The “original/traditional” way to wear a saree was without a blouse, often casually exposing your bosom and upper body. Blouses only came into fashion after British memsahibs arrived in India, and wealthy local women started copying their fashion trends. “Original” blouses look much like the Victorian era blouses worn by British women at the time, with high collars, puffy sleeves, lace trimming, and no exposed midriff to speak of.
since im hijabi, i wear my sari blouse long with long sleeves....at the most 3/4 sleeves with churiyaan. So none of my skin shows.
my mom bought my MIL a sari from here and it came with two blouses. My MIL is also hijabi. well, these 2 blouses were "scandalous" for her..lol...(low cut, revealing back, sleevless), but the sari itself was gorgeous. So my MIL ended up making another blouse.
I told her whenever she gets tired of this sari to give it to me (with the "scandalous" blouses too ;) )
