Although Pakistan lacked fire power in the absence of Akhtar and Gul (more a support bowler rather than a true strike bowler) in this test, they did n't really help themselves in the first innings by needlessly getting out to pull shots.
Back in the 70s and 80s when there was no concept of a minimum no. of overs/day, 300 was considered a good score. These days you have to remember it's theoretically a 450-over test. Sides like Australia can easily get 300 in 70-75 overs and if they do manage to get a first innings lead of 100-200 (like SA did in the first innings), then you really are up against it for the remaining 2.5 days or so. Hope we do a lot better esp. in the first innings of the next two games. Pakistan should aim to score 400-450 in the first innings of every test because the first innings really sets the tone for the remaining 3-4 days of a test match. 400 should be the benchmark for every test team in the first innings. Batting is never easy in the second innings on a wearing 4th or 5th day test pitch.
So Pakistan's 302 in the second innings was about ok IMO but their first innings total of 313 was well short of being a challenging score. That's where they lost the game. The inability of Rana and Nazir to take wickets also proved decisive.
198 was never going to test the South Africans on their own pitches.
I would make the following changes for the next game, drop Faisal and replace:
- him with Yousuf
- Rana with Akhtar
- Nazir with Gul (if fit) or Sami &
- bat Hameed or Asim Kamal (unlikely given Inzi's conservative nature) at 6

Hafeez failed in both innings so they could also try Hameed-Farhat as openers and play Asim Kamal at 6

Herschell Gibbs apologizes for his remarks, however Cricket SA will conduct their investigation and Gibbs will appear before a tribunal. It wud be unfair not to mention the background of this episode where Gibbs was abused by Pak supporters on the sidelines who were later ejected from the stadium.

Some of Rana Uncle's wickets esp. those inswinging yorkers directed at the base of the stumps in the recently concluded one-day series against WI reminded me of Waqar. So I don't know why he can't do the same in test matches where his figures are quite unflattering.

If just one wicket falls, then the gate will open and Pakistan can attack with Asif/danny so still there is hope for a repeat of multan

I am checking out in cric info only. Can anyone tell me what sort of a field is set now--is it attacking or defensive.
In my opinion, Inzamam should set attacking field to make batsmen do a mistake.

^attacking.match is gone now.Kanerira what a lousy effort,no wicket taken on a 5th day wicket.I think theres a case for Mushtaq Ahmad to come back and kaneria to be axed for the next match.Kaneria does'nt have a good straight delivery like warne and kumble or even mushtaq thats where he struggles.
