happened to irregular verbs....did someone magically turn them into regular verbs while I wasnt looking?????? So solly, this drives me nuts. Its worse than the habit of using "like" and "ya know".....pet peeve of mine!!

Re: Speaking properly

when i was a FOB i used to say GAWD (GOD) Vottar (Water) and Caugh (cough)

im so much more cooler now :smooth:

Re: Speaking properly

Perfect :k:

From Surah Ta’Ha, basically when Prophet Moses was asked to go talk to Pharoah then Prophet Moses made dua, which is this ayat asking Allah (s.w.t) to make his speech and him strong so then when he will speak everyone is able to understand him!

I agree with cat-woman on that, everytime I have any kind of presentation to make infront of 80 students…read that, trust me you will be appreciated the way you will present! :k:
