Social Drinking??

Asalaamu Alaikum, are the couple actually Muslim? They sound like a typical western couple.

They are muslim.

i couldnt agree more.

Peace Silaaj

How many drinkers are 5 times a day prayers?
Better question ... How many drinkers get their prayers answered and accepted?

The answer to these questions will help us realise why drinking is bad, it is because it creates a scoial problem as well as prevents us from our religious duties.

Asalaamu Alaikum wr wb, unfortunatley this is a very sad state of affairs where the consumption of alcohol is seen as the norm even by our own Muslim brothers and sisters.

Which Muslim husband would except their Muslim wife to go out drinking alcohol? That is truly sickening and unfortunatley this is the sad state of affairs for many of our Muslim brothers and sisters.

Rasulallah (Saw) called Alcohol "The mother of all evils" because it leads to SO many other evils.

Even the unborn are not safe from the dangers of alcohol. Fetal alcohol syndrome is a rather nasty disease caused by exposure to alcohol in the womb. The disease strikes one to two babies in every 1,000 births worldwide and results in chronic physical and neurological damage. According to a 10-year German study (Associated Press, London, April 8, 1993.) , symptoms include long-lasting brain damage and temporary physical deformities including a smallness of the head and stunted growth. To avoid fetal alcohol syndrome, not only are mothers recommended to completely avoid alcoholic drink during pregnancy, but doctors also recommend that men practice abstinence for several months prior to conception.

“…Will you then not abstain?” (Quran 5:91)

Suicide, homicide, domestic violence, grievous bodily harm, vandalism, self abuse and unborn-child abuse! – all evil consequences of alcohol consumption. And yet, the disease of alcohol is easily and roundly avoided by the adherents to the religion of Islam, or by those who find themselves in areas where Islamic writ is observed.

For if alcohol is indeed a disease, no less the Devil’s deadly disease, then it is one from which the pious Muslim is immune, even though it be the only disease which

·is sold in bottles;

·is advertised in newspapers, magazines, radios and television;

·is contracted by the will of man;

·has licensed outlets to spread it;

·produces revenue for the government
·brings violent deaths on the highways;

· has no germs or viral cause;

·propels one's health to self-destruction;

·destroys family life and increases crime.

(This bulleted list was fist published by IPCI, Durban, in a pamphlet entitled: Fire in your bellies)

Ibn Majah reported from Abu HurairahRZ that the Prophet (SAW) said:

“An addict of intoxication is like a worshipper of an idol.”

So if the person dies in the state of intoxication then they die without imaan (Faith) like they are an idol worshipper! May Allah have mercy on those who intoxicate themselves.

The harmful and evil effects of alcohol are well known to all people, to knowledgeable and ignorant alike. Among the harmful effects of alcohol is that which was mentioned by Allaah (interpretation of the meaning):

The Quraan states in Surah Al-Maaidah verse 90: "O Ye who believe! Intoxicants and Gambling, Sacrificing to Stones, and (divination by) Arrows, are an abomination, of Satan's handiwork; Keep away from such, that Ye may prosper."

Allah Ta’ala has described intoxicants amongst other things as being appalling, despicable and hateful acts of Satan and he has commanded us to abstain from them, Allah thereafter states in the next verse: -

Satan’s plan is to sow hatred and enmity amongst you with intoxicants and gambling, and to hamper you from the remembrance of Allah and from prayer. Will you not give up? (5:91)

In these two verses Allaah emphatically forbids alcohol, when He mentions it in conjunction with Al‑Ansaab (stone altars for sacrifices to idols, jinn, etc), and Al‑Azlaam (arrows for seeking luck or decision), which were symbols of shirk that were widespread in the Arabian peninsula before Islam, and He describes it as being the Shaytaan’s handiwork, which is immorality and evil. And Allaah commands us to avoid it and describes that as being the means that leads to success. And He describes its spiritual harm as hindering man from carrying out the obligations and duties enjoined by sharee’ah, namely remembrance of Allaah (dhikr) and prayer.

