My blouses are always short(my susral is from India, so I get the REAL deal) anyways they always have sleeves, back is a bit low, lakin I always keep my hair down so no skin shows there., plus my sas taught my how to wear sari and trust me unless I raise my arms above my head even the sides don't show and skin (because in pakistan showing skin in my family is a big NO NO)
I love making my own folds, it drapes much better that way, the stiched ones kind of look fake(sorry to my guppies who have the stitched ones :), even my mom always wore stitched ones)
It is all about how you carry it, I love long pallu, it can help you cover too if somethig is showing (cover elgently without covering like a masi LOL)
My sas tip is to have a good stiched blouse, it should never be loose otherwise you end up being unconfortable and show more skin then needed + tie the sari thori ache se tight se, so that there is no un-pleasent fabric/bulges.
But honestly when I go to India everytime I wear sari I ask my sas to drape my sari *LOLLLL
^ for beginners a stitched saree is the way to go, and seriously unless u were raised knowing how to, or spend ALOT of time on learning it, stitched is just so much easier. Though i will admit, the few times i’ve worn it w/s omeone else pleating it, it lookd wonderful. :sigh:
yeh if done properly the manual pleating is very graceful. but i definitley dont know how to do it, only wore a sari twice in my life. and had a difficult time even with the stitched one.
Doesn't it also depend on the fabric of the sari? Like if it's chiffon, then the skin will show through the fabric but if it's banarsi or silk, then it can totally be covered.
I think cap sleeves look so good in a sari blouse.
^^ Sara , same happened to my blouses ! I got a few stitched and apparently the tailor turned them into kurta’s and they are actually good enough to wear on top of the lenghas I have !!
I had to get new ones stitched by an indian lady … bless her.. she was really good
wishkumar, I just had to agree with so many things you said. My nani and dadi wore the same kind of blouses that perhaps yours did. They always of the right size and the right fit. The way they carried the outfit everyday was amazing with children pulling them in every direction. My MIL did the same.
That said, I really don’t like wearing revealing clothes at all and that inclues sleeveless, midrif baring, transparent, backless outfits. I do own some bra like blouses but those are strictly for hubby’s eyes only so I have never worn them in public.
Is this the Vidya Balan saree you are talking about? I love the way she is wearing this one.
Dont wear a sari if you dont want to show skin. The look is ruined if you cover your entire body. Looks like you draped yourself with a sheet and called it a sari :D
Doesnt look nice at all.
There are many other options out there for those that dont want to show their body.....skip the sari and move onto something else.
I wore short blouses once or twice in my lifetime so far and did not feel comfortable when i wore a butterfly pallu sari (the one that has the pallu scrunched up at the shoulder with sequins). Both saris were chiffon but the other one was a regular sari and the way i wore it, you could barely see skin. I rather feel more comfortable wearing longer blouses (not kurtas, lol). Personally i think pakistani tailors dont know how to sew sari blouses very well. They make them like mini shirts and the blouse has no proper fitting.
FYI, i do my own pleats. Looks much better IMO but its only after wearing saris quite often and even practising at home with simple, non kaam wali saris.

nopes , I have seen two most graceful ladies in my family that wear sari with full blouses , and mashallah look the most beautiful... Its largely the way one carries a sari really ...
and having said that , most pakistani women make the mess of the sari , they dont know how to carry it well .. and those who show skin , look totally indian influenced and somewhat vulgar ..
You don't have to show skin to look graceful in a saree. Absolutely not.
Unfortunately, sarees are not big in my family since we are Punjabi. But I do own 2 sarees...never worn them...but will definitely wear them without showing the midrif area. A saree has to be draped well in order for it to look graceful. As long as your curves are accentuated...you are good! It's like wearing any other piece of clothing..i.e. shalwar kameez.
Mahi...thanks for posting Vidya's pictures...that blouse is so stunning! Totally thiking about getting that made.
Also, I don't know if anyone remembers but Ash wore a stunning green and orange saree the day after her wedding in Devdas. The blouse was long-sleeved and it looked so beautiful.
Regular Pakistani tailors rarely will stitch a great blouse but there are definitely some goods ones. There's one in Karachi that my family has been going to for years and he only stitches blouses, peticoats and the pleats on saris. He doesn't stitch anything else like shalwar kameez and the blouses come out perfect.

:@:
just my opinion on it. doesnt look good 2 me. besides arent sari's indian influenced to begin with?
There is nothing wrong with wearing long blouses if the saree is see through. I wore a net saree to my cousin's wedding last year, and my blouse was long with full sleeves; sleeves were made of net though. I don't think one necessarily needs to show any skin to look good in sarees. All you need is a perfect fitting blouse and the confidence to carry it.

Nope the original Indian or Hindu saree style is very pathetic. The indian theirselves do not like it anymore. The present saree style is from Pakistan mainly from Karachi. Pakistan gave the decent touch to saree.
The half n almost no blouse is Hindu style not a Muslim style at all. As i said its all about how you carry ur dress. If saree really suits you, you do nt have to show the skin.
