So you think...

you’re American/Canadian/British/European? Maybe on piece of paper you might be, but you really aren’t. So stop kidding yourself, stop looking down on Pakistan and Pakistani people. You never bothered to learn Urdu, you proudly proclaim your Muslim-ness yet downplay your Pakistaniyat, maybe you got a gora crew or you roll with the kalas looking down on the FOBs/Freshers…well guess what? Every one sees you South Asian or perhaps Middle Eastern/Central Asian…you fool no one.

This is not a rant. This is reality. No doubt being born in Europe has given me privileges, but I am not about to throw away thousands of years of my history to pretend to be something I am not. So I’ll marry a Pakistani, teach my kids Urdu/Pakhto, spend as much time in Pakistan as possible.

Keep the identity alive.

Re: So you think...

So true. In after school programs they teach native language to the kids. I have seen my chineese, indian and iranian friends send of their kids to such programs but all my pakistani friends have this dont care why bother attitude.

Re: So you think...

You sure this isnt a rant?

Re: So you think...

Nope, reality for many people in this community :)

Re: So you think...

Exactly the point. These days knowing Mandarin, Hindi is an asset. Both in the workplace and in social settings being able to talk about your identity is way better than being some brown sahib.

Re: So you think…

:hehe:

Is that really Dilip Kumar? WOW

Re: So you think...

Hindi? As in the one spoken in Indian soaps, or in the one spoken in Bollywood movies? If it's the latter, then tell me what i win!!!

Re: So you think...

Does it matter? Think having to travel to India for back office work, or being able to understand a language of millions of people.

Re: So you think...

I see

Re: So you think...

edit: Well I did initially say that visas are tight these days, but then I thought that's not for everyone, so I edited my post

So yes, I see your point, but everyone speaks English there at work.

Re: So you think…

I agree :k:

Those people should get the hint when every time a gora asks them: ‘where are you from?’

Re: So you think...

ACTUALLY people living in Pakistan act more gora then us and refuse to speak in Urdu. We westerns are bholay bhalay, seedhay saadhay log. I do not downplay pakistaniyat, I embrace it so whenever things don't do my way, I just say "they're being racist" :)

Re: So you think...

awwwwwwwww

Re: So you think…

Haha! It is a well sensitive issue isn’t it. But yeah, you nailed it on the head. :k:

Re: So you think…

Thank you for this thread! :sheen:

Re: So you think...

I cannot remember a time when I denied my heritage or roots. Even during troubled times, I never lied or pretended I wasnt Pakistani.

You know, on one hand.............we're told to embrace our Pakistaniyat.

And on the other hand...............we're told no matter how hard we try.........we will never be real Pakistanis.

So, which is it? Let us know when you've decided what side we should be on.

Re: So you think...

Where do u hear that, You dont need to try. You try when you want to convince others. You need to know that you are Pakistani and if you know you r Pakistani then stop trying.
