A question:
Would you be okay marrying a person who is diabetic? If yes, then why? If no, then why not?

Re: Someone who is diabetic...
the ONLY thing that you have to worry is that diabetes is passed on sometimes to children and sometimes to the following generations. life style makes a big difference in the onset of diabetes.
my grandfather had diabetes and grandmother did NOT...he had 7 children and 3 had diabetes. my dad and mom did NOT have diabetes..but we are 7 siblings and 4 of us have...one sibling passed away recently so we are 50-50 split now.
my diabetes is alHamdolillah well managed. so, having diabetes is NOT end of the world but managing it is the key to live a long, healthy and normal life. :)

In an arranged situation I wouldn't..
We have diabetes in our family I don't have it (yet) but many in my family do.. There's still a chance my future kids might end up with it but I'd like to minimise the risk by not marrying someone who has it in their family like me.. Obviously it's a life-long condition and from what I see around me it often gets worse cos many who have it aren't as careful as they should be and then they end up with other associated problems like high BP etc..
(I'd be ok with certain other illnesses if I was having an arranged marriage but not diabetes.. I know it's manageable but the majority of ppl I know who have it don't control it properly)

Nice question, usually by knowing other person disease people get this thought that there is no telling of other person life, who knows if he/she will live long or might not live a care free life. I find all these misconcepts of people. No one can say if u marry a healthy person he/she will stay healthy and will live long term, what if that healthy person after marriage gets big health issues, then..., and knowing other person has some disease is a plus point rahter than not knowing or them hiding it, cause u know from what to keep that person away and what wayse u can take care of him/her. I know i wont hesitate if the person is nice, religious and respectable.
My brother-in-law has one kidney, he gave one kidney to his when he was 16, cuase his father both kidnies failed, and after that till age 32 his family was not able to find some one to marry him. cause everyone knew that the guy has one kidney. When we came to know about this we dint hesitate in fact it really helped us to take a decision that he is the right guy for my sister, who cared for his father this much and his good deed proved his good nature, what else we need. Even my elder sister happily married him and now they have one cute little daughter and living a very happy life, she does extra care for him knowing he has one kidney but MashaAllah they both are really happy with their relation. So i think we should not look down on that person knowing what defect he/she has. We should have faith in Allah more than in medical science.

Re: Someone who is diabetic...
I think diabetics is a very common disease and one can manage it quite well if he or she knows, how to cope with it,wasim akram the great cricket legend is diabetic...Wht if someone u marry gets diabetic after marriage?
Re: Someone who is diabetic...
^By then you would have a built up a bond tho, wouldn't you..
Those who are saying it's no big deal + can be controlled easily do your parents not have high BP, high cholesterol and other associated problems as well?? In theory it CAN be controlled but in practise how many desis do actually keep it under control? (and I say 'desis' specifically because a lot of them who are diabetic don't seem to alter their diet or take exercise seriously)..
(Btw a girl or guy who already had type 2 diabetes at the time they get married will likely have serious health issues.. it is** very uncommon to get it that early** unless they're extremely overweight or something - even if there's a family history of diabetes)
Re: Someone who is diabetic...
as i mentioned in my previous post, a perspective rishta can not be verified to be FREE of this condition because the person may NOT have diabetes but he/she is fully capable of passing it one to his off-springs simply because he had someone else with the disease in his prior generation/generations...Diabetes can skip a generation to manifest itself.
Re: Someone who is diabetic...
Yes there are problem associated with the diabetics, but Wht if ppl start to avoid ppl with health problems which are not lifethreatening,Wht if ppl start to demand a full medical checkup of gal or boy for assurance that theyr healthy??? I think human should not take a charge of each n every thing in their hands cause they can't....things should be done on Allah's will,I remember one of my relative used to say that I don wanna hv baho with glasses !i mean Wht if she had glasses after marriage....I'm not saying that one should marry a reason having serious medical problems,,
Re: Someone who is diabetic...
Diabetes is a disease which can be controlled by the person affected. It is life long, but if managed properly can lead to a very normal life style. I have diabetes type2 and have been diabetic for 15 years. No one in my family has diabetes. My diabetes is well controlled and I control it with diet and medication. it is up to you how you treat this illness, it can be fatal if you don't take proper care of your diet and lifestyle.

He’s married too. Does that stop 'em from lining up? ![]()
Re: Someone who is diabetic...
I have a bit of a different perspective as a child. There is no known history of*T1*in my family anywhere. And ma bro got it at age 2 and he is 8 now. The truth is that it never stopped him from doing anything. Yes, he's had some complications, but even that has never stopped him from living his life. I know it is scary, but I think you need to think more about what you have to offer- your love, experience, etc. Diabetes is a very complex issue. I read somewhere recently that there may be as many as 18 genes involved in getting*T1. And then you have to encounter just the right virus too. Don't think so much about possible statistics, and think about the joy in your lives. You take what happens and you deal with it as a family. But during whatever happens, you can have fantastic lives. Allhamdulilah ma bro has and continue to do so.
Re: Someone who is diabetic...
Its pretty naive to say that all desis can't control their diabetes. I know so many people with this disease who are fitter and in better shape then someone who doesn't have diabetes because they took their condition seriously and did something about it. Its the attittude they had towards life that changed their lifestyle. Now someone who doesn't have diabetes can be pretty unfit and unhealthy because of their careless attitude towards life. Overall I think in marrying someone what's important is how their attitude is and their approach to cope with ups and downs in life. My husband's family has all kind of diseases that you can imagine.. heartattack in 30s is pretty common in his family, plus diabetes, arthritis and everything else you can imagine. So I shouldn't have married him huh??

You sure you are Desi uncle? as per Deeba, if you were, you would be dead by now by not being able to control it. Since Desi DNA doesn't allow anyone to actually control things.

The part I have bolded is what I wish everyone realized. I know sometimes its really hard because when you think of your life partner you want your SO to be perfect in every aspect. The way he/she looks, speaks, etc. I know especially as girls its really hard when rishtas come our way and they are not exactly what we had in mind. And that is not to say in a superficial way or anything...but eventually you come to terms with the fact the way the person acts towards you and how he she/ is as a human being in general matters way more. I know my sister had the same problem when she married my brother in law who has a lisp. But thank Allah she eventually realized this herself and is so happily married now.
sorry off topic but I just liked what you said.
