Sightseeing in NY

Spring is back and will be gone too quickly. I was just thinking to compile a list of all good places to visit in NY, from upstate to LongIsland, all the sightseeing places, the scenic drives and other beautiful places to roam around in leisure time (though I rarely get that much :frowning: )

I need your input please. I do know I can get the informative sites by googling but that are not based on personal experiences… so share yours here

Thanks!

Re: Sightseeing in NY

I've lived in nyc for many years and still love going around Times Square it's such a tourist attraction. I think I'm just attracted cuz all the big screens and lights there. So here goes my list of tourist/sightseeing attractions in NYC (don't know about upstate and haven't really seen any in LI)

  1. Times Square- also has Madame Tussuad's
  2. Herald Square- a lot of shopping, always busting with tourists
  3. Union Square
  4. South Street Seaport- seaport, a lot of restaurants, some shopping near the water very nice specially during the summer and there's usually some show going on in front there where people can just stop and watch specially a lot of contortionist shows for free. They also have the Bodies Exhibition there which I've been wanting to go to
  5. Empire State Building
  6. Statue of Liberty
  7. Metropolitan Museum of Art (MoMA)
  8. Central Park
  9. Fifth Avenue- just a stroll on the avenue where most of the designers are located since 5th avenue is so popularized around the world
  10. Broadway Show
  11. Rockefeller Center

That's really all I can think of right now.

If you are into history/politics/business:

  1. United Nations buildings
  2. The Federal Reserve Bank of NY- they also have tours in the building, just remember you cant take pics inside the building and even outside of it
  3. Wall Street- Stock Exchange and World Trade Center site

Re: Sightseeing in NY

All the attractions I mentioned are in manhattan.

Re: Sightseeing in NY

sumorani's got a pretty comprehensive list for manhattan attractions.

in long island there's wading river, it's great for a picnic by the bay. u have fruit picking and veggies farms in the area. wading river also has camping grounds.

there's tanger outlet at the end of long island. also a water park.. i think it's called splish splash??

palisade interstate parkway (PIP) and Harriman State Park make for scenic drives, perfect for a day trip. bear mountain is also very nice.

in upstate new york, there's the renaissance faire event every weekend... ppl go there dressed up in costumes and stuff, it makes for a great outing. it's at sterling forest/tuxedo.

back to manhattan: in the summer it's nice to stroll in little italy, some of the restos put tables outside, and i've had some lovely meals there on summer afternoons/evenings. if u're into food, do a food trip, dare to try some new cuisines and post ur discoveries here!

in brooklyn, at sheepshead bay, there used to be a boat that did a 3 hr cruise every friday evening... after sunset u could watch fireworks from the nearby stadium from the deck of the boat sitting in ur armchairs. it was great. i'm not sure if it runs anymore... it was called the dorothy b viii.

wading river, tanger outlets, splish splash=all 5 mins away from me! worth a try although tanger's really not that amazing

how about brooklyn botanical garden?

Re: Sightseeing in NY

true, tanger is really blah, but after going all the way to wading river, i'd feel obliged to stop there if only for an hour.

i haven't been to bklyn botanical.. seen pics of it though... looks nice enough, but i'm not a fan of botanical gardens.. not unless they showcase japanese gardens with those pretty looking pruned bonsai trees.

oh, how could i forget the US Open at shea stadium? one of the best things about summer in NYC!

New York Aquarium at Coney Island... i've only been there once, some 7 yrs ago, but it was quite nice. i also really like the American Museum of Natural History... they've got a planetarium there, and a butterfly conservatory and stuff. oh, and Bronx Zoo, which is the 2nd largest zoo in the USA is great, i like it much better than the zoo in San Diego which is sposed to be the biggest in the USA. In contrast, Queens Zoo is really small, but nice for an afternoon when you have a few hours to kill and don't wanna make a big production out of ur day.

Street fairs in Manhattan and Brooklyn are also a lot of fun, especially the ethnic theme ones.

Re: Sightseeing in NY

where is this long island

:rotfl:

New York City is made up of 3 Islands and the rest of the city is on the continental United states.

Manhattan is an island in itself and thats where all the buildings are.

Brooklyn and Queens are on Long Island.

Staten Island is an Island south of Manhattan.

Bronx is on mainland USA

Re: Sightseeing in NY

lol thnx let me live thr for month and i,ll know everything

Technicaly, yes, there is the island of Manhattan, Queen/Brooklyn/Long Island, and staten Island. Bronx/upstate
But New York City is actually comprised of the 5 boroughs, Bronx and Brooklyn which are North/south respectively of Manhattan, Queens to the east of manhattan and staten island, to the south.
Long island is a part of New York state but not new york city.

Re: Sightseeing in NY

^u from tri-state area too? I thought your were Dubai girl for some reason :hehe:

Bear mountain is fun ONLY if you go there with the ENTIRE KHANDAN.

I would not like to go there by myself either - cause it's a picnic place and FAMILY is a must.

Otherwise it feels lonely and depressing - and seriously there are no bears - to run away from either - for timepass :(
