I don’t get it, what’s so wrong with having underwear washed? Doesn’t it go in the washer and isn’t handled personally? I mean you just dump all the clothes, not individually piece by piece…or is it being washed by hand and thus the “controversy” over it?

The issue isn’t the underwear…or so you will have read.
The issue is how the MIL acts…reacts…or whatever.
