Slicing things thinly ..

So if you have to slice a vegie really thinly , rather , as thinly as possible … do you use a specific tool or just the usual knife ?:hmmm:

Re: Slicing things thinly ..

i use a big sharp cheifs knife for dicing and slicing ....other then the regular ones.

Re: Slicing things thinly ..

I just do it slowly and sharpen my knife

Re: Slicing things thinly ..

sharp knife for me however mum uses a mandolin

Re: Slicing things thinly ..

Depends on the vegtable, sometimes I will use a potato peeler to get thin slices of cucumber or carrot.

Re: Slicing things thinly ..

big sharp knife, never used a slicer seems too much work to me knife is easy.

Re: Slicing things thinly ..

knife..but man a mandolin is something that is always on our list of things to get but we never get it. maybe because its a nice to have not and not a must.

Re: Slicing things thinly ..

i only slice my cucumber really thin .. witha chef knife .. :@:

Re: Slicing things thinly ..

never thought any house does it without mandolin:bummer:

Re: Slicing things thinly ..

What is a mandolin?

I use a super sharp chef's knife for thin slices...

Re: Slicing things thinly ..

Here is a mandolin Reha

Re: Slicing things thinly ..

proper chefs knife, i got given the mandolin, but its too much hard work putting it together and then washing etc, just to stick to the knife.

Re: Slicing things thinly ..

i used my skills with just knife…i’m fearless using my finger as guide…never got hurt  i keep the sharp edge of knife at an angle [slightly slanting] facing away from the fingers. try  and, mind you, i do it very fast!!! in other words, alHamdolillah, i’m quite ‘sughaR’ :rotfl:

Re: Slicing things thinly ..

^ Multi-talented :)

Re: Slicing things thinly ..

sometimes mandolin and sometimes a knife. I would love to learn it to use a knife as the chefs do it on TV. I might take a cooking class at community college. :hmmm:

Re: Slicing things thinly ..

Re: Slicing things thinly ..

What is her theory behind not allowing you. Once you find out share it here to come up with counter arguments.
A few I think on the top of my head.

  1. You can learn to make non traditional dishes. So the choices will expand when it is time for dinner , lunch , break fast and parties.
  2. People love it if you serve non traditional exotic dishes at home parties.
  3. Your chances of getting a good rishta will increase immensely.
  4. You will learn to do thinks faster , efficiently and with less material.
  5. You will learn to make quick meals and also exotic dishes.
  6. Making cakes and pastries at home will save tons of money.
  7. If she nags you about too much time on computer then this will be her chance to get you away from computer.

Re: Slicing things thinly ..

Tell her I(mirch uncle) can make anything , but my presentation is not so good , that is why I want to go to cooking school.
Good presentation makes food look more appealing and appetizing.
And I gave you a long list of arguments already.

Nobody taught me, I learned it from over hearing my mother , bhabies , sister when they used to share their tips and trick around the dinner table. I had all those tips and tricks at the back of my mind and used them when I started to cook.
