My first reaction to your post was ... "liar" ... Astaghfirullah I should not have such thoughts regarding people...
However, considering the possibility of truth in this ... then if I were in your position I would have thanked them done a du'a for them on their advice and said that I would try harder to pray on time. I would also do another du'a that they feel as passionately about other Islamic obligations and ability to abide by them.
We can only bring out the faults in each other for the betterment of each other.
