my mom said when u go to buy something from some high end shop, be it cloth, watches, gold wear ur best so if u dont like something the sales people dont think u cant afford it and are just wasting their time. also she said if we do wear our best they treat u differently, well i wanted to find out if this was true so…
one day i went dressed as a poor girl. my dirtiest abaya, no watch, no nothing, no makeup, broken eye glasses etc etc and i went into chanel boutique to see the J12. i was standing there and i tried to call the guy to show me the watch and he wouldnt listen, he was “busy” with other potential customers, finally after like some ages had passed he came and with a moody face said “can i help you?”
i said in my fake arabic accent " i want to see the J12"
and u know what he said “this is a 25,000 watch i am sure u are not going to be able afford it, carrefour has cheap watches u can go there”
i was so angered and i forgot about my disguise and i said in my british accent
“u think i cannot afford this? i can afford many like this!!! NOW SHOW ME”
the guy got alarmed and quickly showed me the watch and i said i will come back next week and buy it from him…
after two weeks i dressed in my best abaya with swarovski crystals etc etc my armani glasses, my harrods purse and all that and went back into chanel. there was some other saleswoman and i thanked god. i wanted this experiment to work. as soon as i went upto the watch display she came over and she smiled and asked me what nationality i am, i was wondering why does she want to know that so i said, instead of british, pakistani to see if i get treated any different because of my nationality but surprisingly she smiled and said “how can i help u madam” so i said i want to see the black J12 and she said why dont u go sit on the sofa and i will bring it for u. so i sat on the sofa and saw it and everything while she got me a glass of cocktail juice and then i said i dont like it thankyou to see what happens. she just smiled and said thank you for visiting our boutique. i was like wow! so i went to Asprey for something and came back into chanel and i said to her “you know what! just give me the watch! i am here to buy”
so appearance does matter! and if u have money they dont care what nationality u are from u have to prove by ur appearance that u are a potential customer and are not wasting their time!
