Most of the ready made outfits in boutiques in Pakistan are sleeveless. So I buy sleeveless and I pick it up and go. Yet, aunties HATE it, and will hold it against you and not want to marry their son to you.
:o
Why is sleeveless such a big deal. As oppose to showing your arm?
Well pcg, a part pf society wears sleeveless here quite openly and comfortably. However it is still not that common.
I feel it also depends on whonia wearing it, how and where. For example if someone has thunder arms and is wearing it so it is bound to show off more or if someone is wearing it on the streets where the majority is going to be uneducated males then that woould also stir a negative reaction.
I'm simultaneously annoyed by how everything in boutiques is sleeveless and it's extra work/cost to have the sleeves stitched on because I don't wear sleeveless.
OTOH, I dont' think sleeveless is a big deal in the sense that, it doesn't make someone more religious or better or worse person or anything.
I have noticed its becoming more common in Pak, but it's definitely not the norm here, some girls wear short sleeves but never have I seen sleeveless, unless its a girls only party or occasion, but even hen it's rarely seen. Pakistan being a Muslim country, I think it totally unacceptable as showing your arms is haram. And the way men are over there, it draws unnecessary attention.
Why don't you consult the Quran/Sunnah about this?
What does your religion say about this ?
Being a Muslim, you should be VERY clear about this issue.
You can do whatever you wish, as long as you're prepared to face the consequences.....(whether its being answerable to God, or being rejected for showing off too much skin......if you're marrying a white dude I don't think he would care.....but Muslims....depends if they're by name only or the God fearing ones)....

But , but, but since you are not an auntie yet so your opinion does not count.

some people consider it as immodest, why can't you flaunt your sleeveless arms in front of aunties who don't care about sleeveless, plenty of those exist too.
I find it odd/disturbing that it's becoming "common" in Pakistani stores. My family in Pak (maternal and paternal) don't do sleeveless. I find it hard to believe that women would be hard-pressed to find clothes with sleeves in Pakistan given the country is is still for the most part conservative. If you're bothered by it then it's better to just buy a couple outfits with sleeves than to buy several that are without them. The libaas should make the wearer feel good and comfortable ....and your libaas should maintain your own izzat for yourself as well as the respect of others. If wearing sleeveless makes you feel self-conscious and uncomfortable and you feel you cannot respect yourself and fear that others (auntis) will not respect you either......then it's a waste to even purchase them. Ab is main auntiyon ka to kasoor nahi, they are not the ones who bought the clothes.
I don't think it's that big of a deal, but I only recently picked up some outfits. Before that it was always shalwaar kameez with sleeves. But when I'm in a hurry and I'm Pak for a total of 4 days, I pick up what looks good and is affordable and worry about adding on sleeves later. Never have the time to let the boutique add on sleeves, because often they want to send it out and want another week and I don't have that time. I always figured if it's a big deal I can get a tailor in the US to alter it and add on sheer sleeves or add on sleeves if the boutique gave me the extra kappra for the sleeves.
I mean I don't care personally, but I guess I have my profile pic as being one that I'm wearing a sleeveless. No wonder the aunties are not responding much to me thru rishta aunties!!

lol yeah change that pic to a pic where your outfit is with sleeves. It may help!
