Somalia Islamists declare war on Ethiopia, but maintain peace with Somali Govt

Who wants to bet that the war will soon involve Eritrea first. What will also be interesting to see is if Ethiopia’s large Somali population backs the Ethiopians or takes sides with Somalia.

Also, interesting that they say they’re at peace with the government while they fight with the govt.

Somalia’s Islamist leader today declared war on Ethiopia as fears grew that the conflict could spread across the horn of Africa.
Western diplomats fear that the heavy fighting between the Somalia Islamic Courts Council (SICC) and its Ethiopian-backed interim government could escalate into a regional war involving both Ethiopia and its rival Eritrea.

Sheikh Hassan Dahir Aweys, leader of the SICC, told Reuters today: “We are at war with Ethiopia, but not with the [Somali] government.”

He told the Associated Press: “All Somalis should take part in this struggle against Ethiopia.”
The Islamist group’s troops exchanged heavy artillery fire with the interim government’s forces for the third day running.

It is the most sustained combat so far between the rival Somali factions, struggling for control of the country, which has been in a state of anarchy since 1991.

The fighting started late on Tuesday, the deadline the SICC had given Ethiopian troops protecting the weak government to leave the country or face holy war.

Re: Somalia Islamists declare war on Ethiopia, but maintain peace with Somali Govt

The ethiopian government is backing the corrupt mafia style government in somalia. America also maintains thier financial backing of him when he has killed many people in somalia. The people of somalia do not want him in power and are pleased with the somalian mujahid Masha'ALLAH, for clearing his troops out thier towns. I think people should stop interfering with thier matters, especially if they ignore the corrupt people who kill innocent civillians. May ALLAH swt protect the muslim ummah and insure we annihilate our enemies both foreign and within, Ameen... :)

Somalia Islamic Courts Council declares Jihad, asks foreign Muslims to travel to Somalia to join the fight, says they want “anyone who can help remove the enemy to come in”.

MOGADISHU, Dec 23 (Reuters) - A Somali Islamist defence chief appealed to foreign Muslim fighters for the first time on Saturday to join his movement’s “holy war” against Ethiopia.

“We’re saying our country is open to Muslims worldwide. Let them fight in Somalia and wage jihad, and God willing, attack Addis Ababa,” said defence chief Yusuf Mohamed Siad, known as Inda’ade, a hardliner who has given inflammatory remarks in the past.

“We want anyone who can help remove the enemy to come in,” he told a news conference in the Islamist stronghold Mogadishu.

Ethiopian officials were not immediately available for comment.

The United States has accused the Islamists of drawing support from al Qaeda but they have denied it.

Inda’ade was speaking after four days of clashes between Islamist forces and pro-government troops that has killed dozens and wounded hundreds.

The most sustained combat in Somalia started late on Tuesday, the deadline Somalia Islamic Courts Council (SICC) had given Ethiopian troops protecting the government to leave the country or face war

Re: Somalia Islamists declare war on Ethiopia, but maintain peace with Somali Govt

If Pakistanis travel to Somalia to fight this "jihad", will th Somalis accept them now or kill them like before?

Re: Somalia Islamists declare war on Ethiopia, but maintain peace with Somali Govt

It's jihad baby, as long as you come to kill the kufar, it's all good.

Re: Somalia Islamists declare war on Ethiopia, but maintain peace with Somali Govt

what are you two on about? the only reason there was trouble before was because we were stupid enough to be helping the americans. as for the holy war, whats wrong with that? dont these people deserve to get rid of the foreign idiots messing around with thier country?

Re: Somalia Islamists declare war on Ethiopia, but maintain peace with Somali Govt

Excuse me? Muslims ar enot entitled to self-defence? Typical american racist attitude. Yes, only the good ol boys are allowed to fight.

Ethiopia is proping up an unpopular government in Somalia, directly intervening in the state of affairs in that country. The Islamic courts are actually backed by business are remain popular Until that state of affairs changes, they have every right to declare war on behalf of the people...and invite whomever they want to help.

You myopic views on the matter only justify Muslm distrut of Kafirs. Go figure. But thta's right...they're Muslim...so they must be wrong...

Re: Somalia Islamists declare war on Ethiopia, but maintain peace with Somali Govt

Its stupid to be joining a UN peacekeeping effort to provide food for people? Tell that to the thousands of Pakistani troops who have worn blue helmets.

Re: Somalia Islamists declare war on Ethiopia, but maintain peace with Somali Govt

The group that killed the Pakistanis, the United Somali Congress of Farrah Aideed, is part of the Ethiopian-backed Transitional Government that the Islamic Courts Union is fighting against.

