Son not talking at 2 yr

I read both of her books back to back. I thought her first book was a amazing just out lining the various type of paths you need to take. I had read up on the GFCF diet before but it did give me some background.

I wholeheartly agree with her that an average ped was not the best resource for my daughter’s diagnoses.

I had to do a lot of research on my own. I just could not rely on the doctors alone.

:k: I agree mama.

..and dads..

Re: Son not talking at 2 yr

We have almost planned to move to pk for 6 months to get all diagnosis done from AGA khan hospital.

Only thing is to move now or after 2 months.. as my daughter's school year will almost finish by than. but Ahmed will be 26 months by that time ???

His attnetion towards us has increased. Now TV is turned ON only during meal ( for 15 min only )
His eye contact is much better.. His socialization is very good, infact we dont feel him having any problem regarding socialization or going to strangers.
Still he is not responding to his name most of the times..
Hope to have more improvement ...

Re: Son not talking at 2 yr

I pray that Allah resolves your problem soon :hugz:

Re: Son not talking at 2 yr

saami, in addition to the wonderful things you're doing at home, you could look into finding a Speech/Language Pathologist to provide speech therapy/eval and an Occupational Therapist to provide general/attentional therapy and eval.

As we've been saying, it isnt the actual diagnosis that matters - in the end, its getting the right therapies in place quickly that will make the biggest difference for your boy.

Re: Son not talking at 2 yr

Saami - I am glad that you see progress. Don't wait for the doctors. Test, appointments can take a while so it's best to utilize the time you have now.

Start with Speech Therapy (at home or outside)

Important Milessotnes for speech for a 2 year old are:

  1. At least fifty words in their vocabulary
  2. Saying two and three word phrases
  3. Answering simple questions is also generally expected.

Children of this age are keen develop their language skills and learn by copying adults and older children.

Expose your child to Language
Do it all the time. Talk to your child about everything you're doing.
Identify the words for even the simplest objects and actions in your child's environment, and do it again.
Read with your child.
Read to your child.
Play word games.
Watch TV with your child and talk about what the characters are talking about. Ask your child questions that require more than a yes/no answer.
Invite your child to ask you questions.
Talk. Talk, talk, talk.

It really helped my daughter.

Re: Son not talking at 2 yr

Saami, my eldest still does not respond to his name when he's in his "zone". What works for him is when we say his name and touch him on the shoulder. The combination of sound and touch brings him out of his zone.

These are the kinds of tips and tricks that are a part of Speech and Occupational therapy.

Re: Son not talking at 2 yr

my son starts responding to his name sometime not always . we are using picturebooks and sometime he repeat some words but not in clear language .sometime he play with her sister also but still he do not understand simple instruction like give it to baba or bring the ball. can speech therapy help us in this regard?we are leaving for pakistan in 4-5 days to start his speech therapy. beside speech therapy what other therapies we should start to improve?

Re: Son not talking at 2 yr

Saami - *Speech therapy can help a lot. *

My daugther went from speaking one word "Ball"
to two words "gimme Ball"
to three and more words - "Give me ball please".

I would also suggest OT (occupational) and AB (Applied Behavior) therapy.

Re: Son not talking at 2 yr

Hi My son is 2 yrs. He also not talking yet.

I'm not worry because:

  1. My daughter start talking when she was one yr plus.

  2. My first son start talking when he was 2 yr plus.

My youngest son know how to call daddy, horse, carrot, water, fire, trucks etc.

Late talking is normal in my home country (Malaysia) only in US people make it as a big prob.

Re: Son not talking at 2 yr

ain, there is a HUGE difference between "making a huge problem" out of delayed speech and addressing it as early as possible!! I cant imagine how far behind my eldest son would be if we hadnt gotten speech therapy in place at 19 months. At age 9, he is still delayed but making great progress. If we had ignored it in the hope that it would just get better on its own, I cant begin to imagine how far behind he'd be.

