Smoking Haram-Why?

found this nice article on islamicfinder’s website so thought to share this with u pplz

The declaration that “There is no God Worthy of being worshipped except Allah & that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah”, demands that the Muslim accepts the Decrees set by Allah and by His Messenger-Muhammad (p.b.u.h.)

Islam is a Revelation from Allah with a complete code of life. It tells what is good and what is evil: Allah says in the Holy Quran: And We have shown him (man) the two ways (good and evil). (Quran 90/10)

He allows them all that is good and lawful, and prohibits them as unlawful all that is evil (things, deeds, beliefs, persons, foods, drinks, etc.). (Quran 7/157)

So, is smoking (cigarettes, pipes, etc.) evil or not? Let us examine its effects:

  • Smoking is a killer: causes lung-cancer, lung-tuberculosis and heart diseases.
Allah says: And do not kill yourselves. (Quran 4/29)
He also says: And do not throw yourselves into destruction. (Quran 2/195)

These verses are sufficient to make smoking Haram.

  • Smoking is a wasting of wealth. Allah says: …But spend not wastefully (your wealth) in the manner of a spendthrift, Verily, spendthrifts are brothers of the devils, and the Devil (Satan) is ever ungrateful to his Lord. (Quran 17/26-27)

  • The smoker is unjust to himself as well as his family by burning away his money and his chest!

  • The smoker not only causes harm to himself, he/she also inflicts harms upon others around him/her.
The Prophet (p.b.u.h.) said: “There should be neither harming nor reciprocating harm.” (Saheeh Al-Jami 7517)

  • The smokers cause the spread of evil; they smoke openly and thus encourage others to do the same.

  • The smokers dislike fasting and praying because they become impatient. They want to go for the next “round”. The smoker becomes like an edict.

  • The smoker smells bad! His car, home, clothes etc. carry the bad smell too.

From the above, it is clear that smoking is evil and thus it is Haram (unlawful).
If you are under any kind of stress, then turn to Allah, read the Holy Quran, and be with non-smokers. Seek Allah’s help and don’t be enslaved to something that burns you and your money.

Re: Smoking Haram-Why?

i have always heard it is makroo, but i think it ccan be considered haram.

Re: Smoking Haram-Why?

its can more appropriately be considered as makrooh tehreemi....

Re: Smoking Haram-Why?

That killing urself by smokin too much is nonsense…that means eating fatty foods should be haram since u have a bigger chance of dying of heart attack before u die of lung cancer

Re: Smoking Haram-Why?

^
its not just killing....
it has no benefits....
it is hazardous not only to the smoker but also to those around him....
it is bad for environment....
it smells bad and ppl hate being around a guy who somkes....
not only lung cancer, it can cause other diseases as well....

chances of someone getting health disorders due to smoking r far greater than chances of getting problems due to food with fats....

Re: Smoking Haram-Why?

Question :

why is smoking haram?
Answer :

Praise be to Allaah.

Perhaps you know that all nations of the world – Muslim and kaafir alike – have now started to fight smoking, because they know that it is very harmful. Islam forbids everything that is harmful, because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “There should be no harming or reciprocating harm.”

Undoubtedly there are foods and drinks which are beneficial and good, and others which are harmful and bad. Allaah described our Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) in the following terms (interpretation of the meaning):

*“he allows them as lawful At Tayyibaat (i.e. all good and lawful as regards things, deeds, beliefs, persons and foods), and prohibits them as unlawful Al Khabaa’ith (i.e. all evil and unlawful as regards things, deeds, beliefs, persons and foods) *

*[al-A’raaf 7:157] *

Is smoking one of the good and lawful things (al-tayyibaat) or one of the evil and unlawful things (al-khabaa’ith)?

Secondly: it was narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Allaah forbids you to trade gossip, to ask too many questions and to waste money.” And Allaah forbade wasteful extravagance when He said (interpretation of the meaning):

“and eat and drink but waste not by extravagance, certainly He (Allaah) likes not Al Musrifoon (those who waste by extravagance) *[al-A’raaf 7:31]*

And He described the slaves of the Most Merciful as follows (interpretation of the meaning):

“And those who, when they spend, are neither extravagant nor niggardly, but hold a medium (way) between those (extremes)” *[al-Furqaan 25:67]*

The whole world now knows that the money spent on smoking is to be considered as money wasted, from which no benefit is gained; indeed, it is money spent on something harmful. If the money which is spent on smoking worldwide were to be collected, it could have saved entire populations who have died of starvation. Is there anyone more foolish that one who holds a dollar bill and sets fire to it? What is the difference between him and the one who smokes? Indeed, the smoker is more foolish, because the folly of the one who burns a dollar bill ends there, whilst the one who smokes burns his money and also harms his body.

