Soldiers speak up!

oh wow, this is unreal. We’re not fighting a rabid unorganized insurgent group, these guys are highly trained and capable of caring out guerella warfare tactics of hit and run. Probably have read Sun Tzu, too. Hats off to Pakistan army and it’s jawans for fighting such a foe in such a difficult terrain and making progress against them in such short time.

‘They are well equipped, they have mortars. They have rockets, sniper rifles and every type of sophisticated weapons,’ said Zaigham

RAWALPINDI: ‘They used to attack early in the morning or after dark. They would always go for an ambush,’ said Lieutenant Zaigham, wounded in battle with the Taliban and lying in a hospital.

Zaigham – who did not give his full name – sustained shrapnel wounds from fierce street fighting in the Swat valley and is a patient at the Combined Military Hospital in Rawalpindi, away from the combat in the northwest.

Lying in bed with bandaged wounds, he and fellow soldiers spoke of intense battles against heavily-armed insurgents, who put up stiff resistance and are often able to outflank Pakistan’s well-equipped and motivated soldiers.

Pakistan has declared the combat area a closed military zone, sealed off to journalists and aid workers. It is impossible to corroborate information coming from behind the frontlines from either soldiers or trapped civilians.

From May 4 to May 17, when Zaigham was wounded, his unit advanced slowly from Khwazakhela in northern Swat to the nearby town of Matta, which has long been under Taliban control.

‘There were strong resistance during the entire journey but we managed to clear the area. They buried mines and planted IEDs (improvised explosive devices) every 50 metres,’ he said.

‘There were checkpoints, bases and training centres in the mountains. We were clearing and destroying all this.’

‘They positioned snipers in holes made out of the walls of houses. They used civilians as human shields. They used to attack from houses and roofs.’

‘They are well equipped, they have mortars. They have rockets, sniper rifles and every type of sophisticated weapons,’ said Zaigham.

‘I am certain that foreign elements are behind these militants. Can I ask something very simple – who are their sponsors? What their sources of funding? Who runs their logistics?’ he said.

Residents trapped by the fighting in Swat have also said the Taliban dug trenches and were well armed. US-based Human Rights Watch has accused the Taliban of using ‘human shields’ by preventing civilians from leaving.

Zaigham was wounded when a rocket shell exploded in Matta and shards of shrapnel sliced into his shoulder and leg. He needs constant care.

‘Some of my colleagues embraced shahadat (martyrdom) in this fight and some were wounded, but we forced the militants to retreat,’ he said.

Pakistan says more than 1,050 militants and 58 soldiers have been killed, but Taliban spokesmen speaking to local media heavily contradict those claims.

Neither have authorities released any word on civilian casualties.

Wounded soldiers who spoke to AFP said they were willing to lay down their lives for what commanders have declared a fight to ‘eliminate’ militants.

Soldier Haseeb Ahsan, 26, was among those flown into Peochar, in northern Swat last week in a bid to open a new front and wrest back control of a Taliban bastion and alleged stronghold of Swat Taliban commander Maulana Fazlullah.

The airborne troops admitted they came under heavy fire.

‘We landed in the jungle. Militants ambushed our group. I received two bullets in my right thigh, but I kept on firing’ he said.

‘My wish was to die in the way of Allah and for my country. I will definitely go back and hit them hard,’ he said.

One of the younger soldiers, Mohammad Asif, 18, was he was wounded last week in Swat’s main town of Mingora, where the Taliban are still in full control.

‘It was midnight. I was standing in front of my trench, when I was shot. They always attack secretly. I wanted to tell them ‘don’t attack like jackals, attack like men’,’ he said.

‘When I was hit, I returned fire and they ran away. I want to go back, I wish I could become a martyr for my country’ he said.

Re: Soldiers speak up!

*Link please. *:)

Thats kinda dumb coming from a soldier.

If anything, it only shows how paranoid and defeated the soldier was.

Re: Soldiers speak up!

^ It is, and I hope he realizes that. He cant expect a bunch of militants to resort to rules/norms of engagement against a conventional army that vastly outnumbers them, and has tactical/armament/logistics superiority.

Reading various articles militants have better arms/ammos in the guerilla warfare, mountainous region doesn't help army either.

Re: Soldiers speak up!

ofcourse you cant expect a bunch of thugs to fight like soldiers. soldiers dont take civilian hostages either, but these douches do.

Things that might NOT be surprising may STILL be cowardly.

