It is a two way street , sometimes people become social outcast because of their own behavior drug addicts, alcoholics, and criminals are examples of those.
other times society rejects them for no fault of theirs own these rejections can be based on overt or external deformations Examples of this are scars, physical manifestations of anorexia nervosa, leprosy, or of a physical disability or social disability, such as obesity then there are societal stigmas in this case a member is outcast if he/she does not possess traits of a religion, ethnicity or religion.

well if they wanted to avoid people, they wouldnot consider it a fault? and it is upto an individual whether they like to mingle in the society or not. if they wanted to be different from mainstream and at the same time wanted to be accepted then it would be a different story.
