Sosa Caught with Cork

Its a fan’s worst nightmare. The baseball slugger, who is arguably the most liked, the most friendly, and one of the most devastating batters has just been caught.

Sammy Sosa’s bat broke during a match yesterday and what do they find inside? Cork? Since Cork makes the bat hit farther, so its a big no-no in professional baseball. Sosa was ejected from the match and all his bats are now send for review by MLB.

Sosa has apologized and said that he only uses corked bat for practice and it was an honest mistake to bring it on during a match, but in fact its really a hard sell for Sosa. For someone with 505 homeruns and most 60+ run seasons, this casts all the more doubts about his abilities and whether he used corked bats in many of these homeruns.

What a shame!

NO
No NO
NO

This can’t be true. My Sosa can’t do that. Oh my Cubs!.

:teary2: :teary2: :teary2:

I think its probably a one time deal and a honest mistake, if he had used it throughout his career, he would have been caught a long time ago.

No wonder the guy has 505 homers. I dont believe him for a second. The guy says he uses the bat just *"for batting practice -- just to put on a show for the fans ... I like to make people happy and I do that in batting practice." *

Sorry Mr. Sosa - I dont believe you. I am sure many of those homers were hit by Corked Bats.

I'd say the guy is still a legend. Not everyone can hit the ball that easy specially when the ball is coming towards you at 90+ mph, otherwise anyone could have just hold the bat and become a legend. :)

i don't believe him either. If he has done it now than you think this is the only time he has ever done it? Whats the probability that he used it once in his 5000 at bats and it was the only time and he got caught. I am sure he has done it before. In 1998 he had like 20ding dongs and all of a sudden next season he is hitting 70? Nah something was up. Steroids or something.

Are you saying that all these years he has been hitting homeruns is because of having a cork in his bat, how come after all these years he is finally caught and not before.

Friends with today's technology, players can not break rules that easily while on the field, we have seen the likes of Shoaib and Tendulkar temper with the ball's condition and then being caught on the camera, same would have happend had he done it before.
All of us have made some of the stupidist mistakes once in lifetime, and I think this is it for Samy.

Why he use bad bat practiceing? Because not allow in real match you better practicing same bat in practice and in real match. He is told a fibrication I think. But Sosa doing some charitable in his country (not USA but his old country) . So ok I am saying but we have to wait and see for future.

I think I just heard on CNN, that all his remaining bats are x-rayed by MLB and none were found to have cork. Ofcourse the actual results of the investigation are likely to come later. Sosa will most probably be suspended.

daaam on cubans!

That is my opinion and I think he is a Cheater and a Liar as well. God knows how many of his homers came from those Corked bats.

If you think he is a Saint then good for you.

The guy's a clear cheat. A clever ploy to only have one cork-filled bat just in case he gets caught.

The guy should be hung out to dry.

So when everyone thinks he is a cheater, liar, and scored most of his homeruns with a corked bat then fine, do we also agree the fact guys like Shoaib, Waqar, Azhar Mahmood, Tendulkar have all taken most of their wickets by ball tempering just because they were caught once or twice.

How hard is it for someone to pickup a wrong bat before going to bat?

No cork in Sosa’s 76 bats tested by MLB

By NANCY ARMOUR, AP Sports Writer
June 5, 2003
CHICAGO (AP) – The rest of Sammy Sosa’s bats were clean, just as he promised they’d be.

Now baseball officials have to decide what to do about the one that started this mess.

Bob Watson, baseball’s vice president in charge of discipline, was to be at Wrigley Field on Thursday, conducting interviews before deciding what punishment Sosa deserves for using a corked bat Tuesday night.

``Whatever they decide to do, I have to deal with it,‘’ Sosa said.

A piece of cork was found just above the handle in Sosa’s bat Tuesday night when it shattered after he grounded out in the first inning of the Chicago Cubs’ 3-2 victory. Sosa insists it was a mistake, saying he accidentally pulled out a bat he uses to put on home run displays for fans in batting practice.

Tests Wednesday appeared to support that. X-rays of 76 bats confiscated from Sosa’s locker Tuesday night found no cork or illegal substances, said Sandy Alderson, executive vice president of baseball operations in the commissioner’s office.

Good. That makes everybody feel a lot better,'' Atlanta's Chipper Jones said. It doesn’t take away from what happened, but it gives some validity to what Sammy was saying. If he’s got one bat that got mixed in with the rest of his bats, then I believe it was an honest mistake.‘’

Sosa’s bats in the Hall of Fame might still be examined, Alderson said. The Hall has five of Sosa’s bats, including the one he presented in mid-April, more than a week after he hit his 500th home run.

But the tests Wednesday went a long way toward easing people’s minds. Sosa was greeted with rousing cheers when he did his traditional sprint to right field Wednesday night, and fans gave him a standing ovation when he came to the plate in the first inning.

