Re: Sick of Rishta Issues? B**** it out here!
Jaanwar....every language in the world has it's unique slang. In English....when we see something we don't like or that turns us off we might say, "eeew" or "yuck" or "frickin gross" **or "that is sooo cheesy/fruity/gay"** or "What a loser!" **And western people can use these terms towards people of their **own culture and race.
Also, paindu can mean different things. Sometimes it can mean "jaahil" or "village ignorance". When I hear about honor killings, or insanely evil mothers-in-law, or double standard views........the word "paindu" *comes to my mind because these things reflect "jaahil" attitude to me. And also, sometimes paindoo means "eeew" "yuck"...etc. For example, you might see someone wearing unflattering fashion and think *"Haai what a paindu". Similarly, someone of Western culture might criticize the fashion sense of a fellow member of their** own **cultural background
I'm not saying that it's right to do that. What I'm trying to say is that we all might not like certain aspects of our culture....but that **doesn't mean **that **all **of us are ashamed of our culture on the whole....and want to be "western". You can have pride in your heritage/culture and still be critical. I think it's healthy to look at culture openly and objectively.....that way we can think critically about problem areas and strive for improvement.
Although, at the same time, I do understand that some desis might think **every **aspect of culture (cuisine, clothes, language, entertainment, looks) is paindu....and in that case, it's an indication of denial and insecurity.
I have a sense of pride in our unique slang...including the broad term "paindu". It's a part of our desi language and I don't plan to give it up any time soon. :) If I see an applicable situation that warrants the use of this word....I'll use it.
You always make a lot of sense RV. However, my problem is with equating 'paindoo' with 'jaahil'. I am a paindoo and I like to believe that I am not jaahil, at least not completely.
I can not, have not and will not approve of the derogatory use of the word paindoo.