Thirdly: how many disasters have been caused by smoking, because of cigarette butts which are thrown away and cause fires. Other disasters have been caused in other ways, as when a house was burned down with its occupants inside, when a man lit his cigarette when there was a gas leak.

Fourthly: how many people are offended by the smell of smokers, especially when you are unfortunate enough to have one of them standing next to you in the mosque. Probably any nasty smell is easier to bear than the smell of the smoker’s mouth when he has just woken up. It is amazing how many women can put up with the smell of their husbands’ mouths! The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) forbade those who had eaten garlic or onions from coming to the mosque so that they would not offend their fellow-worshippers with their smell. The smell of onions and garlic is easier to bear than the smell of the smoker and his mouth.

These are some of the reasons why smoking is haraam.

"But spend not wastefully (your wealth) in the manner of a spendthrift, Verily, spendthrifts are brothers of the devils, and the Devil (Satan) is ever ungrateful to his Lord. (Quran 17/26-27)"

from this you can also say that going to school after you have learnt to read and write should be haraam too as we waste lots of money on it and you get stress and all sorts of health problems which can be very harming and can also lead to death

Re: Smoking Haram-Why?

While I used to cite this as a reason why smoking is haraam, I realised a counter-argument that has stopped me from this one. Red meat contains fats that block up your arteries and lead to heart attacks over time, but it is still halal. Same with ghee - it contains a high amount of saturated fats that clog up arteries and ultimately can kill you, but is still halal.

My own personal view is that expressed by armughal, though primarily out of my fear of going around telling anyone that something is halal or haraam without an explicit statement from the Quran or Hadith.

Re: Smoking Haram-Why?

^ Bhai, red meat or other BMI increasing diet if consumed in moderation makes you healthy and contains other great nutrition while cigarettes don't add anything to a person's health.

Edit: I think you don't need to declare smoking haram/halal, just go with the flow and look down upon those actually smoke, including banning smoking in/around public places on health grounds and smoking will go away automatically.

Oh and I also want to slap a extra tax on hibitual smokers that goes to the Govt's health budget for all the extra money the nation has to spend on these jerks.

Re: Smoking Haram-Why?

someone recently posted about a fatwa from a hanafi imam/scholar that suggests smoking is haram.

can we repost with source please?
thanks!

Re: Smoking Haram-Why?

It is Haram because It is. Why cant people look to the bright side rather than fight over the bad side. There is MORE good to not smoke than there is to smoke.

All i say .. yeh keep doing it ..Its your loss if you die at 40 rather than another 20 years later.

Re: Smoking Haram-Why?

such a great response.......^ thanks for the reply FBi786.....
unfortunately I won't be able to convince anyone with THAT.

anyone else have something solid?

Re: Smoking Haram-Why?

but there r alot of other things that we do that r nt only harmful 2 us but the others around us too but they r nt really haram…yes nt allowed or appreciated bt not haram. i dnt think smoking is haram :bummer:.

Re: Smoking Haram-Why?

Thats the way to put it… :cheer:

Quiting is difficuilt but it can be done if you got the right support. Put it this way you will realise how much you save when you quit, dont believe me heres a few basic tests…

Can you run a mile in 12 minutes? being a smoker you will be out of breath much quicker than a non smoker but sometimes smokers pass this test well enough… so then try running the same course with a mouth full of water and breathing through your nose… Okay now its hell isn’t it?

Second test stop smoking for three weeks and try it again you will notice the difference.

If that does not convince you then you havent done it properly

Re: Smoking Haram-Why?

The reasoning behind it was ... it has been proven to cause death, in which case it is classed as poison in fiqh ... and since taking poison is suicide and suicide is forbidden therefore smoking is forbidden ... this is the reasoning behind the fatwa I believe.