Alcohol leads to many harmful things, and deserves to be called “the mother of all evils” – as it was described by our Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), who said: “Alcohol is the mother of all evils.” in al-Silsilah al-Saheehah, 1854. And the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Alcohol is the mother of all evils, the greatest of major sins. Whoever drinks it may end up committing incest with his mother, his maternal aunt and his paternal aunt.”

This is some of the evidence of the truthfulness of our Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him). And what he spoke of has indeed come to pass. Have you not heard the news about that young man who came home drunk and committed incest with his mother after imbibing intoxicants? He threatened to kill himself if she did not do it, so she took pity on him and did what he wanted. Then when he came to his senses and realized what had happened, he killed himself.

Look at how things ended after he drank alcohol. He committed incest with his mother, then he killed himself. We ask Allaah to keep us safe and sound.

The Encyclopaedia Britannica states that most cases of sexual assault against relatives such as sisters, mothers and daughters happen under the influence of alcohol.

With regard to those who say that drinking a little alcohol is good for the heart, the response to that is:

1 – Modern research has proven that what is said about the benefits of alcohol for the heart and that it dilates the arteries, is a serious mistake. Alcohol does not dilate the arteries that bring nutrition to the heart, as was thought in the past, rather it dilates the veins that lie beneath the skin, whilst at the same time constricting the arteries, because of the accumulation of fats and cholesterol in them. This contributes to blood clots in the heart and angina, especially when it is accompanied by smoking, which contributes to congestion and narrowing of the arteries.

Alcohol also affects the muscle of the heart itself, when it becomes poisoned and dysfunctional, especially after drinking beer that contains cobalt, as when the heart becomes inflamed as a result of exhaustion when burning alcohol.

2 – These supposed benefits to the heart may be attained by means of things other than alcohol, the sinfulness and harmful effects of which outweigh any good it may do or benefits it may bring.

3 – It has also been said that the benefits that alcohol is said to bring to the heart come from the fruits and other substances from which alcohol is made, such as grapes, apples, etc. Based on this, these benefits may be obtained from these foods in the forms in which Allaah has permitted them, without making alcohol from them.

4 – We should weigh up those benefits to the heart – if they are true – against the destructive effects that alcohol has on health, which you can find out about by consulting any medical reference work that speaks of addiction to alcohol and its destructive effects on man.

See for example: al-Idmaan al-Kuhooli by Dr Nabeel Subhi al-Taweel, published by Mu’sasat al-Risaalah, Beirut.

Abhaath wa A’maal al-Mu’tamar al-‘Aalami al-Thaalith wa’l-Raabi’ ‘an al-Tibb al-Islami, published in Kuwait, 1405 AH, 1407 AH.

Because some people in the past – like some of their counterparts nowadays – thought that wine had some benefits, Taariq ibn Suwayd al-Ja’fi – one of the companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) – came and asked him about alcohol, and he forbade it. He said: “We make it as a remedy”. He said: “It is not a remedy, rather it is a disease.” Narrated by Muslim. This is a sign that his Prophethood was true.

With regard to your saying that “Man has the sense to control his actions and to stop drinking before he becomes intoxicated”, this pays no attention to the ways of the accursed Shaytaan, who seeks to distance people from the Lord of the Worlds. It is also the words of one who does not know – or perhaps chooses to ignore – how a drinker’s relationship with alcohol begins until he becomes drunk or addicted.

The Shaytaan gradually leads a person from a little to a lot, from minor to major, from sin to kufr, as much as he can, step by step. This is what the Lord of the Worlds refers to in Soorat al-Noor, where He says (interpretation of the meaning):

“O you who believe! Follow not the footsteps of Shaytaan (Satan). And whosoever follows the footsteps of Shaytaan (Satan), then, verily, he commands Al‑Fahsha’ , and Al‑Munkar [disbelief and polytheism (i.e. to do evil and wicked deeds; and to speak or to do what is forbidden in Islam)]. And had it not been for the Grace of Allaah and His Mercy on you, not one of you would ever have been pure from sins. But Allaah purifies (guides to Islam) whom He wills, and Allaah is All‑Hearer, All‑Knower”
*
[al-Noor 24:21]**

The poet also referred to this when he said:

A glance, then a smile, then a greeting, then words, then an appointment, then a meeting.” *

Although this is clear to everyone who understands how people are and how the Shaytaan gets to them, it is more obvious in the case of alcohol and those who drink it.

