Shouldn't we change our national sport?

What are the pros and cons of it? I mean clearly Cricket is the most popular sport and we suck at other games (not really; we used to be quite good in squash and hockey). I dont know whats the scene with other countries and if their national sports are most popular ones or not. It might not necessarily affect the decline of other sports and could actually spur other sports to make a mark.

Re: Shouldn't we change our national sport?

Ok, so we lost two games....

:-D

Re: Shouldn't we change our national sport?

Assalam O Aalaikom,

How are you? Squash is not fun to watch due to not being a huge and a popular sport. Hockey should not entertaining but only few countries play it and thus it is not a popular sport. Hockey term is often considered as Ice Hockey in North America.

Re: Shouldn't we change our national sport?

Field hockey is way better than Ice hockey but there is so many reasons why it's not considered as an entertaining sport, it is actually one of the best games around but Pakistan and India ruled hockey for so long that western countries lost interest in this sport otherwise field hockey is played in lots of countries.

The only reason why Ice hockey is more popular is because it's played in Canada and USA otherwise field hockey is much more exciting to watch.

Squash is boring to watch and great to play.

We shouldn't change our national sport though, it's pretty much the same case with India. Cricket is more popular in India than Pakistan and their hockey team is worse than us but it's still their national sport.

Re: Shouldn't we change our national sport?

Pakistan has won 4 world cups in field hockey, as opposed to...

Re: Shouldn't we change our national sport?

What about tradional sports such as Kabaddi or Guli danda?

Re: Shouldn't we change our national sport?

Hockey is a dying game and to demote it from being our national sport will be the last nail in its coffin. Hopefully PCB has plans to revive hockey by spending some of its fortunes on it.

Meanwhile they can also try showing some interest in football. I still believe makranis in pakistan are a hidden football talent. If we start training their kids from scratch today i'm sure we'll see some great results in the next 10-15 years. Problem with us though is that we're extremely short sighted and want instant highs... for example how the PCB wanted Waqas Younis to instantly train our boyzzz for the test series series in india without a permanant contract.

Re: Shouldn't we change our national sport?

i think Cricket should be it, since its the most played, and the most popular of all

Re: Shouldn't we change our national sport?

...man so insightful...im moved by ure statement....kiddin dude...

frankly i dont even care wat the national sport is....our ancestors decided the national game(s) respectively for india and pak and at tht time it was hockey tht was the most popular sport....if we chg the national sport now...we might have to chg it again at lr time coz then there mite be nother game thts more popular.....so just chill let things be the way and let cricket be the "unofficial" national sport....

It ironic that (guess) 80% of Pak population are unaware of “Makrani” race and culture exsists ts in Pakistan. I have lots of respect for them as they are humble and ever-so-happy easy-go-around people. Sports or athletics is in their blood, they can flourish in any sports with little bit of luck and regular attention.
They can beat any one in any sports any where, hands down!
Qasim Umar - ex Test wicketkeeper cum opener was a good cricketer in his hay days. I enjoyed his cricket
:jhanda:

Re: Shouldn’t we change our national sport?

Rainy I dont think he was Makrani  He was kenyan born. An excellent player of fast bowling but unforunately his career ended pre maturely.

Re: Shouldn't we change our national sport?

fkhan, i am pretty sure Qasim Umar was Makrani (might as well have Kenyan connection but he was definitely Makrani).

Re: Shouldn’t we change our national sport?

^ I think he was Makrani Sheeda,fkhan2, because I remember a Tv talk show during those days and there were some hints, however I can’t say for sure.
Currently he’s in Australia as resident.

But we all know , why he left his cricket, Right ? Right ! :halo:

Re: Shouldn't we change our national sport?

Some people make an argument that cricket is already so popular in Pakistan that making it national sport will not do anything additional for the sport. Hence title of 'national sport' should be bestowed on a sport that we need to encourage and promote in our country.

I don't agree with that thinking as in my mind that is like putting horse in front of the cart. Title of "national sport" should be given to a sport that is most popular in our country rather than using this title as a vehicle to promote a sport.

However, I also feel that all of us city folks monopolize representation in such opinions. 70% of Pakistani population resides in country side and not cities, while the city-folks take it as our God given right to make all decisions based on what WE like. So, lets think about what sport is most popular in our country-side and villages, which is actually tha majority of our country?

Is it cricket?

Is it hockey?

Is it football?

I'd say we should make kabaddi our national sport.

Re: Shouldn't we change our national sport?

.

Re: Shouldn't we change our national sport?

I agree. Interestingly enough, none of the four South Asian cricket playing nations have it as their national sport. It's hockey for both Pakistan and India, volleyball (!! if I googled correctly) for Srilanaka and kabaddi for Bangladesh.

Re: Shouldn't we change our national sport?

The national sport in Canada is lacrosse. Harldy the most popular sport, but alas the 'national' sport.

I think the national sport has to do more with being iconic than the most popular.

I don't think cricket has a distinct 'pakistani' identity like (field) hockey, althuogh it is still the most popular. (Field) Hockey is a recognized and respected sport in Pakistan, and I think that's all that matters when coining a sport 'National'.

I would love to see a truly sub-continental sport being our national sport, but is Kabaddi really a sport? I mean, isn't it just a variation of present-day wrestling? Pardon my ignorance on the subject.

Re: Shouldn't we change our national sport?

Don't you think wrestling is not a sport either? By wrestling I don't mean American style wretsling (WWF etc) but proper wrestling which is also a olympic sport.

Of course Kabaddi is a sport - requires athelism, stamina, agility etc.

By the way - have you written anything what Inzi may have said or his excuses for the test defeat?

Re: Shouldn't we change our national sport?

hahaha, no dude... but if you wish, I'll write something up in the near future. =)

at the moment i've been extremley busy at work... i barely get to check this forum.

but soon inshAllah.:D

Re: Shouldn't we change our national sport?

When you start writing - a special thread devouted to the dopey Inzi can be created. I lookforward to it when you write. Maybe when the series is over - you will have plenty to write about.