One fan held up a sign that read, ``Still loving Sammy.‘’

They know that I am an innocent person,'' Sosa said. When I went to right field, everybody was cheering for me. I feel very happy inside. It’s something I’m never going to forget.‘’

Sosa has been baseball’s quintessential good guy the last five seasons, a lovable slugger with an infectious smile and a feel-good story. While Mark McGwire and Barry Bonds got the home run records, Sosa got most of the adulation.

To get caught and it's Sammy -- that's a big deal. That's a huge deal,'' Cincinnati Reds pitcher Danny Graves said. That’s like saying Roger Clemens is scuffing the ball. It just totally breaks your heart, you know what I mean? I’m not saying Roger Clemens scuffs the ball. I’m just using his name because he’s the best pitcher in baseball.‘’

But Sosa swears he’s never used anything illegal. Dozens of his bats have broken over the years without anything suspicious being found.

And if he was trying to cheat, he said, why wouldn’t he have tried to grab the bat before anyone saw it?

I would have come back to the plate and picked up all the pieces, don't you think?'' he said. I didn’t pick it up. I went to the dugout. So you guys can see the difference.‘’

But it doesn’t mean he’s off the hook. Other players who’ve used corked bats have been suspended for up to 10 games, and Alderson said he thinks precedent will play a part in Watson’s decision.

Sosa can appeal any discipline imposed.

``I think it would be in everyone’s best interest to conclude this as quickly as possible, and be able to have a decision that is timely,‘’ Alderson said.

But how did this happen in the first place?

Sosa uses bats made by three different manufacturers. While each brand is visibly different, Alderson said all bats made by the same maker look similar. The bat Sosa used Tuesday night was made by Tuffbat.

Jones said it’s easy to see how Sosa could have grabbed the wrong bat.

I've got five boxes of bats in there,'' Jones said. Bat doesn’t feel good, you throw it in this box. Bat feels good, OK, that’s going to be a gamer. You go 10 at-bats without getting a hit, you throw it in a box, get a new one. You’re always interchanging.‘’

After what happened this week, baseball probably needs to address that, Alderson said.

If this was a batting practice bat, the possibility of confusing that bat would suggest that we probably ought to be awfully careful about having any of those bats around,'' he said. It’s not something we’ve looked at, but we will.‘’

^^ The critics are saying that since he was caught in the 1st innings (during the match on Tuesday) and ejected, so he had ample time to dispose off all incriminating bats and thus only gave up "clean" bats for review by MLB. Therefore its no surprise that all came out clean.

Funnily enough, ESPN had a 2 hour segment yesterday on this thing. All sport talk shows and news paper columns are filled with this story, and there are very few who actually believe what Sosa is trying to claim now. Even other baseball players are incredulous that Sosa is claiming he picked the "wrong" bat. May be. May be not.

A better, though slightly off topic, debate is whether a cork-filled bat is really a better equipment to hit homeruns. While its lighter than a regular bat, so u gain about 6" in a fast ball, the light weight means the ball won't be hit with the same power. So, end result, about the same as far as hits. However, practically, people have shown that using cork-filled bats, make for higher and longer hits.

Needless to say, baseball is shamed by its favorite ambassador. Whatever comes after the investigation, Sosa is stigmatized forever. Even if he gets into Hall of Fame. Plus he is not the first super super star of baseball caught cheating.

Correct, some of the people I talked to even told me that having a cork in the bat doesn't make it better to hit the ball with, I watched an interview on ESPN yesterday, in which Mark McGwire mentioned that having a bat corked does make it better.

And plus why would they take such a long time to check Sosa's locker, I think it was checked on tuesday night, and it took a while to check all 76 bats to see if anything was different.

Who can answer this question better than Sosa himself, He says he uses the bat *"for batting practice -- just to put on a show for the fans ... I like to make people happy and I do that in batting practice." *

Or for example former Royals outfielder Amos Otis, who hit 193 career home runs and afterward famously explained: *"I had enough cork and superballs in there to blow away anything. It probably meant about 193 home runs for me." *

Baseball is a dying game in USA, fewer people are coming to the stadiums and at this point one of their biggest stars is caught cheating.. I am sure MLB will do best to cover up this whole thing.

ppl watch out maybe 10dulkar using a rubber/cork mixture filled bat … i mean after all these boundries coming like a flash from his bat someone has to suspect this guys bats :hehe: :hehe: :rotfl: :rotfl:

so please don’t get offended (especially Tendya’s fans) by this as it’s just kidding nothing else

Chicago Cubs slugger Sammy Sosa has been suspended for 8 games for using a "corked" bat.

I was saying before also...bad bat is not alowed and so now suspending! I said cheating done and now proofed 100% I am saying!