The jihad is thus against the faction that killed the Pakistanis before. So now will you answer your own question?

If these guys are fighting the guys who killed Pakistanis before, why would they kill Pakistanis who come to help them kill the guys who killed the Pakistanis?

Re: Somalia Islamists declare war on Ethiopia, but maintain peace with Somali Govt

Didn't Al Qaeda also claim credit for killing the Americans and Pakistanis in Somalia? But even if we ignore that, from what I remember reading about the incidents, it was a popular resistance against all foreigners in Somalia, including Pakistanis, so what is to say that these same Somalis are now under the Islamic Union?

Did you not follow what happened in Afghanistan when Pakistanis went to help fight the "jihad"? They were killed by the thousands by Afghans. So I suggest we stop misleading people on this so-called "jihad" against fellow Muslims (United Somali Congress is Muslim, Ethiopia is 50% Muslim).

Re: Somalia Islamists declare war on Ethiopia, but maintain peace with Somali Govt

The myopic view on this matter is that any fight involving Muslims is supposed to be some sort of Allah-sanctioned jihad and that Muslims around the globe should join the fight.

Re: Somalia Islamists declare war on Ethiopia, but maintain peace with Somali Govt

Just like its a war against terrorism, as long as you kill Muslims, it's all good.

Re: Somalia Islamists declare war on Ethiopia, but maintain peace with Somali Govt

Ethiopia is 33% Muslim, most of its Muslim population comes from areas Ethiopia conquered in the late 1800s, and there have been separatist insurgencies ever since.

In fact, Britain, always the benevolent colonial power, tried to use its occupation of Ethiopia after liberating it from Italy in WW2 to partition Ethiopia so that its Muslim population joined a Muslim country.

Unfortunately, Ethiopia was able to persuade Britain not to partition the country and so retained its occupation of Muslim lands.

Re: Somalia Islamists declare war on Ethiopia, but maintain peace with Somali Govt

...and as we all know, Muslims never have just cause. I wish you had the courage to complete your thoughts.

There's nothing, not one thing, wrong with the concept of a just war in the guise of a jihad...yes, I know...only democracy should be spread by the sword...well, not all of us are willing to play by your double standards.

Re: Somalia Islamists declare war on Ethiopia, but maintain peace with Somali Govt

And from the beginning you haven't.

Since we are talking about double standards, I am assuming that any time a group of Christians fight a war to institute Christian rule, they are legitmate to claim it is a Holy War and to call Christians from around the globe to fight against the infidels.

Re: Somalia Islamists declare war on Ethiopia, but maintain peace with Somali Govt

Ethiopia declares war too.

BAIDOA, Somalia (Reuters) - Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi said on Sunday he was waging war against Somalia’s Islamists to protect his country’s sovereignty, intensifying a conflict that threatens to engulf the Horn of Africa.

It was Ethiopia’s first public admission of military involvement in Somalia, where for the first time it sent warplanes on Sunday to pound the Islamist fighters now encircling the weak interim government.

Ethiopian officials have said the Somalia Islamic Courts Council (SICC), which now controls most of Somalia except for the government-held town of Baidoa, is a terrorist group backed by Ethiopia’s enemy, Eritrea.

“Ethiopian defence forces were forced to enter into war to the protect the sovereignty of the nation and to blunt repeated attacks by Islamic courts terrorists and anti-Ethiopian elements they are supporting,” Meles said in a televised address.

“Our defence forces will leave as soon as they end their mission.”

Re: Somalia Islamists declare war on Ethiopia, but maintain peace with Somali Govt

^
Sure. Of course, we all know the rehtoric is that of freedom and democracy (as the church has been made subserviant to those idoleogies). I would argue that this is in full force, and that the concept of good-evil is very firmly entreched in the Western political discourse.

Now, if any Muslim state interferes in a "Christian" land, and I only quote to placate the secularists, then by all means declare your holy war.

Re: Somalia Islamists declare war on Ethiopia, but maintain peace with Somali Govt

Ethiopian air strikes on Somalia appear to be strengthening support for the Islamists.

http://www.somalinet.com/news/world/Somalia/6122

Thousands of angry people have on Sunday rallied in Somalia capital Mogadishu in protest of the Ethiopian air strikes in parts of Somalia killing civilians.

The people took the streets of Mogadishu forcing all business centers to close down and go for the front against the Ethiopian troops who are fighting with the Islamists in number of fronts in Bay, Hiran and Mudug regions.

Here in Mogadishu, people were very tense and angered by the Ethiopian air strikes on Somalia as most of the local FM radios were airing patriotic songs stirring up the people to die for the defense of the territory against what they called ‘the Ethiopian occupiers’.