And youngest son!! My goodness! After less than a year of pretty intensive therapy, he went from diagnostically autistic and severely speech delayed to "age appropriate".

If these services are available at no cost, there is no reason to just sit back and hope for the best. Speech therapy isnt harmful in any way!! So whenit comes to my kids, I think "better safe than sorry".

Mashallah your story turned out fine. But I think you'd be crying rivers of regretful tears if it had turned out that your child had apraxia, that the speech center of his brain had already formed and he would therefore be permanently speech/language deficient due to lack of appropriate interventions!!

Yup...sometimes its actually OK to make a mountain out of a molehill.

Re: Son not talking at 2 yr

I am riting on behlaf of saami as she is now in pk. I think she will not get time to rite in comin days.
Thanks for the input of u ppl which helped us making quick decision to move to pk. I m still here in KSA how ever will visit time n again to pk.

Our daughter has to pay some price as she has to get adjusted in new school with new friends .

Hope n pray that INSHA-ALLAH rayyan get quickly recovered so we can live together again.
Pl. keep us in your prayers...

Re: Son not talking at 2 yr

Will be sure to keep you in thoughts and prayers!!

Re: Son not talking at 2 yr

Today neurologist in pk observed Rayyan n he is also of the opinion that it is not the case of autism. As for the ABR test report ( test done in KSA ) he told that there is moderate hearing problem ??

Since we are not confidant about the test performed in KSA so now we want to get it repeated.
By end of this week ABR will be repeated and the analysis regarding autism will be done by panel of doctors.

Next friday ( 16th april , ABR and panel analysis will be discussed with us. I will try to join Saami by then
We hope and pray that things will be better for Rayyan.

Re: Son not talking at 2 yr

I hope and pray that you get some good info next Friday Moonstar!!

If they know what they're doing, they'll have an Occupational Therapist, a Speech/Language Patholgist and a child psychologist screen him and participate in the panel.

The thing with those ABR tests is that in cases of developmental delay, sensory processing disorders and autism spectrum disorders it is very difficult to tell whether there is an actual hearing problem or if its a problem between the brain and the ear (ie., they can hear the sound but the brain doesnt process it so it is ignored) so the test can be unreliable in the presence of other disorders.

Anyway, no matter what the tests show, the thing would be to get at least some speech therapy in place. He will get much benefit once this starts! If its a simple hearing problem, you'll see him attain speech at an amazing pace in a very short time. If its some other disorder, he may additionally benefit from OT and again, you will see dramatic and rapid improvements. Inshallah!

Wishing you all the very best and keeping you in prayers.

Re: Son not talking at 2 yr

Hi Mama

Thank you very much for your input, appreciate it. So today I took my boy to see the specialist at harbor regional center (Los Angeles). I told them the reason I bring him for this test is because of you. Your reply make me think more abt this late talking.

Before they start the test I mention to them that we spoke three languages at home. Bahasa, English and Cantonese. I think my son got confuse with three languages. My BIL also teach her daughter three language and she start talking (complete sentences at the age of 4). I told them I'm not worry abt my son speech delay. At this time, he went to music and dance class two times a week. Soccer class once a weeks. Soon (this week) he going to start his preschool.

They run a few test. Most of the test seems too easy for my boy. Shapes, walk on the straight line, pictures/photo albums etc. When they called his name he will look at them. When they asked him to wave, he wave. He also say few words in front of them. The test took abt one hour. That make my son get bored. He wanted to play with the toys but the specialist want him to do something else. Hihihihi.

Anyway, they said they will call me in two weeks time.

I'm so happy that my boy past the test -- now I can have a good sleep at night :)

Re: Son not talking at 2 yr

ain, thats wonderful happy news!! Whenever there are multiple languages involved, speech tends to come later but at a much more rapid rate. AND...a very young multi-lungual child tends to have a gift for languages later on because those specific brain pathways are on fire!

GOOD for you to have this evaluation done!! I would bet that you will get the results, be very proud of your little one and rest easy Mashallah!

Its always better to be safe than sorry yeah?