According to the eastern proverb, “In the beginning a man takes a cup of wine… then the first cup takes a second, then the cup of wine takes the man.”

The story begins with advice from a doctor or friend to have a cup of wine to increase the appetite, or to help one relax, or it starts by joining friends in a social gathering where cups of alcohol are being passed around, or as part of a meal offered, or whatever.

Then gradually physical and psychological bonds are formed to alcohol until it becomes part of a person’s life, and the drunkard becomes a slave to intoxication and to alcohol, and he seeks it as a sick person seeks medicine, as the poet said:

A cup that is drunk for pleasure, and a cup that is drunk as a remedy for the first.

In the first cup he may have found some benefit, without getting drunk, and some relaxation and pleasure without losing his mind, and the second likewise, but now he is longing for the cup of yesterday. When the body gets used to this alcoholic poison, it needs to increase the dose of alcohol time after time, in order to enjoy the relaxation and pleasure that it found in the first cup. Then the drunkard starts to drink more regularly, and his desire for alcohol grows stronger. The only guarantee against addiction is not to drink alcohol at all.

Hence we can see the wisdom of Islam in forbidding a little or a lot of alcohol, because a little is the first step towards a lot, and a little added to a little becomes a lot.

As the poet said: Do not think of a little as insignificant, because even the mountains are formed of small pebbles.

With regard to your asking: why does Islam require the Muslims to keep away from alcohol and pork in order for their religious commitment to be sound? Why does it not just explain how harmful they are and let people choose for themselves?

This is the flawed questioning of one who is trying to cheat himself. It is well known that people are not all the same in their levels of understanding of what is beneficial and what is harmful, and their levels of will power are not the same either, when it comes to choosing what is beneficial and avoiding what is harmful. The behaviour of individuals and societies cannot be controlled if things are left to each person’s choice.

If things are left to people’s choice then the harm that results from drinking alcohol is not limited only to the one who drinks, so that he could be left to his own devices and choose whatever he wants for himself. Rather the harmful results affect everyone. The diseases that result from alcohol weaken society as a whole. The productivity of the drunkard is decreased because of his drunkenness, which affects others. The economy is affected as a result of the money spent on treating him, which also affects others. Moreover there are crimes which result from this addiction. In a World Health Organization report on violent crimes in 30 countries, including the US and the UK, it says that 86% of murders and 50% of rapes are carried out under the influence of alcohol. There are many similar, well-known statistics on such topics in various countries around the world.

With regard to road accidents, the statistics are even more well-known. In 1965 – for example – there were 49,000 deaths on roads in the US, and 1,800,000 cases of permanent disability. Public health officials at the time estimated that half of these deaths were caused by alcohol. The losses resulting from these deaths in that year alone were valued at 8900 million dollars.

In Chile, in South America, 70% of traffic accidents in 1966 were caused by drunkenness. In Paris between 10 and 15 % of all accidents were found to have been caused by alcohol.

Moreover, we may respond to this question by asking:

Why don’t we explain how evil it is to steal and then leave people to make their own choice, with no force or punishment? The same could be said of killing and bribery… But then society would become a dangerous and barbaric place, governed by the law of the jungle.

This question itself may be directed against all the laws and systems which people follow in their lives.

The main reason why people deviate from the religion of Allaah, which was revealed from heaven, and go against the laws that He has prescribed for His slaves, is this idea – the idea that people can be left with no commands to follow or prohibitions to heed, even though adhering to commands and prohibitions is what is meant by submission to Allaah (‘uboodiyyah) in its simplest form. This is the pure right of the Creator because He is the Creator, and it is the primary duty of the created being, because he is created. The Lord of the Worlds says (interpretation of the meaning):

“Does man think that he will be left neglected (without being punished or rewarded for the obligatory duties enjoined by his Lord Allaah on him)?”

