Some advice on hair straighteners

A colleague of my husband recently requested (via my husband) that I help select a hair straightener for his sister. Now they have no clue that the person they asked for assistance (yani me) is such a slob that she only brushes her hair when dire need calls for it. In simpler words, for me buying a hair straightner is as complex as rocket science.

So a little bit of advice would be helpful. He needn’t know I am such a slob. Please advise me on which is the best brand, what to look for in a hair straigtener, and other complexities of life.

Re: Some advice on hair straighteners

I just recently bought the CHI Turbo...its really really good!

Oo! Ok well PS said she has the chi, and believe me those are really good, most of my friends have them! I used to have one as well, for about 2 years, but somehow it died on me. I just invested in a sedu and it's amazing! I belive it's the ceramic/tourmaline (1 inch). You can get different sizes, like a 1 1/2 etc. Find out how long her hair is, mine's just to the middle of my back and the 1 inch is great.

I have REMINGTON's !!! it's good ....if u have thick hairs try to get broad one ....i didn't get that one over here but it will consume less time.

Re: Some advice on hair straighteners

  • i had a remington and it was terrible! It just made my hair poofy.

Re: Some advice on hair straighteners

I have a GHD and I believe its just as good if not better than the Chi. Whats your price range? Make sure you buy ceramic!

I have GHD and really like it
but it does fry your hair and make them dry and limp

There is no doubt about it- GHD is definetly the best hair straightener around. While slightly more expensive than other hair straighteners (I paid $320 for mine about 2 years back) it is definetly worth it. You are guaranteed poker straight hair until the next time you wash it. I have used remington before and it doesn't come close to the standard of GHD. With remington I found that my hair would only stay straight for 1-2 hrs and then it would begin to wave...and my hair is not super curly, just slightly wavy.

GHD heats up really high though so it is necessary to use a heat protection spray. But obviously if your hair is being subjected to it everyday it will start to damage. Using GHD once a week is perfectly safe, provided that heat protection and high quality shampoo/conditioner and hair treatments are used.

What is ceramic?

only this model of variations of though… the rest are rubbish.

Re: Some advice on hair straighteners

i use remington's. although i have thick hair, it works well for me. i love it.

Re: Some advice on hair straighteners

Heya...I've got a GHD and I love it. Use it most days of the week. It heats up instantly so need to wait around while its heating. Also doesn't take long and you don't have straighten the same bit of hair repeatedly. Plus it comes with a DVD with tips and different ways to use it..ie. as a curler. And there always seems to be some limited or special edition out, so I got a case with it and a benefit make-up kit freebie with it too!
Hope this helps.

Re: Some advice on hair straighteners

GHD is the way to go… they’re currently the best straightener on the market.

They come in 3 plate sizes -

Mini Styler: plates are extra slim for ladies with really short hair, or even men.

Regular Styler: suitable for all hair types/lengths.

Salon Styler: extra wide plates, suitable for afro hair or really really long hair… i have these, as i used to have really long hair, so it took less time to straighten.

Re: Some advice on hair straighteners

i'm really not taken with ghds at all. it's not a cost issue at all. i just don't like the way my hair looks after straightening with them :/

Re: Some advice on hair straighteners

GHD!!!!

Re: Some advice on hair straighteners

Stoppit, i personally do prefer blow drying, as i hate the dead-straight-oil-slicked-straightened look. But with GHDs, just don't start straightening from the root (so as to keep some volume) and rotate the barrel when you're coming down to leave a nice natural looking wave.

They do make your life a little easier :@:

My vote is for Chi, you get the same results in half price compared to GHD.

I got Chi’s 1-inch ceramic straightener from Costco for only 70 bucks (after my sis-in-law qabzofiled my GHD lol). The results are awesome, it heats up fast (within 2-5 seconds) just like GHD and you can do the whole flip and wave/curl thingy that GHD’s video shows you to do. I use it every other day with a heat protection serum and so far my hair’s held out great. Its been over 6 months :yahoo:

I have been thinking of getting a chi or sedu, but now your post has gotten me intrigued. I wouldnt think you could get a fantastic straigthener for that cheap???

Re: Some advice on hair straighteners

GHD for sure! I bought mine about 7/8 years ago and it's still going strong even though it has been around the world with me. I kinda want it to break so i can buy one of those new Limited edition GHDs.....maybe a pink one!

Well the plates in ceramic hair straighteners are made of ceramic materials. Ceramic protects your hair because it emits like infra-red heat or something… basically it just doesn’t kill your hair and make it dry and crunchy. Its also supposed to prolong hair color. The plates are usually like yellowish but Im pretty sure they come in like pink and stuff too. I bought my GHD online for like $100.. Go to Craig’s List or Ebay or Kijiji depending on where you are. I’m sure you’ll find one for a good price. ITS TOTALLY WORTH IT. oh and GHDs come with an automatic 2 year warranty.
