Should your foundation be lighter than your skin?

Here in Canada, we say it should match your skin. But I’ve heard stuff and read in some desi articles that the purpose of foundation is to make your skin look lighter. What do you think?

I wanted to ask the same question about bridal make up too. Should their make up be done so they look lighter (I don’t mean looking like a white ghost though, just a lighter look) or should it be done according to their skin colour?

Re: Should your foundation be lighter than your skin?

no-no-no!

Who wants to be ghostly white, or worse, grey!!!

thanks for replying sahar :). I hate the ghostly white look myself. but tht's not what I mean when I say lighter foundation. I mean should it give your face a lighter look or the exact same as ur skin tone.

Re: Should your foundation be lighter than your skin?

In my case i actually do need to put a shade or two lighter then my skin tone ( it doesn't look bad nor ghostly but i can see it doesn't look natural either) which is oily so after some time it looks the same as my own tone - if i put exactly the same shade my face looks darker :S - One shade lighter looks good actually in pictures i have noticed...and it doesn't look bad up front either...totally same shade looks natural and good but when you apply a foundation and it looks completely light or seperate from your face its looks bad ghostly, Grey and it looks as if someone has forgotten to take of their mask...

Exactly the same is so good - but one shade lighter doesn't look bad either (a lot of times).

I agree. My skin is very oily as well. And I noticed even when I use one shade lighter it works just fine because the oil helps ur foundation blend in after sometimes. But you really shouldnt go 3 to 4 shades lighter that would really show and would make u look like a white ghost.

what about brides though? Shouldnt their foundation be different than everyday foundation? if Yes, what sort of difference?

Re: Should your foundation be lighter than your skin?

Yeah...more then two is a disaster and even if your face greases up a lot it wouldn't help the foundation to blend.

Re: Should your foundation be lighter than your skin?

i think your foundation should be a LITTLE lighter because first of all, your face is not the same color everywhere. it's lighter in some areas and it's darker in another. for example, my cheeks are lighter than my forehead and chin. when it put my foundation on my cheek its the exact same color, but on my forehead and chin, you can tell i put something on my face and it looks a little lighter all of a sudden. you should get a foundation that matches the lightest color on your face then use a bronzer to darken up the areas that are a bit darker on your face.

for some odd reason doesn't even matter how light my foundation is after a while it looks the same as my skin below neck and mathces. Don't know if that happends to everyone but I find it weird.
And I just found that out when I was out of my foundation used my mom's (she's a lot lighter than me) at first it looked really light but after a lil while I couldn't even tell if I was wearing my own foundation or my mom's weird?

^it happens

Re: Should your foundation be lighter than your skin?

Re: Should your foundation be lighter than your skin?

Heck no! Your foundation should blend into your skin.

Even if u think a lighter foundation suits u better, u're wrong! Foundation shud blend in completely! That's why foundation is the MOST tricky product! Trust me people can tell when u've put on a slightly lighter foundation..

Re: Should your foundation be lighter than your skin?

but this is also fact dat wen we apply the same color foundation or darker than the skin tone then no doubt our face luks equally tonned but not healthy n glowing toned,,i mean to say complexion tone must b a bit healthy n glowing,n same color base sometimes does nt look so attractive,,i dont mean to say dat every one should luk whity ghost but if u handle it carefully (well blended) then u can use light color foundation or some add of pale color(for mostly aisians).

Re: Should your foundation be lighter than your skin?

I feel you should try different shades and figure out what looks good on you, as everybody is different, but my foundation matches my skin and my concealer is one shade lighter for the dark parts on my face eg under my eyes or blemishes.

You still had to ask?

Foundation has to match your skin tone. If its too light you'll look like a ghost,if its too dark you'll look splotchy.

Re: Should your foundation be lighter than your skin?