[al-Qiyaamah 75:36].

i.e., does man think that his Lord will leave him alone, with no obligations or commands or prohibitions, then He will ignore him in his grave with no resurrection, no gathering, no reckoning? What then would be the point of servitude to the Lord of the Worlds, if there were no commands or prohibitions, no reward or punishment? How then would anyone enter Paradise?.

*Abdullah Ibn Amr reports from the Prophet , who said, "One who is disobedient to parents, gambles, harsh after charity and is a habitual drunkard shall not enter paradise." (Daarami) *

*Ibn Umar narrates that the Messenger of Allah said, "There are three for whom Allah has forbidden paradise, a habitual drunkard, one disobedient to parents, and a careless husband who establishes impurity in his family." (Ahmad and Nasai) *

Ibn Abbas reported that the Messenger of Allah said’ "If a habitual drunkard dies, he will meet Allah like the one who worships idols." (Ahmad, Ibn majah from Abu Hurrairah)

*From the above Ahaadith, we can clearly see the Prophet and the Islamic view regarding intoxicants. *

*In another Hadith the Prophet has described intoxicants as: - *

1. The key to all evils.
*2. The head of all errors and lapses. *
*3. The most terrible of major sins. *
*4. The mother of all atrocities. *
*5. The mother of all evils. *

*In one Hadith, Rasulullah (Saw) said: *

*Imân(faith) and alcohol cannot gather (are not compatible) with a person *

This means that when a person has drunk alcohol, then iman has left they're body. It only enters the body again once the person is sober that is if Allah wills. So if the person dies whilst they have drunk alcohol then they will die WITHOUT IMAN!

A person who dies without iman will enter Jahannum! Even before Jahannam they will feel the terrible torcher of death and the grave punishment. All of this just for their own foolish desires. Is it really worth it? Thats upto the person who decides to drink and intoxicate themself if their willing to risk eternity of torture for a short while of intoxication.

Surely the person who dies intoxicated will regret it forever and surely we only have one chance in this life so why should we waste it and cause ourselves destruction? We could die at ANY second so is it worth taking the risk?

Allah has questioned the user of intoxication:

“*Then, will you end it?”*

i think your mssing the point in question....

the fact that social confirmity dictates what is acceptable in our religion and not our religion unfortunatley...

how many aunties, bajis and chachi's do we know who embrace extended male family members, wear short sleeves, or tight clothing... how many of them read 5 times a day... and better still lets assume they do... is their prayers answered and accepted?

Both acts are wrong, yet we are conditioned to react more aggresivley to one as opposed to the other.

Peace saraali

This is an over simplification. Firstly Islam is not separate from societal norms it helps to create it and hence that is part of the purpose of the Shari'ah.

To explain why there is this dichotomy of state then we can ask the real question afterwards inshaAllah ...

okay ... Aunties, uncles et al come from a society where some of the unIslamic things are acceptable such as not wearing hijab, hugging non-mehram males and so on. However, they come from a society where alcohol is still taboo.

The Muslims who observe societal norms of India/Pakistan are in this context no better or no worse than Muslims who justify alcohol in this society. Now the reason why they have this aversion to it is many fold some of which could be that they come from a society where Muslims have lived for many years and consider it more Islamic than the West.

Other than this alcohol has not ever really been a safe societal activity.

Now the question is "Is one set of hypocrisy the same as another set?". One can argue that hypocrisy is hypocrisy. However, some can say that it depends.

Both are wronging themselves with respect to the Islamic dictate, but one is worse on the societal level. I hope you see where I am going.

In fact Hamza81 has demonstrated that Islamically sin does have categories and without doubt some crimes are worse than others.

Now for those who pray whilst doing the things you mention there is nothing in Islam that says that their prayers are not answered. However, there is explicit reference saying that the one who drinks his prayers are invalid for 40 days. I hope this gives a better balance of the severity of the subject at hand.

