Before visiting someone ? If yes in what situation it is mandatory to call and in what situations it is OK to just barge in ?

Always call, they may have other plans that you are disturbing .
Definitely call before turning up on someone's doorstep! I don't think there is any situation where you should just arrive unexpectedly!

It is always good to call or make an appointment . I think only in case of emergency you can just show up , but still its good to be self reliant .

Unless its parents home, we always feel obliged to call and ask even if its my or her sister's place and we expect the same from others. In fact we also call parents before going to their place but purpose of that call is normally to make sure that they are home and not ASK if we can visit them :)
now how much in advance you call, depends on your "relations". For my sister and sali's place, we even call them if we are in the area and ask if we can stop by to meet them in 15/20 min ...for other not-so-close friends/relatives this might be a day earlier or first thing in the morning if we are planning to visit them later in the day.

Always call...my dad gets SO annoyed with people when they dont call and just show up. He never gets mad at them but its just that he is caught off guard.
I call even if Im going to my sister's places...give them some notice.

Coz ppl could say ‘jab dekho muun utha ke aa jatein hain’ or ‘itne besharam and tralalala’ or even ‘Maa baap ne inhe kuch sikahaya hi nhi blabla’
They can b busy, or going somwhere…
So apni, apne mom dad aur doosron ki izzat issi mein hai ke kissi k paas jaane se pehle phone kro:hehe:

I always call even my mom and dad to check if they are at home or have plans etc, it's just common sense.

Yes in a ideal world everyone should call!! but usually that is not the case, we don't call when we go over our grandparents house (but then again they are my parent's parents so it should be OK) or if we go over to our khalas house who is two doors down, but usually we do call if we go anywhere else
However whenever people come to our house it seems as if no one calls, and honestly that just creates such a big havoc and headache that could be saved with a measly 30 second phone call!
