Re: Smear tests (Ladies only!)

If you're talking about the pap smear tests, then you must have them annually, at least when you become sexually active.

They are usually part of a yearly well visit or physical. They are annoying but not as uncomfortable as the cervical exam. However, they both are extremely important as any kind of abnormality, especially cancerous, can be detected through this test.

Please do not skip this.

Re: Smear tests (Ladies only!)

O jade goody , i feel soory for her .. !

If you are in Uk then you must know that under the NHS Cervical Screening Programme, all women between the ages of 25 and 65 are regularly invited for a smear test.

The system is automated, so as long as you're registered with a GP you should receive a letter asking you to make an appointment.

As a result of research that evaluated the optimal frequency for cervical screening, women are now invited for their first test at 25. They're then invited every three years until the age of 49, and every five years from 50 to 64.

From 65, only those who've had recent abnormal tests are offered another test.

Re: Smear tests (Ladies only!)

That's good to know Aliyish. Here in the US, it's just part of a yearly exam but you could schedule just this test in case you don't want to have a complete physicial. I am not aware of an automatic system.

Re: Smear tests (Ladies only!)

Hey thats interesting how they "invite" you to take the test in Britain. Here in Canada its same as Niksik mentioned, you just make your appointment as part of your annual

Ive had one every year since Ive gotten married and I do recommend every woman take this seriously. Its definitely not anyone's idea of a fun afternoon, but its not that super super uncomfortable to the point of being painful. Dont stay away from it just because you think its tooo uncomfortable --because think of what you are trying to protect yourself from (cancer of the cervix) and how much more horrible that would be (God forbid). It does help if you go to a doc that you are comfortable and familiar with. The first time you will probably be very nervous, but the key is just to try to relax and stay calm, and then its over before you know it. You can read up on it beforehand, so you know exactly what they will be doing and you know what to expect, I think this will make it easier for you. Be sure to let your doctor know if it feels painful and ask whatever questions you need. After the first time it will become much easier for you, because at least know you know exactly what its all about. And anyways, its not like you have to go everyweek, its only once a year!

Re: Smear tests (Ladies only!)

It is recommended to get a pap smear once a year. It is extremely important for also detecting hormonal abnormalities. A very close friend of mine had not gotten hers for the past 2-3 years, and she'd been having irregular periods for quite some time. She finally got her test done, and it had some abnormalities, so they did more tests and detected a cystic growth that required operation. She is well now and healed, but that test was crucial for detection. It is a necessary part of a woman's health, and should be taken seriously.

Re: Smear tests (Ladies only!)

OK i got it done last year but i thought the test was pointless because it seems like it is meant for those women who have multiple partners or have husbands who do. Isn't that so??

Re: Smear tests (Ladies only!)

i havent had one done ever but thats i think cus i had internal done whilst being pregnant. Im so due for one..

Re: Smear tests (Ladies only!)

a 23 year old lady died from it?? :| She was probably in the hands of the wrong practitioner. And age doesn't really matter in your pap. You should just get one done once every year once you become sexually active.

It doesn't exactly hurt. Just uncomfortable. If you're sexually active, it CAN'T possibly hurt! You just feel like someone's scratching on your insides, theres only very very very slight pain at some point (which lasts for 2-3 secs) where you feel like your skin is being pulled while being scratched. Nuff detail??

Like midnighteyes said, it's better to be careful than sorry!
And I repeat, it's OVER before you think. You barely have time to 'endure' pain or discomfort. :)

Re: Smear tests (Ladies only!)

Firstly, there is a misconception. You shouldn't have a pap smear only once u r sexually active or have multiple partners you MUST have it annually from the age of 21. If u over 21 and have not had it then u r doing a great disservice to ur body and ur health.

Secondly, just because u are having sex does not mean the procedure will be less painful.

Pain caused during the procedure has a lot to do with ur gynecologist, their experience and how comfortable they make it for u. I go once a yr and experience absolutely no pain. I do however experience a bit of pressure that lasts for two seconds maximum. A friend of mine once went to a male gyno and said it was the worst experience of her life. She didn't understand anything he was saying cuz he didn't speak English very well and she said the way he did it was extremely painful. I then told her to go to my gyno and she loved her.

Going to the gyno annually includes more than just the pap smear. The only thing related to being sexually active is when they check for stds. There are many other tests they do that check for a lot of other things and u should go.

Lastly a lot of paki parents will tell u not to go to the gyno if u aren't married cuz they think ur a virgin ( ofcourse only u know that) and they say don't go cuz they will put stuff up ur vagina. The decision ofcourse is urs. For me my health has been and always will be more important than what a man thinks of me.

here we do it twice a year and I dont mind, its about my health and if I have some cancer than I damn want to know it early as possible!!

No its not so

Re: Smear tests (Ladies only!)

I hated it and never gonna go for it again.....if I'm gonna die with cancer so be it.

hareem you have 3 small kids, dont u want ur kids to have their mom around and if Allah nah karey u have cancer wouldnt u want to do everything to cure from it for the sake of ur kids?

As if there's a cure to death.

Going through all the pain and hectic every year or even after every 3 years just to detect if you've got cancer or not when you know the results gonna be fine, is useless.

Re: Smear tests (Ladies only!)

^and again annual checkups are not only to find cancer. And if u have had a bad experience, u need to find another gyno.

no one can be sure if the results are always gonna be fine...so better be safe than sorry....
its not that big of a deal and its not a painful procedure....
its just a screening test like so many others...which can detect sth earlier with better chances for treatment and better outcomes that way....
but its a personal choice...:)

I kept gettin letters through from my GP do get a smear done, so i phoned up and eventally made an appointment, bt i didnt really knw wht it involved so anyway i went along to the nurse in my GP practice for the appointment, and she asked me a few questions and asked if i am sexually active, to which i answered no, so she told me that i didnt need to get a smear, but i said that I myt as well get it dun since i was there, But OMG it was so freakin painful, that she cudnt even do it properly because i was crying lol !! but anyway i dnt ever want 2 get that dun even when i get married:( ::(

I know ot's for other infections and stuff also....but if i get the infection i'd know it with or without the smear test being done.

Does going to the gyno before marriage means the girl loses her virginity