Re: Social Drinking??

ok i have some spice to add to this .. like the starter of this thread i too know a couple that drinks alot, and openly, and they pray too and give zakat and everything. I don't judge them because personally i don't feel like i have any right to judge them, but what bothers me about them is that i say nothing to them, and a couple of times i have skipped a prayer ( because of a work meeting etc- i always try to make up prayers with quaza) and this couple the wife is always criticizing that, saying that i am going to go to hell because of missing a prayer, until one day i said to her,"Please stop preaching religion, religion is between me and Allah." So i guess that brings the question- has anyone come across people like this, and secondly what do you all do?

Re: Social Drinking??

id tell her on her safe to shut up hypocrite female

:salam:

Dear Chicaogin

I don’t think we are in a position to hand out judgments regarding ones salvation, we are not in control of that. What we can do though is establish the criteria for right and wrong in this world based on what Islam teaches us. We can enforce the Islamic shariah based on that criteria then.

Re: Social Drinking??

you know that's what i wanted to say... but i didn't want to get into a war of the words with her, so i just said, "let me follow relgiion the way i want too and you can follow it the way you want to"

Re: Social Drinking??

^ Peace chicagoin

My first reaction to your post was ... "liar" ... Astaghfirullah I should not have such thoughts regarding people...

However, considering the possibility of truth in this ... then if I were in your position I would have thanked them done a du'a for them on their advice and said that I would try harder to pray on time. I would also do another du'a that they feel as passionately about other Islamic obligations and ability to abide by them.

We can only bring out the faults in each other for the betterment of each other.

Drinking Alcohol is forbidden in Islam whether its 'social occasional drinking' or habitual drinking.

a) They are not hurting anyone. may be and may be not. for instance, drunk driving: They may hurt others or hurt their own selves if apprehended.
b) Yes we cannot pass judgement on them but at least tell them [as you did] that it is wrong. After that it is a matter between them and Allah and may be between them and the state as well.

Asalaamu Alaikum wr wb, sins are categorised by either being major sin or minor sin. Major sins are much worse than any minor sin but alcohol is certainly one of the biggest major sins because it was described by Rasulallah (Saw) as "the mother of all evils". This is because a person who is intoxicated with alcohol will tend to do MANY more sins for example fornicatation, adultry, voilent conduct,foul mouthed, inhumane behaviour and having NO shame whatsoever because of the false sense of confdence and also scientifically they will act literally like an animal because a certain part of the brain is functioning when a person is drunk which brings our animal behaviour in a person.

That is why people who regularly get drunk wake up wondering what terrible things they have done the night before.
The list of sins minor and major sins that can come from consuming alchohol is on going.

Here is a good example from the time of the Prophet (Saw):

Once a pious man met a woman, who invited him towards committing a sin (adultery). The man flatly refused. After her constant insisting, she still failed. Thereafter, she gave him a choice of options, 1. Committing adultery with her or 2. To murder her newly born child, whom had she begot from her previous husband. Or 3. To consume some alcohol which she possessed. If he were not willing to comply then she would scream and falsely inform the inhabitants of that place that he had raped her. The man upon pondering decided to consume the alcohol, taking it to be least harmful of the three sins. Upon the consumption of alcohol, he became intoxicated, and then consequently, he killed the child and also committed adultery with the woman.

In one Hadith, Rasulullah has said that Imân (Faith) and alcohol cannot gather (are not compatible) with a person
(Nasai)

This shows that imaan cannot even remain in the body when a person has consumed alcohol. This is how serious it is when one drinks that they have no imaan in them until they become sober that is if Allah wills.

So in effect when a person is drinking alcohol and if they happened to have died in that state then Allah forbid that person would die without imaan because as the hadith stated imaan cannot remain in the body of a person who consumed alcohol. This is VERY serious indeed that a person is risking their ETERNITY because of this evil habit!

May Allah keep us away from such evil and help those Muslims who are doing this evil habit to get off it immediatley and may we ALL die with imaan!
