AOA ,
My son is 2 yrs and still not talking . Some months back he was saying mama and baba now he is not saying them as well. He do babbling often ..
We checked with ENT n he told that maybe he has some hearing problem…
He can hear TV clearly also if u ask him to take something he will respond but if we call his name 100 times he does not response.
We also checked with a child specialist n he told that maybe he has some psychological problem so he is involved in his own world n not interested in other things at all so his brain ignores all . He is deeply involved with baby TV channel and watches hours and hours . Even he don’t eat at all unless baby TV is ON. Also we get relaxed as he is busy with TV so attention is given to his sister ( 4 yr )
Now what we have planned is
No more continue TV watching
We will try to talk to him a lot
Looking for daycare centre
Get hearing test done
Plan accordingly as we get feedback from the test
Any one has some suggestion / guidance / similar story etc.
Saami, it would be a good idea to have him checked out by a pediatric neurodevelopmental specialist. They can help figure out the cause of the delay and whether hemay be on the autism spectrum and then guide you in finding the proper therapists or preschools for him.
I dont know how things work where you are but in USA there is a program called Early Intervention that provides all kinds of therapy to delayed kids under the age of 5. The specialist would know about such programs in your area.
My daughter was also not talking at 2. Also she was late in walking. few months after 2, i took her for hearing test. she was fine there. what I learnt was that there are certain frequencies that the child may not hear and as a result speech is impeded. So although he can hear tv and when you are talking to him, it does not clear him of hearing difficulties.
There was a teacher who happened to be observing children at my daughters day care and she spoke to me about how she noticed certain things in my daughter...ie speech, social inactivity, chewing problems, walking/running difficulties, climbing, holding pen etc...Now all these were really minor, but put altogether, she recommended we see a specialist just to rule out anything. My daughter probably has some problem related to the nerve endings in her co-ordination centre. Only after MRI a definite "label" can be given but for now its pointing towards either a condition known as dysparxia or mild cerebral palsy. I am ever grateful to the lady who observed her and gave us appropriate direction. My daughter has been going for Occ. Therapy since last 18 months...and there is a remarkable improvement.
So my advice is to that in case there is anything wrong (god forbid), the best thing you can do is to start early intervention.
All the best...I pray your little boy will be well.
PS Now Alhamdullilah you cannot stop my daughter from chattering away!!!
thanks for ur view point ppl.
With our son Alhamdo lillah there is no problem like walking , climbing ( he tries to climb what ever he finds ) even his pencil grip is fine compare to my daughter at that age , so our home is full of his artistic work...
I feel that we have toltaaly ignored him so now he has find his own interests ...
Lets see what the hearing test ends up.
Saami, I am thinking Autism not only coz he isn't talking but coz he won't responsd if you keep on calling his name... on the other hand if you ask him to do something, he can carry that out right? That means he can hear!
Chances are, he probably is perfectly alright, just a late talker but to be on the safe side you should get him evaluated.
where are you based at? Are you in Pakistan... if yes, there's all the more reason to take it more seriously because over here we have nothing like early intervention. If you are in Pak, PM me, I'll give you more info on where to get help.
I understand about hearing and frequencies. But if he hears you when he wants something but does not respond to his name, this is not likely an issue with hearing.
Losing previous language skills around 18 to 19 months is an indicator of autism as is "being in their own world". Early intervention is key here. My youngest son was diagnosed as being on the autism spectrum at 19 months, we got early intervention in place and he is now a typical kindergartener. Autism is not the dire diagnosis that it used to be.
CB, in general that is great advice. But when you're dealing with autism spectrum disorders, the TV can turn out to be a useful tool. For my eldest, its the only thing that worked in getting him to eat enough to survive. Kids on the spectrum have a very different agenda, a very different way of seeing and experiencing the world. They have needs that to a "typical" person, may seem odd.
But don't you think watching TV for hours can be harmful... how about letting him sit in front of the TV while giving him meals and keeping in involved in other activities at other times?
Notice she says 'hours and hours' ???
I am not an expert on Autism but I think hours and hours of TV isn't good in general.
I would be a good idea to get him checked out with a neuro consult. My daughter had some of the same symptoms (loss of speech, in her own world, not responding to someone calling her name). Her hearing test was fine and was eventually diagnosed with ASD.
The earlier the you start with the therapy the better it is.
Cut the T.V -
Try to engage him in pretend playing even with his 4 year old sister
Don't give him anything - unless he asks for it with either motion or words.
Thanks ppl. for your advise .
We havnt got the hearing test done. We have appointment with doc on wednesday. Now we are checking him more , yesterday took him to a playland where there were too much noise and he was crying too much unless we took him out of that place ... is this also ASD symptom
is there real cure for autism .
I don't know if that is a sign or not, but I think that is normal for a two years old.. most of the playlands here are so noisy, even I, being an adult want out of there. He's only two, too much noise can easily over-whelm a child that age.

Very interesting Mama
Sami, I am wandering, did anything happen to your son where he got really scared? Did he witness anything, like other people fighting or it could have been a simple thing like the animals scaring him at the Rainforest Cafe, for example? Cause from my understanding, fear can trigger autism and make a child revert back to baby talk. Then again, it could have been triggered by a neurological issue. I just think it could be related to fear due to the Dr. saying it is a psychological issue.
Just a thought. Please explore all your options, in terms of getting him every test available.
Sami, Mehnaz is right. He could have had fear or anxiety for a reason other than autism. But you're right also - kids on the autism spectrum experience "sensory overload" in situations where there is noise or many people.
I recently watched the movie "Temple G*****n" - she is a famous autistic and the movie is about her life and experience being autistic. She explained that when are a number of people asking her questions, it feels to her like a high-speed train is coming at her and she's standing on the tracks. Thats the best description of sensory overload I've ever heard.
Anyway...no one here can say whether your boy is on the spectrum or not. The doc will be able to figure this out with you and get proper therapists in place. THis can make all the difference. My youngest doesnt even fit the diagnostic criteria for autism anymore and seems pretty much like a typical 6 year old. He does a little hand-flapping and still prefers to play alone. He has some different ways of thinking and speaking (ie., he sometimes calls other people "it" instead of he or she) but he came out of that shell and seems just fine. Like I said, autism isnt the dire diagnosis that it used to be.
from waht sami is saying.. i dont think anything serious is wrong with him.. she answered her own question.. they just didnt give him any time and so he got invovled in his own little world...
u talk to a baby when ure doing things with it.. i have always talked to my now 10 month old baby.. we are changing ure diaper now.. we are taking a bath now..w hat is this..w aht is taht.. who is this... say baba.. say mama.. that kinda stuff...
sami its really easy to ignore a child if they are of the kind to self entertain especially wne u have more kids to take care of.. so u are on teh right track ... give him ure time and talk to him... show him what things are called .... exaggerate when talking to him...

how old is your daughter now? My son is 2 years and not talking yet but we have had speech therapy for 6 months now and recently we were told by developmental pediatriciron that she strongly thinks its dyspraxia. He uses words then drops them when picking new words.... now a days he does have few words... he is also starting physical therapy, he is fine in walking running and all, but we were told that he uses right side ofh is body more than left side, there is a balance thing which i would have never known if i hadnt had the evaluation.
But i was interested in knowing how long did it take for your daughter to talk?
