Re: Should women be doctors?
Um, Miss Paris, I'd prefer to take it from my own experiences since I've worked with doctors quite a bit, and you even have people who have a medical background like ~Sehar~ describing what a doctor's schedule can be like. Once you know your facts, then talk. Very few female doctors who have kids take on a 9-5 type job when they are a doctor. Rotations in the hospital usually occur early in the morning for many doctors, and they go on to see more patients with private practice. Lots of doctors work in schedules where they are not always on call. You can CHOOSE to be on call, depending on what area of medicine you go into. If you choose to have kids, then its only wise to take a schedule that can fit your kids in. But that doesn't mean that doctors don't have choices.
In fact, that's one of the BIG reasons that desis push for their daughters to become doctors. Its one of those high respect - high money - and flexible schedule type professions that allow a woman to live her life and tend to her kids at the same time.
Really people.
Re: Should women be doctors?
to rag on guys who want wives that will stay home to take care of kids is retarded. if that's what they want, and they find a suitable, willing partner, then that's their choice.
Re: Should women be doctors?
Just like its a woman's choice to marry and have kids and still practice medicine. I think people here are ragging more on career women. Typical.
Re: Should women be doctors?
Hmm, didnt realize people would be so divided on the issue. Gosh!
Also noticed guys arent really responding about whether they'd be interested in marrying a doctor. I find that plenty of girls dont mind the idea so am really interested in hearing if guys find it a plausable option.
Re: Should women be doctors?
yeah cause they (career women, not specifically doctors) spend their time nagging about how much they are tired…how much they feel their kids are big hassles and how much more they like their career compare to their kids…etc…
and i’m sick of these career women complaining about their jobs:grumpy:…and their kids:grumpy:…and their divorces:D
another point: here in france we have a limited quota of people allowed to study medicine each year in order to prevent too many doctors from being graduated..so that number of young doctors is enough for the population…BUT the problem is that women doctors are more and more numerous amoung young doctors…and they fail to work as much as their male counterparts…and that leads to a LACK a doctors…cause these women took the seat of males who would have worked harder on field (but you know young guys are less into books than females…so they failed the pass exams…)…the result is that in some countryside area..their is a dangerous lack of doctors…cause females all want to work in cities…short hours!
another consequence is that more people have to take time out from their job to see doctors, cause it’s getting harder and hader to find doctors open on week ends…as females prefer not to work on week ends to see their children…another consequence is that emergencies are packed with minor problems on week ends…especially in pediatry, because people could not find doctors open…and that cost a lot! and also divert emergencies from dealing with really important problems!
BUT their are pro of females doctors, i think female doctors are more understanding of the patient…they take more time to think about real good diagnose…and they are less narrow minded than male doctors…which can save lives! and also i feel more confortable to see a female doctor, than a male doctor…this is a personal choice! i am personally very enthusiastic about female doctors:halo:
so in conclusion, i would say it’s fine that there are female doctors too cause we need both kinds of doctors…BUT society should adapt to females being doctors: ie more seats for medicine study, because females work shorter hours, and some take years off when their kids are small..and also bosses should be more understanding…people need to take time out to see doctors..cause they (female doctors) work in office hours only…and female doctors should organize themselves..so that sometimes, on rotation, they open also during week ends…
medicine is a sensible topic cause it affets survival of people..so these issues must be thought about thouroughly…
Re: Should women be doctors?
I dont know why you lot are complaining? Perhaps some of you should upgrade your social circles
I agree I prefer not to hang out with desis most of the time. But the 'desi' friends I do have would prefer to marry an educated girl. :o
and there will always be men AND women who would like to marry a BSG and there is nothing any one can do about it.
So you have two options left.
1 ) You could continue blabbing around and the world will continue goinng on except you.
2 ) Do your own thing and try the best you can for yourself.
There will always be people who have different views on things and even out of perspective.
p.s. BSG = bakri style girl/guy

Re: Should women be doctors?
Paris, many of the problems you've described exist here too. But to claim that its because women are working is ridiculous. I don't see male doctor's being open on the weekends more than female doctors? And most jobs give sick leave and personal leave so that you can fit in doctor appointments. These are all bahanay, man. I don't see any reason to discourage a female from being a doctor. As long as she practices or uses the degree in some capacity, I don't see how a medical education can go to waste on females.
And emergency rooms are NOT blocked up because there are too many female doctors. Its because there is a shortage of doctors in general. And that too is because population is growing, and seats for doctors aren't. Also its because of ill management by hospitals (insurance problems tie into this). Also its because many medical students are choosing to use their degree for things other than practicing medicine, like health insurance, research, government work, international work, etc etc. In the United States, there has been recent movement to expand the number of seats nationally to help solve this problem.
Again, you really need to be a bit more familiar with the field to know the various factors. Blaming things on women is a bit myopic.
Re: Should women be doctors?
I know, residency is the hardest but its only 3 years unless you want to specialize. Radiology isnt that busy either, for post residency options. If you’re really that worried about spending time with kids, you could always have them when you’re established?
Who cares what guys want? I wouldn’t pay much attention to what they want; they usually want everything and expect too much

I agree with what you said...but the national french organisation of medicine said that feminization of the profession was part of the reason for those problems....BUT my attitude is different tha yours..as a feminazi you hide and deny the problem, as a feminist I acknoledge that the problem result of the inability of the society to anticipate and adapt to that natural evolution.....AND I do favor that feminization....nonetheless it raises issues...these must be tackled and overcome!
Re: Should women be doctors?
where did feminism come in from? OMG HAHAHAH so now women wanting to be doctors is an act of feminism? Goody goody gum drops
Re: Should women be doctors?
^ I know, that's what I'm wondering.