The anti Ethiopian rallies have also taken place in Lower Juba and Hiran region in Somalia where the Somalis vowed to go against the Ethiopian invaders.

In Kismayo, the southern port city of Somalia and capital of Lower Juba region, hundreds of pro-Islamist demonstrators gathered at the main public square in the town chanting ant Ethiopia slogans.

In Beledwein, the provincial capital of Hiran in central of Somalia, hundreds of protestors demonstrated their anger over the Ethiopian air strikes on the town vowing to join the war with Ethiopian troops.

Hundreds of volunteers are now registering to join the Islamist declared Jihad on Ethiopia as fighting intensifies more heavily.

The rallies came hours after around eight war planes belonged to Ethiopian air forces raided inside Beleweine and its residential areas targeting Islamist positions to weaken their power and people began fleeing to escape the shelling.

Heavy armed Ethiopian troops backed by war planes and tanks cut off the main Kala-Bayrka road linking Beledwein to central region of Mudug which is a key to Islamic Courts Union fighters.

Re: Somalia Islamists declare war on Ethiopia, but maintain peace with Somali Govt

U.S. proxy shows strength, Islamic fighters quit. Quite telling.

MOGADISHU, Somalia - Islamic fighters attempting to wrest power from Somalia's internationally recognized government retreated from the main front line early Tuesday, witnesses said, a day after Ethiopian fighter jets bombed the country's two main international airports.

Troops loyal to the Council of Islamic Courts withdrew more than 30 miles to the southeast from Daynuney, a town just south of Baidoa, the government headquarters.
The Islamic forces also abandoned their main stronghold in Bur Haqaba and were forming convoys headed toward the capital, Mogadishu, residents in villages along the road told The Associated Press by telephone.
"We woke up from our sleep this morning and the town was empty of troops, not a single Islamic fighter," Ibrahim Mohamed Aden, a resident of Bur Haqaba said.
On the northern front, government and Ethiopian troops entered the town of Bulo Barde, where just two weeks ago an Islamic cleric said anyone who did not pray five times a day would be executed.
"We have withdrawn as part of our military strategy," said Sheik Mohamoud Ibrahim Suley, an official with the Islamic council in Mogadishu.
On Monday, Russian-made jets swept low over the capital at midmorning, dropping two bombs on Mogadishu International Airport, part of a major escalation in the week-old fighting. The leader of the Islamic militia, Sheik Hassan Dahir Aweys, flew into the airport shortly after the attack; it was not clear if he was an intended target.
Air strikes also hit Baledogle Airport outside Mogadishu.
"We heard the sound of the jets and then they pounded," said Abdi Mudey, a soldier with the Council of Islamic Courts, which has seized the capital and much of southern Somalia since June.
Somalia has not had an effective government since warlords overthrew longtime dictator Mohamed Siad Barre in 1991, pushing the country into anarchy. Two years ago, the UN helped set up a central government for the arid, impoverished nation on the Horn of Africa.
But the government has not been able to extend its influence outside the city of Baidoa, where it is headquartered about 140 miles northeast of Mogadishu. The country was largely under the control of warlords until this past summer, when the Islamic militia movement seized power.
Experts fear the conflict in Somalia could engulf the region. A recent U.N. report said 10 countries have been supplying arms and equipment to both sides of the conflict, using Somalia as a proxy battlefield. Some analysts also fear that the courts movement hopes to make Somalia a third front, after Afganistan Iraq, in militant Islam's war against the West.
The Islamic group's often severe interpretation of Islam is reminiscent, to some, of Afghanistan's Taliban regime — ousted by a U.S.-led campaign in 2001 for harboring Bin Laden . The U.S. government says four al-Qaida leaders, believed to be behind the 1998 bombing of the U.S. Embassies in Kenya and Tanzania, are now leaders in the Islamic militia.
On Ethiopian television Monday night, the defense ministry said troops would move toward the city of Jowhar, about 55 miles from Mogadishu. Later, Ethiopia made a push in that direction, capturing the villages of Bandiradley, Adadow and Galinsor, according Yusuf Ahmed Ali, a businessman in Adadow.
As its military forces advanced against militia fighters, Somalia's government also sought to seal its borders in order to prevent foreign Islamic militants from joining the Islamic courts forces.
Residents living along Somalia's coast have seen hundreds of militants arriving by boat, apparently in answer to calls by religious leaders to wage a holy war against Ethiopia.

Re: Somalia Islamists declare war on Ethiopia, but maintain peace with Somali Govt

your right, but its stupid to be helping the americans attack the somalians in the first place. there would be no need for blankets and food if the people were left alone. and even after giving the stuff, most of the items dont get to the people who need them in time, also many being dead...
