Reliability, fuel economy and great resale value. I thought it was obvious.
and for that, you pay higher price upfront, higher insurance and higher repair cost - not to mention that Toyota or Honda almost never offer zero percent financing, so you are probably paying higher interest rate in comparison.
I strongly believe that you end up losing money at the end when you buy Toyota or Honda
^ Majority of Desi systematically move from East to West when it comes to shopping for Car. It goes like Japan > Korea >* italy/*Germany > Britian > USA
Nothing makes you lot happy does it.
Go and buy yourself a beamer then or a corvette. Okay I want a vette, just for the weekend, because God knows I can't afford to fill that thing up everyday. Going bankrupt at the gas station.
I have a 1989 Toyota dibba, and I LOVE it…it is so fun to drive, and I have the back outfitted as a galley/kitchen for camping. So much better than a VW bus!
not going to lie, as a student i drove gold 97 camry, as desi i can be, and then after graduating i bought guess? a 2012 Silver toyota camry has desi has i can be, but after driving it for 4 months. i was fed up with it. like every camry i would see was desi driving it. decided enough was enough. traded in and bought a 2010 Audi A4. personally i love my Car. people say it's driving from point A to B, but once you drive it you will know the difference. why buy smartphones all phones can massage and make calls and receive email and send it?
i lost money when i traded in the toyota camry. but i don't regret it. yea, i don't get it either with desis either toyota or honda, and if i am going to make big jump it will be Lexus. c'mon think outside of the box.
Toyota is not one of the best selling makes in US because of desis, and it is not on top of loyalty because of desi buyers.
the stats on residual value are there for anyone to find out and they do retain their value significantly better than lets say lesser japanese brands like mitsubishis or US makes.
I heard Hyundai mentioned, they have surpassed some pretty established brands in terms of loyalty, customer satisfaction and residual value recently.
at the end of the day, get what you want, know pros and cons, and be at peace with it. I liked a Jaguar XJS v12 since i was a kid and bought one knowing that repairs are a pain, but it was fun when it was not at the shop.
I am in the marketing services industry and automotive has been one of my main focus areas in last 3 years.
After my husband's accident last month, in which his Lexas got totaled, we ended up getting a 2012 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid. 0% financing, the insurance is waaay less, mileage it gets is insane, and it is fully loaded. I was very impressed and pleasantly surprised. So much so that we're thinking about upgrading my car to a Hyundai as well in a couple of years.
We know that the resale on it will not hold its value anywhere near what the Lexas did, but honestly, we're not the type to change cars every 2-4 years. Unless its totaled in an accident, we drive our cars forever...and this brand new (it literally had 3 miles on it) car very well be passed to my 9 old in 6 years....so we are not too concerned about the depreciated value.
Hyundai is very much concerned with making sure that they are higher up in residual value because it is important to the vast majority of buyers and critical for leases. They have made great headways, and the residual value is directly related to quality, owner satisfaction, maintenance frequency and costs. that is why hyundai resale value has increased by double digits percentage from just a few years ago.
My point is very simple and is not focused on individual circumstances and preferences, but that this preference for honda and toyota is not just desis and there are some very good reasons for it, which is reflected in their residual value ratings and owner loyalty ratings consistently, plus vehicle rankings by edmunds, KBB and industry publications
Desi mentality is "BEST BANG FOR THE BUCK" car with cheap maintenance cost and more reliability. Personally I have owned an 93` Integra and 2009 Accord couple in the past, however since I have moved away from the bandwagon and have bought an 09 Infiniti FX 35 which i had for about 6 months which got totalled in an accident after having it for 6 months and Now I have a 2012 328i SPORTS.
Though Toyota and Honda are reliable cars! but desi infatuation with them can find its root back home in Pakistan! Where world think only japanese can make cars and that only Toyota and Honda! Being resistant to change in other thing, they tend to keep that where ever they go in the world.
Personally having driven all Japanese Toyota, Honda , Nissan while in Pakistan, I have stayed right away from any japanese since last 14 years! I can always drive a Toyota when I visit Pakistan
