Showing skin while wearing a sari

I have seen women with big blouses that cover their entire stomach and back. I have also seen women that have short blouses that cover just above the naval area and then others that are even shorter. Also depending on the way a woman wears a sari, she can cover up her entire mid section even if the blouse is short or they can wear it low.

Is it bad to wear a short blouse with a sari?

P.S. This is not a religious thread please don’t state the obvious that “Islam forbids it.”

ugh also i just realized i posted this in the wedding section. can someone please move it into fashion and beauty. sorry. :smack:

Re: Showing skin while wearing a sari

If you want to go strictly by fashion....it depends on your body type. You could wear a short blouse and look hot, if i did that..i think i'd make men go gay. Idk.

Re: Showing skin while wearing a sari

I haven't worn the 'long' blouses ever, I find them a bit weird. My blouses are always short but even then I cover my stomach and back always so no skin shows except a couple of times when I have worn sleeveless blouses or chiffon sarees.. then the material is see-through. I bought this one saree that had a deep back with beads across and the pallu was scrunched up on the shoulder with beads as well.. I think that's the most skin showing I have done in a saree... lol.

If you want to go for a short blouse, go ahead, I think it's all about how you wear it. Even someone with a long blouse can make a saree look bad and vulgar.

Re: Showing skin while wearing a sari

^ do you guys know how to pleat/tie yours? or do you get em stitched?

Don’t be so judgemental about yourself :smilestar:

Anyway, to answer the question, you can still wrap a sari very gracefully without showing your tummy area. If you have long her and you let them down, they will cover your back. But really, I’ve seen many people carry a sari very well without having to wear a long blouse.

Re: Showing skin while wearing a sari

My blouses are short and the saris have stitched pleats otherwise my mother would have to spend hours teaching me how to wear it properly.

but im wondering when u go to pakistani events/weddings and have short blouses on and ur back/stomach/midsection show a bit, do people tend to stare or say something or is it considered normal?

Re: Showing skin while wearing a sari

yes, you will get stared at, specially by aunties.

I like wearing short blouses with saris:) and just like u I got the pleats stitched. hmmm I dont think ppl really stare when u wear a sari unless the blouse looks like a bra....

Re: Showing skin while wearing a sari

^ or ur bra looks like a blouse

Re: Showing skin while wearing a sari

Saree is one of my favourute dress. Specially, chiffon sarees. I like to wear my saree with a short blouse preferably with cap sleeves. My sarees do not have stitched pleats. I guess even with a short blouse you can still cover yourself properly and look decent.

I have never worn saris yet as girls aren’t supposed to wear 'em before marriage. However, I’ve grown up watching my nani and dadi wearing very pretty cotton saris on daily basis. Their blouses were just the right size - not too short that they would give competition to Bipasha Basu and not too loose and big that it can be also worn as a kurti with a pair of jeans. I’ve always heard women in my family saying that blouses are just not the same if they are not properly stitched and don’t have a nice fitting. Although I don’t wear sarees, I do know that a blouse should be sewn as your second skin or it will look quite tacky. Length really does not matter because it’s a personal preference.

Also, the biggest element in wearing ANY outfit is the way one carries them. If the sole purpose of a woman is to flaunt her physcial assets and get other’s attention, she would manage to do so even under a burqa - she doesn’t need a low back or sleeveless blouse for it.

Just my two cents!

Vidya Balan wore this red sari when she was received an award for Parineeta in one of those award shows. Man, did I fall in love with that sari! It had a very low back and full-sleeves blouse and the sari had a very long pallu and she carried it with oodles of grace and elegence. I can’t find pictures of it though.

Re: Showing skin while wearing a sari

My mother in law sends stuff over for me all the time from France (i heart her!) but about a year ago she thought she would buy me something"ethnic" for a change, so somehow she got hold of this manish malhotra sari and white embellished dress and sent it to me.... this dress was fine.... but the sari had one of those bra style tops!!!!

Ok, yes i do wear sleevless here and there, but that was too much... though it looked great on me... i've only ever worn it once and that was to a ladies only party a while back.... my usual sari tops do have a low back and are quite short but not that revealing... a bra style top is too much.....

^agree

Re: Showing skin while wearing a sari

maroush did it nto come with a separte blouse?
here, most of the realy fancy sarees come with 2 blouses, a saas-bahu type. one tha is more trendy, like the bra one, while the other is more conservative
