Some more Pregnancy questions ..

Somebody help me ! I am so confused with everything I read on internet!

So everyone says Pregnancy is considered full termed at 38 weeks right? Some said baby’s development gets completed by 38 weeks. So why does the doctor give 40 weeks as the Expected Due Date?

If the baby doesnt decide to come out at 38 weeks, do the doctors wait for the woman to complete 40 weeks before they consider inducing labor?

Also midwife takes belly measurements at every visit. There are three lines marked on the page that she grades me on , Middle line shows average growth of a woman. Lower line shows when tummy aint growing as much as it should. The top line shows the tummy is growing more then it should be growing !

So mine comes at slighly lower then the upper line .. Midwife thinks its gonna be a tall baby perhaps thats why the tummy is big .. but i want to know the experience of those of you who have gone through this , should i get worried that the baby is getting too big ? what if they say in the end its gonna be Csec baby and not normal delivery  whats this belly measurement ,I dont think I am still very clear about what exactly the belly measurement reads …

Yeah , just these wierd questions for now .. will think up some more in a bit , my brains over working these days :hinna:

Re: Some more Pregnancy questions ..

Baby can come out any time after 36 weeks I delivered at 38 week n yes docs wait till 40 weeks.

n don’t worry about belly thing if there is something god forbid something serious doc will tell you, mine also very healthy n I was prepared for both normal n c section but in the end when her big head got stuck, doc used vacuum n she was delivered :smack:

Some more Pregnancy questions ..

Docs won’t induce u until u hit 42 weeks here. So if your over due then u gotta wait

Bout the lines I can’t remember lol

Re: Some more Pregnancy questions ..

Hmmm .. you know whats worrying me is that 36-37 weeks fall right at Christmas time here , that means public holidays and medical staff on leave , so there will be a shortage of staff as well ..

I am hoping and praying that baby comes after the new year so that everyone is back from holidays and enough staff available at the hospital.

So , what are the chances of delivering after 36 weeks and before the 40th week?

Re: Some more Pregnancy questions ..

I had a tall baby but didn’t show as much at all (maybe because i’m also tall). Alhumdulillah i had a very smooth delivery.

And can i make a suggestion (just something that worked for me when i was a first time Mum)… stop thinking about it, about all of it. IA everything will go well for you and the baby, if naturally then great, if c-section… then i guess you’ll just deal with it WHEN you have to deal with it… ppl would often ask me “aren’t you afraid of childbirth, etc etc” my answer has always been that “i choose not to think about it, i’ll put up with the pain when i experience it, no point it pondering how much its all gonna hurt”

Re: Some more Pregnancy questions ..

oh and pray that the baby comes whenever its best for it (and you) to come, even on Christmas

Re: Some more Pregnancy questions ..

Most babies come out after 38 weeks…36 weeks is rare I think. I delivered at 39, 40 and 41 weeks.

There’s always staff on call available so worry naat! :@:

Re: Some more Pregnancy questions ..

i have heard first babies always come late or full term mostly after 38 weeks, i am just saying baby is ready to be delivered sfter 36 weeks.

Re: Some more Pregnancy questions ..

Ohh thanks guys ..

Pink, you are right, absolutely right, just that I am preparing my self, coz thats how my mind works , the more I have read and feel prepared for it, the more at peace and somwhat in control, I feel with the whole thing …

Hareem, last year round about Christmas and new year time, I had two friends one, delivered in merseyside, and the other one in Manchester and both had said that they were constantly being told that there is a staff shortage ! I tell you NHS is no longer a happy place to be in !

So its 38 weeks after which it can come out anytime .. Do they keep a close eye on the baby after this time or do they just let you be at home for the next two weeks without checking what is going on with the baby? :konfused: Like what if the baby over develops during those two weeks?

Re: Some more Pregnancy questions ..

Oh ok , by full term you mean 38 weeks? right?

Re: Some more Pregnancy questions ..

no 40 weeks are full term n sometimes doc wait uptill 42 weeks

Re: Some more Pregnancy questions ..

lolz CB don’t worry after 30 week I had check up every 2 weeks till baby came, doc said she will wait till 40 weeks else will induce me, so if baby didn’t came till 40 week they will schedule your delivery n will induce you don’t worry

Re: Some more Pregnancy questions ..

37 weeks is considered full term (I’m in the US).
My tummy was big when I was expecting my daughter too. Doctor told me baby was big. When she was born (on the day I turned 37weeks preggers) she was just 6lbs and skinny!

