So what sort of a muslim are you?

The pressures of modern-day living has an effect on muslims. So many people use the term “LIBERAL” muslim nowadays. I started thinking what does it mean in the over all scheme of things. I was thinking about myself when I drew up these classification of muslims. IMO in order of ranking, these are:

A. Momin: They know most (if not all) Islamic rulings (Quran and Sunnah). They are scholars, and practice everything which Islam dictates. Their lives are a true reflection of a perfect momin and a muslim. They live normal lives but are consistently enhancing their knowledge about Islam. They avoid all prohibited actions at all costs, and stay away from even those actions which have a suspicion of being prohibited.

B. True Muslim: They strive to know as much as possible about Islamic rulings. Are not scholars. They adapt their lifestyles based on Islamic ruling. Once they know of an Islamic ruling, they do not hesitate to modify their lives to comply with Islam. Identifying Characteristic Regular in their prayers (usually in the mosque) and keep regular fasting.

C. Typical muslim: They are the ones who seek knowledge about Islamic ruling. Are not scholars. Even if they know abt an Islamic ruling, they won’t change their lifestyles automatically. They do adapt to Islamic rulings which are easier to follow (selectively). They tend to accept the easiest, and not necessarily the correct, interpretation. Are prone to carry out ijtihad in their minds whenever a new problem comes in and take the most convenient option. They know they are doing wrong, but hope and pray that Allah will forgive their transgressions. Identifying Characteristic: Regular on Friday prayers and try to pray as much as possible for the remaining five prayers daily.

D. Liberal muslim: They do not actively seek, but are passive receivers of knowledge. They live their lives according to their own wishes. In most religious (or problematic) matters they tend to automatically do an ijtihad (in their minds) themselves and take the most convenient option. In many cases they do not even bother about any islamic ruling. Are firm believers that religion is a personal matter between man and God. They have fundamental and rudimentary knowledge about Islam and Islamic rulings. They consider that if you do not do harm to other people that will be sufficient. Haqooq-Allah are low on their priorities. Personal success and humantaranian concerns are top on their list. Non-confrontationist, they basically try to live life to the fullest. In the back of their minds they sometimes wonder if they are wrong, have a sense of loss, but hope Allah will forgive their transgressions. Identifying Characteristic: Usually regular on Friday prayers (only) and keep fasting (in Ramadan) if convenient.

E. Lousy muslim: They are similar to liberal muslims, with the added characteristic that they have no sense of loss. They do not even consider that they are doing anything wrong. They are called muslims only because they were born in a muslim household, but could as easily be idenitifed with any other community. Have no idea about Islam (even the fundamental mandatory aspects). Identifying Characteristic: They treat some Islamic occasions as a get-together opportunity e.g. Eid prayers and (rarely) Friday prayers.

This is not a critique on anyone or any group. Rather I tried to create a sketch of muslims, as I believe they are right now.

Do you folks care to share if these groups are accurate?
And which group do you consider yourself to be in?

Be honest, ok!

If i’m honest I would consider myself in Group C. I don’t pretend to be the best muslim but I do try and learn about Islam and apply it the best I can.

I’ll give you an example. When I learnt that Riba (Interest) was haram, I didn’t take out anything interest based

Good Post Pristine - What happened to all your past aggression??

http://www3.pak.org/gupshup/smilies/smile.gif

BTW - It’s funny how a practicing muslim who follows Islam is labelled a ‘MOlvi’ or a ‘Fundamentalist’. What label would we put on our Beloved Prophet?

Grew up!

One word about me “a kafir by law”

Basically I am research-oriented person, try to analyze and evaluate things until I find its validity and reliability. I don’t follow blind rulings passed by my parents or elders or maulvi sahab.

Religion is not an inherited stuff, its something that is related to spirituality, a kind of connection between Allah and Human. Even if I pray and don’t find a change in myself afterwards, I feel my prayer is lost. This is how feel about my personal relationship with Allah.

So its very hard to define what type of a Muslim I am. I just try to be a good human.

“The only way to have a friend is to be one.”

I don’t know what category I fit in, but I would say I am Muslim who follows Quran and Sunnah and encourages others to do the same.

Take it Easy sir.

“So its very hard to define what type of a Muslim I am. I just try to be a good human.” Hmmm…

Ms Pakistani
Sis, that will make you a typical muslim (Category C), which I believe most of us are (unless I am mistaken).

The Watcher
Welcome back, brother!

http://www3.pak.org/gupshup/smilies/smile.gif

Because of your aggression and zeal I would tend to put u in Category B (or A), as I would find it very difficult to assume that a person with such strong ideas is not practicing on those ideas too. Correct me if I am wrong.

http://www3.pak.org/gupshup/smilies/wink.gif

This post is about the strength of conviction and how we act on our beliefs, and not whether any belief is right or wrong.

**none of us have a right to put ourselves or others in any category. Its riya (show off). Only Allah knows whats inside our hearts, leave it to Him to decide, no need to tell others where you are.

"A momin never calls himself momin, this is the pehchan (indication) of a momin. Just pray, fast and do good things and dont hurt others and try to create harmony instead of hatred (unlike watcher), and thats all you need to be a good Muslim or Momin. No need to pose or tell the whole world, Oh I am so good or Oh I do all these things. This is absolute riya(show off)."

Take it easy sir.

Pristu: “kafir by law” means musalaman other than “serkari musalaman”.

According to Section 295-C of PPC, I am liable to death penalty as a mandatory punishment if ever I pose like Muslim, Act like Muslim, Dress like Muslim or even if I use Muslim form of salutation to greet anyone. Need to know more about me?

acha bhai yeh mubarakbadaiñ kaheen aur jakar do. Just reply if its relavent to the topic. Try to stick to the topic.

This is very strange. On the one hand we say that muslims should be united etc and then in the same breath we create various categories. Who will decide what kind of a muslim I am? Certainly not any human being on this earth. So stop all this nonsense.

Certainly whoever has said the Kalima, then his matter is with Allah(SWT)and Allah(SWT) will judge what kind of a muslim a person was on the day of Qayama. We should all pray to Allah(SWT) to keep us and guide us to Sirat al Mustaqeem and on the day of resurrection we are raised with his humble slaves. We should all strive to become Momin and ask for Jannat al Firdaws the highest paradise in our supplications. May Allah have mercy on all of us.

SubhanAllah...you guys, a muslim is a muslim correct? I don't see the point of trying to categorize or classify people like that. I've seen alot of you using the phrase, Allah knows best, what happened to it?rueful smile Remember it is not for us to judge or to label, only Allah swt knows what is in our hearts and the hearts of those around us.

I’m a muslim who tries her hardest to please Allah (swt) and Inshallah HE will see my intentions for what they are and bless me