Oh yeah, just like how the thousands of extremists hiding inside of lal masjid, had perfectly and neatly laid out sophisticated (unused) ammo sitting inside for media to come and take pictures :hehe:

Re: Soldiers speak up!

^so you think the talibans we're fighting aren't well equipped? they dont have modern warfare? and they're not putting stiff resistance against the army?

Re: Soldiers speak up!

^ I never said they 'arent' well equipped, read again... I said if they're more equipped than the great Pakistan Army like ehtesaab is implying, then we should just 'chullu bhar paani me doon marying', considering we have spent virtually our entire economy's well being in our military and its armament.

Ummm… the government forces would have, after securing the militant facility, catalogued all arms and ammunition found inside - a process that would requre the government to collect up and sort the arms and ammunition in order to ensure they were properly counted.

If all the ammunition was unused, how did security force personnel get killed and wounded during the attack? Did they shoot themselves?

Re: Soldiers speak up!

It doesnt take sophisticated ammunition to take out a few soldiers mad_scientist. Infact, even a ghulail can kill a person, I hope you know that.

yes, they may not be more equipped than the army when it comes to aerial combat or heavy ground armament like tanks and heavy armored vehicles etc but they're matching them when it comes to conventional arms, sophisticated assault rifles, bombs etc. But you're comparing them to lal masjid goons, they're way more equipped than them.

Re: Soldiers speak up!

Musharraf is long gone. When will those people from the Army/paramilitary who participated in the Lal Masjid operation speak up and say no they only had ghulails in there, we planted the rest of the weapons? Much is made of the Army not wanting to fight and this isnt our war and army has sympathy etc etc, and no doubt these sympathetic people have been waiting for the dictator to go before they spoke their minds. when will these sympathetic people speak up and tell us about the magical ghulail wielding lal masjid people?

It takes tactical radios, sniper rifles, RPGs, 12.7mm machine guns, even anti-tank recoilless rifles to successfully launch an ambush against an armor/infantry push. All, which the talibs have.

You speak as if these generals and dictators are a bunch of farishtey, with clean pasts. Care to look up who installed the aziz and his brother in the masjid to begin with, and the countless generals following him who had given their blessings? Whatever the Govt did to gain the people's support for lal masjid, be it planting weaponary or making burqa aziz go on PTV to humiliate him, backfired. Now please dont tell me the people were 100% behind the lal masjid operation and start posting anti-indian war songs again.

p.s. countless retired military personel spoke the truth. Remember a few months ago the claims of using phosphorus was abuzz. When Genl (retd) Kiani spoke out against the Kargil Operation and Mush's incompetency you guys claimed he was seeking revenge or was under Nawaz's payroll. Either way, even if some soldier comes out and says they did something wrong, you will probably find a way to deny it.

Anyways, before you start splitting/moving posts again, it is absurd to say that these rag tag militants are better equipped than the Pakistan army. That is the whole point.

Re: Soldiers speak up!

^yes, they're killing our jawans with ghulails.

In many cases the core taliban/qaeda shock troops are better equipped then the pakistani infantry. You can see the pictures of taliban with scoped rifles etc. But it's a minor point. The main point is that they have guns and have rebelled against the state in order to spread their fitna.

Man thats one hell of a ramble. Who is 'you guys' who spoke about Kiani, I dont know this Kiani person and I wish him well.

Your argument would be credible IF you had soldiers speaking about the specific operation and were being denied. That is not the case. The mosque is surrounded by soldiers for days, not one soldier talks about the magic ghulails?

Its not my fault if you are so ignorant on these topics. The guy made headlines after an exclusive interview on Merey Mutabiq. Also, Hameed Gul's assertion about phosp being used made headlines too. Maybe you were listening to anti-indian war songs then?

Thats because your comprehension issues are rusted yet again. I never said they had ghulails. They had guns in there, and guns kill people too. What I said was all that fancy state of the art that we saw neatly decorated and planted in there, that wasnt needed to kill a few people, you can use ordinary ak47s for that too. Point is simple, no need to prove how these weaker forces our armies are fighting are better equipped than us, it backfires and will diminish the non-existent support our forces already have on such matters.

Re: Soldiers speak up!

It has been proven again and again that core taliban troops are indeed better equipped as they are less in number and have more freedom to choose which weapons they can get. There is a huge smuggling of weapons from Afghanistan to Pakistan, which includes american weapons looted or sold.

While the regular soldier will have a G3 or in some cases Type 56 AK, the taliban have access these and to scopes and draganov sniper rifles.

That's not even a debate.