Re: Some more Pregnancy questions ..

because there is extra water weight also, here in UAE 40 weeks is full term, my doc also said its a big baby se was almost 8 pounds mashahallah

PS: i delivered at 38 weeks and 2 days

Re: Some more Pregnancy questions ..

Here 37weeks is full term n then you just have to wait for baby till 41-42 weeks, babies born before 37 weeks r considered premature, while after 37 weeks they r just gaining weight …no other development…n i had my last checkup at 39 weeks, delivered at 39 weeks 5days…

Re: Some more Pregnancy questions ..

don’t worry if your measuring bigger than average- so long as the baby is healthy, its all good. i was always bigger from the get go and so my doctor was prepared for it- towards the end, i went for an ultrasound weekly to monitor the baby’s growth and potential size. in the end, he was bang on target and was born at almost the end of week 39 at 9.5lbs masha’Allah. just focus on relaxing and trying to enjoy your last few weeks before life changes forever insha’Allah and in such a good way Alhamdulillah!

Re: Some more Pregnancy questions ..

Oh CB you are thinking too much.. too much lady. You are going to go nuts if all you do is think about your pregnancy and baby. Focus on the good stuff.

Regarding your question. 37 is considered full term in the US. I had mine at 38 weeks. Yes doctors wait till at least 40 weeks. Your pregnancy is supposed to be that long. My belly was never measured. Do they even do that in the US?? Ultrasounds, heart beats etc was done to look at progress. I strongly suggest you stop worrying about every little thing. I don’t know how far you are but if your midwife/obgyn says its all good, trust them. Unless there is something wrong, you have no reason to worry. Baby is going to come out when he/she is cooked.

Re: Some more Pregnancy questions ..

^same here! (it was for akmoti)

baby is considered full term at 37 weeks.. I went into premature labor at 32 weeks and the hospital that I was registered at was this close to transporting me to another hospital because they didnt have the NICU for babies born before 35 weeks…it was not fun at all.. alhamdulillah the contractions plus gallbladder pain went away after they gave me some medication to stop contractions(the gallstones were triggering contractions)! I went onto holding the baby in until 39 weeks and 5 days but I remember they were ready to take the baby out if I had the gallstone attack anytime after 37 weeks because they considered the baby ready for outside world!

The hospital that I was going to doesnt indue beofre 41 weeks and sometimes they let you go on to even 42 weeks! but those last few days they have you come in almost everday for the nonstress test to monitor the baby!

Re: Some more Pregnancy questions ..

ok I just read your whole thing about belly measurement.. it means nothing unless it’s way off and they determine that (god fobid) baby isnt growing or anything like trhat.. for that, they will send you in for ultrasound right away!

I was measuring 38 weeks at 39 and the midwife estimated the baby to be 6 pounds at 39 weeks..I remember calling chipsy and being a lil upset but she reassured me that it was nothing to be concerned about.. lo n behold, 5 days later baby was born at 7 pounds, 6 ounces.. I am petite so for me that was a big baby and in fact even my ob said, he didnt expect him to be of that much weight!

and let me say this… prepare yourself for c section, just in case! I thought there was no way I will have a c section.. I was walking everday, i was eating healthy, baby wasnt breach, I was past the full term so why would I end up with c section.. I was planning a trip to pakistan after 6 weeks because after all I would have a normal delivery and not c section..After 30 hours of labor at home, as soon as we got to the hospital, my husband came to me and said, if they ask for c section, we will say yes! you should have seen my face.. I wanted to punch him.. you dont say that to a woman who is 6 cm dilated naturally.. I was sooo proud of myself! I ended up c section after full dilation and breaking the water trying to get the baby out.. did I even imagine that in my dreams? no! But apparently my husband had thought about it all and was preparing me during my last few moments in case i throw a tantrum at the end.

I do wish that I had read up on c section and recovery.. i wish i had prepared myself for that mentally! it can happen and it is not the end of the world.. at the end, you will have your baby in your arms and you wont care about anything else!trust me on that! I plan to schedule my second c section just so I am prepared for it!!

Re: Some more Pregnancy questions ..

the belly thing means jack. midwives were wrong the first time. midget was a healthy baby but not the hulk they were saying i was bout to give birth to. when my water bag burst.. it was more water than baby weight.

dont bother with it… i used to phase out when they would give me the measurements.. i only cared if they told me something was off which was a few times with midget. otherwise… its all blah blah blah.

as for full term etc… 37 is full term.. meaning baby wont be termed premature if its born at that time.. its done cooking.

anythign over that is well done by 40 weeks and overcooked by 42 weeks. which most babies are interested in doing.. especially first time around. docs go upto 42 weeks cuz .. hey.. we are all human.. miscalculations are a fact.
