Showing Baree

The way they have dressed up the photos is kinda creepy.

what actually happened : NO baree was sent over my house from his (my mom was a little disappointed by that) but the gold was...and my mom made sure to show it to everybody. I was kind a upset abt it, but thn i let her enjoy it.

His side: The stuff was delivered by my brothers and cousins...two of the girls also went with them. At my inlaws house they set up everything in the living room and left (brought back the suit cases with them ... :)

Re: Showing Baree

i remember in weddings way back when, the baree/varee (what the guy's family gives) is shown to everyone..it was usually on the mehndi night that the guy's side hauls out a suitcase and shows everyone each suit, matching shoes, jewellery, makeup, a towel with a nala, and other things pinned on. I remember us young kids ooohhing and ahhhing over everything. lol. And then each married women would get a suit as well (nice!) lol.

These days, the stopped showing the barree, but still give the suits.

In my gaon in Pakistan, usually the mamoos of the bride buys the girl's furniture and stuff. So in her new home/room at her inlaws, all the furniture is there and set up and displayed. Everythign from her bed, chaddar set, fridge, microwave, sofa set, etc.

I got married into a bengali family, and when I went to my new home for the first time, they displayed some of the clothes that they gave me. One of the suits was draped and set up so it looked like a bride. At first I was startled and thought it was a doll..lol..but it was cute. I have a pic before I dismantled it - will post it up soon.

Re: Showing Baree

So hold on...a bari is what the groom's side gifts, and the jahaiz is what the bride's side gifts?

What exactly goes into each and who is gifted?

Re: Showing Baree

a baree is what the groom side gives to the bride.

a jaheiz is what the girls side gives to the bride.

everything else is just gifts - for the groom, groom's family, brides family, other members, etc.

Re: Showing Baree

^ Thanks. I hear there’s a tradition that the girl’s side gift all the groom’s family too; but it doesn’t happen the other way round. Only the bride is gifted by them. That’s not fair!!! :nahi:

Re: Showing Baree

i think depends on the family.

In our family, both sides give each others family member's gifts.
