the shias use an islamic template for their beliefs. bukhari and muslim did a fine job, i dont know if their collections contain mahdi hadiths or not but they are not the complete hadith collections. there is others. the authentication process is not so fragile that fabricated hadiths can get through. collection of weak, fabricated hadiths is one thing but authentication is another.

A controversial hadith authenticated by one scholar and rejected by the other, so what do you do?

If the belief in Mahdi was so important then Imam Bukhari and Imam Muslim should have been aware of it too, and if they were aware of it or held the same aqeeda they should have included few of them in their collections, which they didn’t. Many sunnis give excuses but they still fail to present a single hadith on Mahdi in Bukhari or Muslim.

And if shias use an Islamic template then what template did Zoroastrians followed in mutah, rajah, mourning rituals etc?
